Hi,
Ornamental fish import is not allowed in India. But if you hand carry one or two fishes when you come from abroad normally customs wont trouble you but some times they seize that also. There are some carriers who brings all sorts of ornamental fishes from Singapore and there are some traders who purchases it from them and sell it to the local shops.

I got both the rays like that. Getting rare varieties in Indian market is very very difficult. Carriers bring only items that can be sold  immedietly.

Being an expert in Sting ray could you pls help me out to provide my sting rays a better enviornment in the tank. I am a begginer in Sting ray.I have the following doubts,I hope you will clarify those.

1) How big the aquarium should be ( They are 4-5" in diameter ),What type of subsrate is suitable, and what type of filteration is ideal.

2) What all feeds do they take.(At present I am feeding them with only peeled prowns, they are not taking any thing else)

3) Is it possible to diferentiate the sex at this size.

I hope you will not hesitate to give your advice.
Thank you

Regards

Ajay

Ajay, i would try my best to answer as much as i know from what i learn.....im not a pro yet...still a student learning about the nature of this freshwater stingray....so i hope every1 out there can share their experience here....n correct me if im wrong....smile.gif

the rule for keeping stingray is , keep it in a tank as big as possible....rays like big tank....for example like yours, a 4 feet tank would be enough at this moment...but will need a bigger one when they grow bigger....
a tank dats big as 6 x 3 x 3 would probably able to keep 4 adult stingray......

foods that they take would be shrimp, live fish, earth worm ....etc.....more to things that is soft or not too hard as well as things that can be fit in its mouth!.....so if you are thinking to comm tank ur stingrays with other fish, try to get the fish that not easily fit into rays mouth as they will clean up everything dat the tank have....

the sex diffenrentiation can be found in this thread somewhere in the pages 2....i have post up the topic on how to differentiate the sex there....wink.gif

anyway, im not hesitate to share!! i love sharing!!...smile.gif

by the way, nice to know u n get some new info that india is hard to get ornamental fish...wat a sad thing....
any reason that the govenrment do not allow ornamental fish to be import to india???

wow....dats is so problematic to get ornamental fish in india......

chilly red?? erm....probable RM2000 to RM3500....depend on quality....
there is no such thing called guaranteed in raring arowana....its mostly depend on how you take care of it...they need skill....so, hard to giv u a guaranteed on this...smile.gif

so, how much u purchase for both ur stingray?
they are male or female?

oohh...ur stingrays is around that price for selling in LFS of Malaysia....so, not to worry that you bought too expensive!...wink.gif
by the way, for arowana, in order for breeders/distributer/ etc...they definitely require a tag on the arowana..we could not simply export the fish out of the country without a tag on the aro...because arowana is control under CITES...
from what you said n what i read thru, you might be right but you might be wrong too....
for example, if you bought that arowana (let say 4years ago), then you might be wrong, because red arowana onli will start develop it potential colour when it reach the matured/old age....but during this time, due to better quality and special care, red aro tend to start developing it colour when it is still young....BUT BUT BUT....red arowana realli do need skill....it depend on what you feed them, how your tank structure, your water condition and so on.....so, good luck!...even me myself sometime do face prob like ppl out there where the red arowana doesnt look great like others ppl arowana.....smile.gif

im looking to get more higher quality stingray now.....plaaning to go into getting marble stingray and SP

Its normal ajay, some of my stingray doesnt eat prawn but onli fishes.....mayb its their appetite problem....u can train it by not given them food for 1 or 2 day, then try with the new food that you wanted them to eat....but make sure do not over starve ur rays......in order to make this food eating changes, make sure ur ray is healthy and look fat.....because its dangerous to train n starved and unhealthy stingray....

Normally a stingray can take about 8 to 12months in order to reach 8" diameter....depend on the ray itself....

Hi, One of my sting rays is not taking any food.He used to take prawns or earth worms.but for the last two days he is not showing any interest to food.Today when I gave him small peices of earth worms he is trying to eat it but after chewing it for long time he spited it out. What could be the reason ? What should I do ? Some times he is not laying flat on the bottom instead like an arch ( Without touching the bottom of its body fully on the floor ). Please help me ....

Ajay

Bro Ajay, I think might be your water condition is not going well with the ray.....u should check ur water parameter....such as PH, NH3 and Nh4.....water condition is vy important for freshwater stingray....not flat on the bottom instead of looking like an arch??!! i hope its not wat we called "death curl"......if its a death curl, then its hard to safe it....so,hav a check on the water condition, and do water changes ....onli changes about 20-30% at once...not too much...and make sure ur water going into the tank is safe from hurting ur ray....smile.gif

QUOTE(conangirl @ Aug 17 2008, 10:04 PM)
will they fight with each other when in the same tank?
*
they dont fight with each other....but sometime will happen if more male fighting for 1 female when they are matured....smile.gif jus like human.....or else, they wont fight if they are feed well....

how to play around with them... if they can STING us...
i dont wan to die like crocodile hunter... >_<
*
hmm....u wont die like crocodile hunter....smile.gif
freshwater stingray will not sting easily....onli when they feel unsecure...
and if get stung, no worries, keeping stingray rules - deep your stung-ed part into warm/hot water...then the poison would not spread....normally u will feel abit numb when u got stung...but evrything will be fine...go to doctor if u feel uncomfortable...smile.gif
u can train ur ray using hand feed....stingray can be hand feed....it the fun part of keeping a ray....and ray will be vy happi see-ing going near them ....(when u walk near the tank).....smile.gif
hav fun keeping stingray!!! if u dun hav...get one!!!

Hi,thank you for your advice. I changed the water  the moment I noticed its behavioral changes.today also I changed nearly 30 %.But the other one ( Female )was very comfotrable at that time. I used to change 30 - 40 % water every week. Today also when I gave him prawns it took it in the mouth, chewed for some time then left it just like that... I do not know what is wrong with him...Any infections !! Does it require any antibiotic treatment ?
*
u r welcome....ajay, try not to water change too much at a time....20% is more than enough....if u feel not good enough...change it few hours later.... what kind of prawn u feed them? live prawn or market prawn??? live prawn would be a good food for rays.....infection?? mayb...mayb not....so, keep up wit water changes but not too much in a time....and feed them good stuff......rays doesnt goes well with soe medicine....no to antibiotic...so, do not simply apply medi onto ray....water changes would be good enough....hope everything will be fine
