QUOTE(naith @ Sep 4 2008, 08:26 PM)
I was wondering if any of you have a suggestion for my dilemma:

I have a Star Trek model (Enterprise-E smile.gif ) which I bought about a decade ago(I was really young back then, so didn't really understand some of the instructions). There's a step in the instructions which instructs us to put a 1 gram weight on each of the nacelles(the pair of long things on the starship) to offset the balance.

Unfortunately, since the nacelles have already been assembled, it's little difficult to put weights into it. I have been able to pry open the rear tip of the nacelles, which gives on opening of roughly 0.5 cm in diameter. Could you guys suggest an object I could use a weight that can fit into it? The instructions suggested an epoxy weight, but I'm not sure where to get those(added to the fact that the instructions suggested that it's placed inside the nacelle before it's assembled)

On another issue, I painted the end of the end of the nacelle in clear red from the inside(I think I was originally planning to put an LED inside, but decided not too) Can a Tamiya spray can be modified with a long nozzle(something like a straw but thinner) so that I can fit it through the same hole which I pried open earlier? And if so, how is that done?
*
Get silicon glue like toothpaste. Squece how many gram inside as you like. Because it's paste form, easy for you to put inside a hole.

Any brand will do. Normally it state,' Silicon glue for fish tank' , " multi purpose silicon" or "silicon for gasket". Some with clear form and some is red or black. Any hardware or supermarket got sell. Get the cheapest one will do.

Try to mix with some clear gloss paint an paint together. Or AB a layer of gloss paint. That will give you very shine surface.

Ok, ive asked this before, but in wrong thread. maybe ill get my answers here!

Where in KL can I find a air brush kit? I checked the "list of shops" sticky thred and it says that XL got painting supplies. Checked their online shop, they sell the paints, but do they also sell the air brush?

Also... any particular brand of air brush i should be looking for? and.. like... whats the standard kit or an airbrsuh kit anyway?

thanks u in advance!!!

You can it at
1) miniaturehobby opposite digital mall PJ.
2) Wisma astria damansara but forget the name of the hobbyshop. You can find it easily as the wisma not that big.
3) Multifilla in balakong
4) military hobby at beside yowchuan plaza. Forget the shopping name.
Any taiwan 0.3mm AB is good enough. The best is Iwata where you can get it at http://www.hobbiescorner.com/ and HLJ.

Normally I use a stick to see the dripping. If the paint dripping is like a dot and non continues, than the mixture is right. But sometime I do AB with thicker paint. Just increase the air pressure will do.

3) I've read about the basic tamiya air compressor from the previous few pages that cost about RM200 n is battery powered. Can I get that at one of the shops here? Cuz buying on9 is not an option for me.

Thx in advance!
*

1U underground have it. But I think the price is more than RM200. You can buy an adaptor to replace the battery. So you can use longer time and no need charge.

increase the air pressure will mean wasting of paint.....over pressure will end up the paint particle too hazel, your room will be full of paint haze, hazarous oso....

reason we use AB is to save paint, not waste it....
*
Sometime I want to cover the surface one shot rather few time. So make the paint thicker and increase the pressure. For the mist paint flying around, I use tamiya exhaust fan to suck it out and cover my mouth and nose with mask. Hope won't die fast. tongue.gif

Good ab like iwata can't get in KL. You got to order online. For other like Badger, you can get it from art shop, garden megamall. Got a shop in astria, damansara, left one tamiya ab (highend 1). You may quickly go and grab it.

Why you guys like to use others thinner to mix with hobby paint? It bad for plastic and not the best for the paint. Is it the cost?

well... can't blame those who tried alternatives..

believe it or not.. not all people stock up their paint and thinner well..
so unfortunate hobby thinner well just out of stock and u can be waiting for weeks and weeks by time the restock.. worse, with newer (more) expensif price...
*
I read here many newbie here like to use normal thinner or not sure or confuse with the mixing. One bottle hobby thinner can use quite longtime unless you use it to clean ab or drink. tongue.gif
For play safe and sure no problem, Mr.color/ gunze paint use mr.thinner. Tamiya paint use tamiya thinner. Simple as that. For cleaning ab, than use normal thinner or ab thinner. For cleaning brush, either tamiya/water or mr.color/mr.thinner.

if i wash my gundam parts with mr hobby thinner will the plastic melt?
coz i was so stpd to play a lining marker on it then it appears when i ab the parts. i tried resurface but the lining does not goes off and it makes the surface thicker.. haizzz doh.gif

now thinkin to wash it with thinner, but b4 i do this, i wanna know if this action will make the things worse...

editted: does not goes off means that it still viewable after paint is applied.  icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif

Compressor has a needle valve on the bottom of the moisture trap, seems if i block the nozzle head and let the compressor run, and press the needle valve air comes out from i don't know where. But can still see moisture inside the trap...

Also there's another hole facing us next to the nozzle I don't know what is it for?

Comparison of Gunze gun, connectors (top left both ends) and compressor nozzle top right.

The only way to clear the moisture is unscrew the filter clear parts. It is very hard but can be unscrew. Cause high pressure it need to secure tight. The needle below the filter is for drain the water when it full but can't drain those small water droplet stick at the filter wall. You need to block the air and run the compressor till the pressure built up. Than press the needle below the filter to purge the water out. This would be much effective but not 100% dry. Next time get a compressor with tank. The tank act as a second filter and the air temperature will drop faster. Result you won't spray moisture out.

Your AB is a basic outside mix type. Some paint will dry at the nozzle tip. Some clog and dry paint will spray out from beginning if you stop too long. Specially fast dry paint. Get the double action AB next time if you have budget.

QUOTE(advocado @ Mar 18 2009, 01:14 PM)
hi, i don't dare to touch the hose, because it might affect the tightness & sealing of the hose which may result in air leaks. Also don't know what sizes of hose to get.

If can I would like to modify the hose to fit my Gunze Sangyo pro-spray mk-iii. What do you guys think about this brush compared to toploaded? I notice Toploaded paint can spray longer while bottom loaded finishes pretty quick.

My compressor has a tiny airtank for buffering, there's a moisture trap i can see moisture accumulated in the trap. So how do i remove the trap? Is it auto drain or I need to do something?
*
don't worry about the hose. AS long as the fitting inside have a seal and not broken, the air won't leakout. I don't like to use those screw type fitting. Troublesome and take time when change AB. I have change it to one touch fitting which I just plug/unplug the hose in. And standardize to all the AB. Or use a divider to divide to two hose.
Topload paint spray much more easlly and don't need high pressure. It use gravity to help the paint feed down. Normally bottom load is for high volume spray which you can attach a larger tank/bottle. Not easlly spray with thick paint since it need to suckup. sad.gif
