Hi insider,

How is he/she doing now? sorry for that devastating diagnosis.

Actually, in malaysia, the best place for cancer treatment is either in Govt/Semi G hospitals. the reason is that, these hospitals dealt with more cases than the private hospitals, so their doctors has more experience.

just that, some of our best consultants have transferred their practice to private and therefore, there's a scarce of consultant in govt hospital.

For me HUKM, HUSM, UMMC, HKL, Hospital Ampang have enough expertise to deal with the problem. for private, SJMC, Gleneagles and Nilai Cancer Institute are some of the famous cancer treatment center.

Just that, we have to be patient with the delay as we must also understand, in G/Semi G hospitals, there are many patients for them to attend to.

While waiting for the next appointment, why dont you go to your family physician or clinic, and notify them about his condition, who is treating doctor in HUKM and other info. so that in the meantime, while waiting for appoinment..refer your problem to this GP (general practitioner). if anything that he (the clinic Dr) founds peculiar about, he'll sure give you necessary advise or even refer ur friend to HUKM for faster admission and appointment.

just my 2 cents smile.gif

when your body has cancer, it's an indication that your body is weak... modern cancer treatment ie chemo is only gonna weaken your body further

what u need is a 180 degree change in diet and lifestyle. Dr Gerson in America has been studying about cancer. his treatment uses natural fruits and veg diet to let your body naturally heals itself. the treatment centres are in mexico & hungary. get more info here: http://gerson.org/GersonTherapy/gersontherapy.htm

my mum had recently detected with Adenocarcinoma cancer stage 1. She has been doing body checkup with HUKM and this its incidentally detection after a xray scan and confirmed with pet ct with biopsy. The surgeon recommended to perform surgery to remove the cancer nodule asap and the cost is about 15-20k under their specialist centre. Anyone know if this si fair price ? What is the cost range for private hospital ?
Appreciate sharing of experience here.

Thank you.

Yeah ... yeah ... totally agree . You can go to the most expensive hospital in the world but if you don't change your lifestyle , there's nothing much that the doctor can do . Most ppl want the easy way to get cured . They want to pop some pill and they don't want to change their lifestyle and expect the disease to go away .

My mom have colon cancer last sept, private hospital charges 30k to remove the cancer tumor but I decided to go UMMC for operation. Within one month Schedule, they
Successfully remove the tumor. All cost around 3500 only.
After that going for chemotherapy after seeing doctor advice..gonna do 30times chemo, each time only cost $30 due to the light dosage. Blood test cost $50,doctor charges $17.
Everything is fine at UMMC only the queue is too long. They have many lecturer/asst professor & oncologist there willing to help.
Thank you.

That's very cheap. Chemo can cost thousands a session in private hospitals.

Your mum probably has just a mild form of cancer then.

5-FU is a very old drug and so is cheaper. A better one is called S-1,
developed in Japan and used extensively there,

It is prodrug of 5-FU, far better absorbed with lesser toxicity.

However, I don't think it is available here, especially in government
hospitals, which will usually give you the older, cheaper drugs where
generics are easily available.

Get some selenium supplements for your mum, and ask her
to take say 400 mcg a day , to reduce the chances of the cancer returning.

Second Opinion before undergoing chemo and radio therapies.

My wife just undergone whipple procedure to remove tumor growth in pancreas head. Its a major surgery and she was hospitalized more than a month. Subsequently She is waiting to undergo chemo and radio therapies at HKL once the surgical wound heal and the cardiologist clears her of heart palpitations problem she experienced since the surgery/hospitalisation. So our concern is should we not go for second opinion before going for the chemo/ radio therapies. Where can we go for second opinion? And we heard we should we do blood/ cancer markers test to determine if we need to go for the therapies. Thank you.

Firstly, be aware the pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive of
cancers, usually discovered only at an advanced stage, with typical
survival measured in months.

Because of its confined location, surgery is difficult and chemo drugs
have a hard time reaching it.

The standard chemo drugs for pancreatic cancer don't work very well.

This regimen looks more promisiing :

Gemcitabine
Oxaliplatin
Cetuximab

Phase 2 trial of induction gemcitabine, oxaliplatin, and cetuximab followed by
selective capecitabine-based chemoradiation in patients with borderline
resectable or unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/24606850/

Your wife's best best are the newer drugs - tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs)
and monoclonal antibodies - which target the growth factor pathways, EGFR,
PDGFR, HER2 and insulin growth factor receptor, IGF-1R.

An improved regimen is :

Gemcitabine
Erlotinib
(The cancer cells eventually become resistant to the above two drugs.)

Other drug combinations :

Everolimus
Sunitinib

Capecitabine
Temozolomide

Two of the newer ones :

Afatinib
Valatinib

Patrick Swayze, who was initially given 4 months to live, managed 20 months,
mainly because he went on valatinib, a HER2 blocker which was experimental
at that time.

Treatment with a combination of the ErbB (HER) family blocker afatinib and
the IGF-IR inhibitor, NVP-AEW541 induces synergistic growth inhibition of
human pancreatic cancer cells.
