"Butterfly & Melons" » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Copyright 2008 Turtel Onli, oils 18" X 24" is a new Rhythmistic painting that makes subtle suggestions about the delicate balance in nature. Here the subject is wearing motifs for the Sun, Earth, and Water while she gazes at us. Is this gaze a call to action or inaction? Is she at one with this balance of nature? What is her relationship to the items that surround her? Watermelons are powerful symbols in a variety of world cultures and are unique in flavor, color, and nutritional value. Do you know of any symbolic or aesthetic uses or interpretations of the watermelon? This post has been edited by SerioseCat: Jun 10 2008, 10:04 AM

Appreciate this: » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living is an artwork by Damien Hirst (born June 7, 1965), an English artist and the leading artist of the "Young British Artists" (or YBA). It consists of a shark preserved in formaldehyde in a vitrine. It was originally commissioned in 1991 by Charles Saatchi, who sold it in 2004, making Hirst the second most expensive living artist after Jasper Johns (he surpassed Johns in 2007). Due to deterioration of the original 14-foot (4.3 m) tiger shark, it was replaced with a new specimen in 2006. It is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City until 2010. The work was funded by Charles Saatchi, who in 1991 had offered to pay for whatever artwork Hirst wanted to create. The shark itself cost Hirst £6,000 and the total cost of the work was £50,000. The shark was caught by a fisherman commissioned to do so, in Australia. Hirst wanted something "big enough to eat you". ...and this: » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « My Bed is a work by the British artist Tracey Emin. It was exhibited at the Tate Gallery in 1999 as one of the shortlisted works for the Turner Prize. It consisted of her bed with bedroom objects in an abject state, and gained much media attention. Although it did not win the prize, its notoriety has persisted. The artwork generated considerable media furore, particularly over the fact that the bedsheets were stained with body secretions and the floor had items from the artist's room (such as condoms, a pair of knickers with menstrual period stains, other detritus, and functional, everyday objects, including a pair of slippers). The bed was presented as it had been when Emin had not got up from it for several days due to suicidal depression brought on by relationship difficulties. Two performance artists, Yuan Chai and Jian Jun Xi, jumped on the bed with bare torsos in order to "improve" the work, which they thought had not gone far enough. They called their performance Two Naked Men Jump Into Tracey's Bed. The men also had a pillow fight on the bed for around fifteen minutes, to applause from the crowd, before being removed by security guards. The artists were detained but no further action was taken.

Ok enough of french painters. Lets go Dutch! Vincent van Gogh. Self-Portrait in a Grey Felt Hat. 1887. Oil on card.
Van Gogh. This is my favourite of many self portraits. I really feel the energy from this piece of work.

A slight departure from the realm of painters, I present French architect Boulle: Étienne-Louis Boullée, Deuxieme projet pour la Bibliotheque du Rois , c.1785
The architect was "featured" in Peter Greenaway's movie, "The Belly of an Architect". Great movie, i might add.

The Biting Pear of Salamanca - *ursulavFebruary 27, 2006 Sauce: http://ursulav.deviantart.com/art/The-Biti...amanca-29677500QUOTE Artist's Comments A popular tourist attraction of the region, the biting pear lives off low-flying birds, hand-outs, and the occasional unwary sightseer.
---- Don't look at me. I was reading up on pop surrealism before bed, and this is the sort of thing that happens. Even for me, that's a little disturbing.
Also, I may have an unhealthy obsession with pears. This is particularly odd because I haven't eaten a pear in years.
NOTE FOR 4CHAN AND ALL THE REST:
Yes. I know. LOL WUT. Yes, yes. I'm aware. Really, I don't mind that y'all are havin' fun with the image*, the internet is a very silly place and all, but if you could make an effort to include a link to the original when you're posting it, I'd be really grateful.
Thanks!
Anyway! Digital, prints available for $10 and $20 plus shipping--visit [link] or send a note if interested!
If you would like to buy the OFFICIAL, LICENSED, ARTIST-APPROVED pear merchandise--t-shirts, prints, magnets, tote bags, keychains, the lot--mosey on over to [link] for all your biting pear needs.
*As long as it's noncommercial and nobody's making money on lolwut merchandise, of course.

Pearaphim - *ursulavNovember 9, 2005 Sauce: http://ursulav.deviantart.com/art/Pearaphim-25026952QUOTE Artist's Comments ...And then there was a great flash, as of a thousand suns, and the very air itself seemed to burn golden, and a sound came, like the ringing of a thousand golden trumpets, and the squirrel saw before him a being, one of the Great Lords of Fruit, bewing'd and halo'd, one of the mighty pearaphim, the vegetative pillars of heaven. And the pearaph spoke, in a voice both sweet as sweetened fruit juice* and brazen as great metal shields crashing together, and what it said was "FEAR NOT, BRIEF MORTAL--!"
And the squirrel fell backwards in astonishment, for he was sore afraid, and more importantly, very weirded out by the whole thing.
--- I have no explanation whatsoever, except that as usual, it seemed like a good idea. If you want to find a meaning in this, go for it, but it's all you. I have none whatsoever. Even the pun came after the sketch.
Prints available! We have $10 small and $20 jumbo, plus shipping--drop a line or visit [link] to set that up. Great Christmas gifts! Or at least, really WEIRD Christmas gifts, and isn't that just as good?
*Made from concentrate. We're on a budget here, people.

Not too recent » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I'm not sure of which movement, nor the artist itself. Same here .-. I'm pretty sure it's Matisse, showing his lab. Not really a lab .-. One of the Van Gogh's, perhaps? I'll google it, while I'll will left this as it is. Source is unknown, even with the signature. Just love the twilight/dawn after-the-rain there. Some of these are reposts of reposts from somewhere. Alright, later. Great post! The horse one looks familiar...
