QUOTE(Qool @ Nov 24 2008, 08:43 PM)
erm, guys... i still face difficulties with my wifi, some help would be appreciated as I need to find out if its my phone's faulty wifi module or my settings are wrong.

I'm using the Planex wireless USB receiver/Access point thing.
Works fine for my nintendo DS, PS3...

a few settings need confirmation from you guys... these are my settings

1) wireless mode - 802.11 B/G Mixed
2) SSID - my chosen name
3) TX Rate - 1 Mbps
4) Channel - 1
5) B/G protection - Auto
6) Preamble - Long Preamble
7) Beacon(ms) - 100
8) TX Power - 100%
9) Tx Burst - checked
10) No forwarding among wireless clients- checked

I did not set any security as I use the Mac Address filtering. Only allow my devices' Mac Address to access my wireless access point.

My problem is it can detect and connect and thus launches the default browser... but surf a while it will not receive any data anymore. just hanged there. tried on Opera mini also the same.. Opera mobile also the same. But i have yet to test out using starbucks or coffee bean or mcD's free wifi to confirm.

Pls kindly help..... thanks a bunch!
*
I am suspecting the Mac Address Filtering to be the culprit. Try to set back to normal withour MAC Add Filter n see whether it works. Its also good to try from other access points.

-bluetooth gps
-assisted gps
-integrated gps
-network base

after i launch garmin, it automatically detecting GPS device (even ask me to turn on bluetooth). but after awhile, it failed and error message return as "no gps device found"..

is it something wrong with my hp?
*

so far, GPS on my N85 have been great. Both Nokia Maps & Garmin Mobile XT working flawlessly and I've disabled A-GPS and Network in the Positioning settings.

I don't want to download googlemaps everytime I boot the GPS up, so I just need to use Garmin Mobile XT ?  smile.gif
*
I haven't used Google Maps b4 but I thought it ain't a navigation system with voice direction.

For navigation w/ voice : yes, u should use the Garmin Mobile XT which I think should be the best for S60 based phones.

cool, so I wont be charged anything if I used it right ?

Self installed or does it come with the phone ?
*
U actually have to purchase Garmin Mobile XT. GPS usage is FOC though.

Garmin does not come installed with the N85 but I believe some retailers would be obliged to do it for u if u request them to. Otherwise, do a google brows.gif

QUOTE(ihawk98 @ Dec 1 2008, 11:46 AM)
is there a difference? i typically install it in the Memory Card.  i copy the .sis file into the THEMES folder.  then use File manager to go to this folder and click open to install.
*
Installation of themes are rite but note that there's no 'Delete' function for themes in the phone nor does it have any removal function from the Nokia Apps.

You'll have to remove it the "MANUAL" way. Lucky u installed them in the memory card. I wouldn't have any idea if u place it in the phone memory.

Steps to remove themes (from memory card) :

1. Connect the phone via USB cable and select the Mass Storage mode.
2. Using My Computer, browse the memory card. Activate "Show Hidden Files" in your windows.
3. Goto hidden folder named : Private
4. Goto folder named : 10207114 (inside Private)
5. You will see many folders with names like strings of numbers and alphabets. One theme in each folder.
6. Goto inside each folder.
7. Using notepad, open the file with .skn extension.
8. Try to distinguish the name of the theme within the codes in the file opened by your notepad. (Tips : Scroll horizontally)
9. Once u identified the name of the theme u wish to delete, close the notepad, remember the name of the folder.
10. Delete the folder with all its contents inside.
11. Do the same for other themes u wish to delete.

QUOTE(corad @ Dec 1 2008, 11:54 AM)
this is going to be a blunt question , but which GPS is better , nokia n85 or samsung INNOV8 (i8510) ?

sorry for repeating, but I'm trading in phones tmr .. so have to decide quickyl  blush.gif
*
Can't answer u on that, I have not touched or seen an INNOV8. But I can tell u this. Initially I was deciding between N85 and SE C905 which also has GPS. My only reason choosing N85 is that N85 being S60 has the capability to install 3rd party application such as the Garmin while the C905 is I think S40 or SE proprietary OS. So C905 is only limited to the GPS software that comes with it or u can just install Java Applets which I do not think there's any GPS nav software available.

