Thanks to the bad weather, I've been staying indoors for the pass week. Got bored and decided to build a cheapo light box and play around with it.

IMHO, it's a great setup! Very well exposed photos and no harsh reflections. Much better than using a off shoe flash setup.
*

Thank you smile.gif I don't have any flash units yet so have to use this poor man's setup.

not bad not bad.. now u'll need to try to DIY a box which u can have light source from under. So everything will be litted up. biggrin.gif really will be full high key liao.. biggrin.gif
*

Thanks for the suggestion! biggrin.gif Actually most people use two light sources shining in from both sides. I only had one so I just put it on top of the box, that's why the shadow at the bottom of the subject quite harsh.

Good job! Make one for me tongue.gif

I actually like the shadow, give it a sense of depth.
*

Thank you biggrin.gif Haha. Very easy to make only the box. Like me I simply cut and all my lines crooked also take about 20 minutes only. I think if use 2 light sources the shadow should be nicer. But I very kedekut don't feel like spending on a lamp tongue.gif

i dun quite understand yr setup picture...so theres only one light source from the top diffused through the paper? how did you light up the face then?
*

Yes, it is the only light source that I have. I turn my ceiling lights off and close the room door as well when I'm shooting. The only light source in the entire room is that fluorescent tube on the box. It was enough to light up the front of the watch smile.gif

QUOTE(5w33 @ Jun 21 2008, 07:18 PM)
Maybe the white paper can reflect??
*

Actually some people stick white paper in the interior of the whole box. The idea is to have light bouncing everywhere.

QUOTE(timothyy @ Jun 21 2008, 11:18 PM)
Hi there. Nice shots u got there. A good start.

Especially on the watch shot, what you can do is lift the front part of the paper to reflect a bit onto the face of the watch... you will get an even nice pic... try it.
*

Thanks for the suggestion! biggrin.gif I will try it out tomorrow.

Not too happy with the shots cause the background is underexposed (not completely white). If I try to make the background white, the cars will overexpose sad.gif I think the cars are just too reflective... not too sure lah.

You can use a dedicated light for the background, then the car won't be overexpose and you can get a completely white background
*

I thought about that but I'm trying to avoid spending money laugh.gif Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for viewing smile.gif

QUOTE(CrossFirE @ Jun 26 2008, 08:11 PM)

Nice work there. You really give an idea to build my own Light Box. Check this out DIY Macro Studio.

From your cars picture, I see that you don't have lighting at the front bcoz it more darker at the front compare to at the top side. I also have this problem because if I use built-in flash (no speedlight), the front side will be to bright. Any suggestion for this?
*

Actually, I did use flash for the car photos. Can check from the EXIF data. But for photos 1 to 4, I didn't use a flash. I don't have a speedlight either so I used my built-in flash. Set it to -4/3 EV and I thought it was just nice as it covered quite a lot of the shadows in front of the car. The flash also seemed to "bring out" the reflection on the glass better - brighter and clearer. Maybe your can try that too? smile.gif

And thanks for the link! That's a very detailed guide in building the lightbox. Perfect for anyone who wants to try this out too thumbup.gif

Is that your blog btw? Mind if I post the link on my blog? It will help anyone looking for a more detailed description of building the box smile.gif And yea, good DIY stuff can really save alot of money.

Quoting the Strobist website, "Good photography equipment can be very expensive but good quality lighting is not".

Its fun man! I followed your footsteps and built myself a lightbox yesterday night with some compress foam boards and corrugated white mounting board. Here are some of my shots. Thanks for the tip. Now I got myself a new toy to play with.  rclxm9.gif
#1
my setup: 1 SB800 + lambency diffuser triggered by cheap china made radio trigger, placed on top of the lightbox
*

Very nice! I've tried using the transparent plastic sheets before but I didn't like them cause I just can't get it to be entirely flat. Hence when I shoot from a low angle, the reflection is rather distorted. Like your photo no. 6, the word Hydra on the reflection is also a bit distorted.

doh.gif  shit...kena poisoned~
its going to be mine weekend new subject~LOL thumbup.gif

Oh ya, where u guys buy those things?? Light..+ papers...
Got 1 question, how to operate the fluorescent tube?? electricity come from...=="
pardon me for noob doh.gif

Thanks dude~
*

Go poison more people tongue.gif Make this LYN's official DIY lightbox thread biggrin.gif

The papers you can just get from any bookstore, stationary shop or supermarket. As for the lights, actually can just use any lights - fluorescent tube, giant torch light, external flash (like garyeow's setup) - are all possible I believe. My fluorescent tube I think my dad mod it liao. It has the 3 pins plug which I just plug into the socket for electricity.

QUOTE(orenzai @ Jul 5 2008, 11:50 AM)
yes...i also trying to find for those equipments...like those white light box you use and those florescent lamps...
*

Like I said not necessarily must be fluorescent lamps smile.gif

Added on July 6, 2008, 8:21 pmSome of you might consider this as "cheating" but I managed to PP the car shots to obtain a perfectly white background.
