I have been having many "first" recently by going out to shoot almost every weekend. This was my first outdoor potrait shoot and also the model's first. This was shot in Kelana Jaya Park.

While we were about to start, it started pouring, so while waiting for the rain to stop at a nearby pathway, I took a shot:

After the rain stopped, we decided to experiment with strobist.

Then it was time to do some real outdoorish stuff:

All shots were taken with Nikon D300 and 70-200mm. Do comment on my first try so that I can improve in the future in the event I get another chance smile.gif

Thanks!

dam sharp huh, 70-200 VR.

#1 lighting is nice but the plant behind is distracting

#2 i think u need another flash from the right of the model to counter the strong flash from left..

#3 not bad, jsut that my eyes focus on that plant showing off at the bottom left  tongue.gif

#5 is good, clean background and sharp subject.
perhaps u should have a try on non tight crop portrait? one thing about LYN, most of the portraits are tight crop style that it is getting boring.
remember portrait not always have to be sharp, clear, noise clean, tight crop..
i see u can control your exposure quite well.
just my opinion, u might ignore it
*
Now why would I want to ignore people's opinion? Whole reason to start the thread is to get opinions smile.gif

#1 Ahh thought it added a bit of colour. Looks like it can be quite distracting.

#2 Either a flash from the right, or tone down the power of the flash from the left. Noted, thanks! Was experimenting that day..

#3 Gasp, didn't notice that plant. And I thought I got all distracting element out tongue.gif

#5 thanks and yep the 70-200mm is indeed a sharp lens smile.gif

I do have some shots which are non-tight crop. Well, at least I think they are. Probably will share some later smile.gif Thanks for the constructive comments smile.gif

wow... sharp lens...
hehe... #2 not very nice ,and #4 is abit too tight IMO blush.gif
I like 1, 3 and 5... thumbup.gif
*
Thanks smile.gif Yep #2 could have been better smile.gif

I really like no 1 & 5, due to its strong bokeh! thumbup.gif Subject is sharp and clean as well.

My comment is the compo could be better. Even better if the model is looking at ur lens rather than not looking at ur lens.
*
Thanks smile.gif Ahhh yes, some shots are better with the model looking at my lens (which I have a few) but no idea why I always prefer people to look elsewhere tongue.gif

But I shall try that the next time smile.gif

I also like 5. Tight crop, somehow easier to shoot I think. So must learn take whole body.

Lol thats true smile.gif Shall try more full body shots next time smile.gif

brotha! its been a while! tongue.gif

okay, my turn, my turn! laugh.gif
my comments about your photos :
1) cant spot anything wrong with compo, i thought you like bright pictures more? tongue.gif

2) very nice effect! butttt, shooting on an downward angle for portraits doesnt work most of the time.

3) super nice nikon colors! the hands were chopped off though. try another angle nod.gif

4) nice compo and colors!

5) ahhh i like this one! can be refined, give it a little more space on top, then its perfect for my opinion nod.gif

whahey, its my opinion though. now lets argue! tongue.gif
*
1) Ehh not bright meh? My monitor very bright? tongue.gif

2) I was actually shooting up, I am not that tall to shoot downwards biggrin.gif

3) I had shots where the hands were not chopped off smile.gif Shall share that next, but 70-200 means I had to stand very far to make that happen. And the angle was there because the other side means dustbins would have been in the shot

4) thanks smile.gif

5) True, the crop could have been too tight

Pretty gal... I like her  wub.gif

But I think your constrast is simply too much. My experince with D300 is not like that... Maybe you increase that on photoshop too much until shadow area all turn to black... Constrast just too much... Such technique applied to old people good la... But not to young and pretty gal like her.

Ehhh... dont think I've played with contrast. I didn't do any PP except for cropping and watermark.

wah...makes me feel like getting a dslr already~
cheapest nikon punya how much?
*
Lol the D40 is the cheapest and you can find 2nd hand units with kit lens below RM1500 I believe.

QUOTE(travis_ckf @ May 25 2008, 01:31 PM)
I would say not bad for a 1st attempt from u. But try variety of themes or posing coz these pics look like an outing with ur fren in a park during an boring afternoon/morning. Ur models needs to be cheerful n happy while posing, and most importantly, make her enjoy herself.

Pic quality wise, no complains but compliments! thumbup.gif

Thanks, yep agreed that we needed to communicate more to the model on the poses.. I think she was quite relaxed and I hope she enjoyed herself tongue.gif Other than getting caught in the rain.

#2 : weird lighting
#3 : dont like way her hands being chopped
*
#2: was experimenting tongue.gif Will experiment more to get it right!
#3: True, could have included her hands, but when i decided to use the picture, somehow I didn't think her hands were fully needed tongue.gif

QUOTE(vkeong @ May 28 2008, 12:21 AM)
#3's smile is the most natural.. smile.gif
*
I think she was playing around at that time and we told her it was a good pose smile.gif

QUOTE(orenzai @ May 28 2008, 12:29 AM)
from what i can see this model has...somewhat big nostrils...so maybe try not to shoot from a low angle smile.gif
*
Really? Maybe shooting low angle exaggerated that smile.gif
