I'm fully aware of what the reviewer said. Whether it can download the map or not is not important and that don't account for the phone is whether a dedicated GPS or A-GPS.
The major factor here is a true GPS unit can log-on into your location as long as your can receive a clear signal from satellite, while AGPS will only able to do that thru. network mask. Due to it lacks of GPS hardware, it needs the network mask to process the satellite data and relay it back to the handset. In actual fact, i would consider it as approximation not log-on. (This software trick can be employ in other normal phone as well, not only C905)
Due to this, when your are oversea, your normal local sim card is not going to work unless you enable roaming and guess what is the cost of using roaming? What if when you are in the jungle for tracking? You loose the phone signal, you loose the AGPS.
i wud say you still abit misunderstand about GPS and AGPS here.
but i explain the bold here. when you are in oversea, you still can get satellite lock but the only thing you cant do is download the maps and AGPS data. thats y the review said you have to get the local simcard to use the GPS, because it doesnt have offline map and googlemap need to download those maps via GPRS.
So, GPS is a chipset for getting your coordinates.
AGPS is to triangulate the position by downloading datas from network and help GPS chipset lock faster.
But AGPS is unusable if there is no GPS chipset preset. unlike iphone2G (which doesnt have GPS) uses network to determine your position but it doesnt use AGPS system, but something similar to it which triangulation via wifi/telco, but we in malaysia isnt like oversea which have wifi station everywhere, hence iphone2G hardly determine the real location of you.

unfortunately, you're still wrong.
gps is gps, no tricks and cons. it'll work as it is, and will not need network access to get it work.
take an example, N95 can lock the position without any network access. the problem with phone GPS device is, they're not as accurate as dedicated gps device, and they take a long time for the initial locking, hence the need of Assisted-GPS, which need the help of GPRS for more information on satelite locking.
you can bring N95 for jungle tracking, no problem, just that it may have a hard time locking the satelite signal due to many trees blocking the sky.
yes i wud agree with ice here. as for jungle trekking, a different type of GPS receiver is needed, something for offroad like my friend owns.
the reason why N95 take slower lock is because of the chipset is not slightly inferior compare with those dedicated GPS unit or even PDA phones. that is why Agps is greatly needed, because when you are lost, you dont want to take 30mins to lock your coordinates.

thanks for the explaination on GPS. I'm still not really familiar with it.
From what I understand that you need some kind of service or go online to triangulate your current position then give directions to where you want to go. So does that mean its like data charges? or a seperate kind of service? Because I have a friend who has a n95 and pays a monthly fee for his gps.
Also, is there a
offline map that can be used with the c905. So lets say if i need to find a place, i just find point A (my current location) manually then locate point B and the program/application finds the fastest route.
That is because ur friend is using Nokia Maps 2.0.. unlike me, i uses Garmin Mobile XT and i dont need to pay fees for GPS usage. and again, C905 googlemap doesnt offers navigation. so it wud not find the fastest/shortest route via googlemap.
