I think parents just love their children too much to the extent of causing them harm. Just my opinion though

@jeff_ckf,
I don't disagree with the act of parents issuing a supplementary card to the child for emergency purposes; esp when they're not with them. In fact, I got my 1st credit card [through the supplementary program of course] when I was 14. The difference is that my folks trusted me with the card and knew I wouldn't abuse it.

The bank had initially recommended RM1k CL but dad said that was too lil and gave me RM3k which was later increased to RM7k then RM10k when I went overseas to study. I never used that card as I had sufficient cash, or the card was used only for emergency purposes.

If I can't even manage cash, what makes U think I be able to manage a credit card? It's not about love, it's about responsibility.

@ifeel100,
It's OK for the folks to issue a suppementary card to their kids if their kids are responsible. It is pretty good for emergency purposes but a lot of kids seem to think buying that blouse or shoe is emergency! *gulps*

@hye,

I don't think you see my point tongue.gif You see, if the parents are like your parents and can educate a responsible daughter, obviously the credit card would be just an emergency tool.

On the other hand, for some parents that don't really instill responsibility but rather feel that money would make everything okay type (trust me there are alot doh.gif ), they WILL be sweet talked and they wouldn't mind issuing such credit cards to their children. And we all know the story afterwards biggrin.gif

Heck, even with the PTPTN some students can buy a superbike....obviously thinking is not exactly a strong skill of some students sweat.gif

@jeff_ckf,
I see and get ur point. Parents would know if their kids are financially responsible. For those who knows their kids can't keep $ but yet decide to get a supplementary card for them, well they're just killing their child.

Yep, but these ppl do exist. Let's just hope they change or else their children will be the sacrificial lambs

hmmmm... well i got my supp card once i was legal to own one, 18. i wonder how tinkerbel got hers when she was only 14?

anyway, my point was... the purpose of credit card is to use it when you dont have any cash on you and use it WISELY... it has nothing to do with EMERGENCY or not... and about buying clothes is not EMERGENCY but hey, what if i use it WISELY when i go shopping and i dont have enough cash? and it's within my budget... that is no wrong...

because... when you are using what you are meant to use, then it's not abusing, it's just the same as using your cash... if my monthly allowance is rm2k, and i use my credit card to buy clothes for rm1.5k... i am still using it wisely within abusing it and NOT for emergency... nothing's wrong with it though...

@eRiCCa,
In the past, BNM rules weren't as strict on issuance of Supp card but apparently it was being abused hence the rule got much stricter a year or two after. Sis wasn't allowed a supp card until she was 18. I guess I was just lucky.

You're right about using it as cash/emergency. Nett nett at the end of the day, it's a big responsibility and it shouldn't fall into the hands of the irresponsibles.
