As for advancing to new age...here's the requirement.
* Ancient Era - 0 Techs
* Midevial Era - 5 Techs
* Industrial Era - 14 Techs
* Modern Era - 24 Techs

Probable you need to micro-manage more......

Make sure you control the placing of workers accordingly.
And that you have at least a very strong defend group unit for your border city

I don't win Diety all the time either... but it's not impossible. cheers.