Garmin advantage over the Nokia Maps or even SE's nav software (dunno what's the name) is that there's a local community in a forum constantly contributing towards updating the local (Malaysia & Singapore) map so u can be assured of the latest up to date map available. For nokia and se, their application is good (Nokia Maps no need to 'recalculate' to give u an alternate route when u miss a turn) but no matter how good a software is, if the map and routing table is not up to date, it is as good as unusable. There's once Nokia Maps asking me to turn right at the T junction where its only one way street to the left. Malaysian roads change all the time and u need up to date maps.

How can you view the hidden folder? I thought N85 is unh**kable & only h**ked phone can view the hidden folder?
*
Like Alexdino mentioned....its not the phone's system folder I am referring to. Its the memory card's hidden folder. So u just go to My Computer and at the top menu go to Tools > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden Files and Folders. sweat.gif

QUOTE(Alexdino @ Dec 1 2008, 02:11 PM)
is it my phone problem or the gps connectivity for today is poor.

I have been able to get only a bar of satellite signal for waiting of 15 minutes.

i using main menu tools=>Connections=>GPS data , then options=> to test the Satellite status and it is also 1 grey bar available only.

From what I know to be able to navigate i need at least 4 bar
*
Well, N85 does not come with the most sensitive GPS receiver and very much depending on the environment (in a car, heavy tint, bad weather, blocked by tall buildings in the vicinity, sat is at a difficult line of sight angle to u, stardust blocking the sat n u laugh.gif ) at times, u might be able to get more sat connected if u start moving and come to a better reception area. At times, if the area u are in is bad, even u waited for 1 hour would not yield u a good result. This applies not just to the N85 but for all GPS receivers.

QUOTE(ihawk98 @ Dec 1 2008, 02:13 PM)
thanks for the guide.  i can't believe that Nokia still hasn't implemented an easy delete function for installed themes.  in my previous SE phones, just hightlight and delete the theme was all it took.
*
yeah, i can't believe it too...i spent like 30 mins trying and exploring the menus and the Nokia apps for a delete function till i gave up on it n start googling doh.gif

wear a glove tongue.gif

or get other phone hmm.gif

honestly, if u skin it, you're not gonna enjoy the feel of the phone.

If u wanna get this phone, then enjoy it to the fullest, just clean it whenever u can but when using, just use it like normal. That'z how u enjoy the N85 laugh.gif

I been using 6110 and it works awesome with fast connectivity...... sweat.gif  maybe i been spoiled by 6110 fast connectivity speed,,,,...........

I on a clear sky this morning and keep still keep getting "signal lost"......

im searching through nokia website and found that the poor satellite signal is because the gps device on n85 is at the back of the battery cover. hmm.gif i have been advice to take out the battery cover to test the signal again..... if i can recieve the signal means that my n85 maybe faulty.
*
hrm, sounds like your N85 has very weak reception. Mine does not perform as bad. So far, if i can see the sky (not in tunnel, etc) theres no lost signal at all.

U might wanna have it checked!

I m using it in an upright position that is using a phone holder in my car.

QUOTE(reevephon @ Dec 1 2008, 06:07 PM)
can some one tell me what is OLED and whats so special about it?
*
OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode

Typical LCD screen requires backlight and in usual case uses fluorescent backlight. Newer mode advance tech uses LED backlight. LED in this sense is the typical white colour LED. OLED is different because the backlight is not generated by any other means but the LCD screen itself. This tech enables the specific part of the screen to glow and glow in the amount required to produce the clarity and brightness. Other areas that do not need light (example black colour) will not light.

OLED gives, more contrast colour and blacker black compared to typical LCD. The organic thing glow when a low voltage is applied and by making specific area glow only means u get more efficient energy consumption. OLED screens typically squeeze less juice than the LCD n yet produces better pictures.

For typical LCD, the backlight's brightness is fixed, its like a panel of white light.

Our N85 uses AM OLED (Active Matrix OLED), supposedly has a lifespan of 30,000 hours. OLED main disadvantage is short lifespan. Normal OLED can lasts only around 15,000 hours compared to LED backlight which lasts at least 60,000 hours. This AM OLED is much improved such that it's lifespan is not double that of typical OLED.

Above explanation is pretty layman in my own words, certainly not structured properly, hope u can understand what i am saying doh.gif

Seriously, N85 cant delete theme? All previous S60 devices i use capable of that. All themes installed should show up in application manager unless the theme not created according to specification.
*
Are your previous S60 device a Nokia? I have not been using a Nokia since the 8850 era so, no idea whether it has been like that all this while. But yes, it is seriously a problem when it comes to removing themes. Real unfriendly method.
QUOTE(reevephon @ Dec 2 2008, 07:10 AM)
Thx man I understand what you were saying, how about if the OLED over the lifespan? Do we need to change or? How much does it cost?
*
Yeah, when the lifespan over, so does your phone. I bet the transmitting device's lifespan will be even shorter than the OLED, even the battery yeah. And usually most people changes phone waaay before any component of its current phone reaches its lifespan.

Even if u don't change phone, by the time the lifespan reaches, screen replacement would be pretty cheap. No idea on the cost at the moment though.

...... i try to format the phone and test again
*
How is it now bro?? Eager to know ur result. Try factory reset the phone but not reformat the memory card coz I believe its got nothing to do with the memory card unless u r suspecting the GPS application is corrupt.

I just figured out why my GPS isnt locking.

I recheck my setting for GPS positioning. Turns out I had Assisted GPS ticked and Integrated GPS tick. Now I went on and untick Assisted GPS and now whenever I on GPS, it will lock on the sattelite pretty fast. Almost instantly if Im near the window in my house or on open space.
*
ah, i been using the GPS with only the integrated GPS ticked. all the rest are unticked. Works fine for me too and the speed is satiafactory.

easy to understand...
A-GPS = kene bayar...
Intergrated GPS = FOC..

right?? blink.gif
*
You're rite about A-GPS & Integrated GPS.

But my question is about 'Network'.

Thing is, A-GPS functions pretty close to Network, so what does Network do? A-GPS, if u read from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-GPS, says that it uses the telco tower (several) to triangulate your location and therefore assist the GPS sat to locate u faster.

So, that's the explanation of A-GPS, how about Network?

You're rite about that too but how about the Network??

By the way, I got my N85 updated to the latest firmware. Hrm, the startup and ask u for security code bug still exist. hmm.gif

MAKE SURE BEFORE U BEGIN UR BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED

use NSS to change your product code and update using NSU.

Install NSS
Install NSU
Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
Open NSS and click on “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
Click on the icon « Phone info »
Click on “Scan”
Open « gsm-magic » without closing NSS, then push the button « Enable » of “gsm-magic”.
As you can see, now you can change the product code (on the right of the « phone info » window of NSS).
For a Nokia N85, type the product code 0561292 (Malaysia) or 0561289 (singapore) and then mark the case “Enable”.
Now press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
Close NSS and “gsm-magic” and you can proceed now with the NSU flashing.
When the flashing with NSU is over, start-up your phone.
or using phoenix software to update using APAC package.

Install Phoenix_Service_Software. (you can google for it cause im not allow to post xxx version)
then install APAC package http://www.megaupload.com/?d=V8FK3IS4

Using Phoenix

Run the program
Create User if it asks to.
Connection, select USB and apply it.
Connect phone, select scan product.
then Flashing then firmware update
select your product code and refurbish and do what the insturction ask for.

LASTLY DO AT YOUR OWN RISK.

to be safe go to a shop or your warrenty and ask them install it for you for a small fee.

But through my experience phoenix is much stable than NSU.  sweat.gif
