i just found out from 1 of irene's buyers that her puppy died 2 weeks after collection. he was infected with canine distemper virus. the owner noticed the symptoms only after they reached KL.

after we exchanged stories, i found out that her puppy and scubby shared some health problems. too long story to write here.

if you have friends interested to buy her westies, ask them to think twice.

all puppies are cute, so why buy one with potential health problems? and not cheap - medical bill or the dog.

Hi All Westies Lover

What Jac said is true.

I am the buyer that bought from Irene, her first batch of westies. We bought Taco from Irene and he had seizure on the second night we got him. We got him on a Sunday and on the second sunday he died after we sent him to a vet because he had seizure. And seizure is the symptom that happened at the last stage of canine distemper. Of course i went back to Irene to tell her what happened and ask her if we can get a partial refund because we paid alot for Taco. We argued on the phone, Irene then only told us that the 'gurantee' was only 5 days, which she never told us before and in the end Irene hung up on us (my sister and i). obviously the issue was never resolved. that was more than a year ago.

Altho it was 2 short weeks we had Taco, i was so smitten by him. After a year i didnt manage to get over Taco and through out last year till now i still visit Irene's website to look at her westies because i never manage to find a westie like Taco.

After 1 year, my boyfriend and i decided to give Irene's westie another chance, (this is the part where everyone will come in to tell me that i am insane) so I went back to Irene. My bf and i drove up to Penang to visit Irene and have a very good look at the puppies. In the end we left with Puffy, it was only after much consideration, debate and sane and objective mind.

Now Puffy has been with us for almost a month already. He is not showing any signs of distemper (i was most worried about), i have been doing all i can to prevent it. However, Puffy do have seborrhea, and for westie's, i've read, it is a genetic disease. I am doing all i can to reduce any potential harm to Puffy from seborrhea. I can say that, I am not regretting much for buying Puffy from Irene but I do hope that Puffy have a good and healthy life. So now all I can is to try to get him as close to that as possible.

Puffy have seborrhea? I have an email from Irene below confirming that her dogs is free from skin problems  vmad.gif

From: Irene Kang <irenekang116@gmail.com>

Hi Jaclyn,

No,  both parents have no history of skin problem.

See you soon,
Irene

Irene Kang is just full of lies!
I hope Scubby will not suffer the same fate. Having suspected Canine Hip Dysplasia is already bad enough  cry.gif

Yes he have sad.gif

but i guess her dogs, Ozzy and Christy doesnt appear to have it maybe because it is reccessive gene in them.

i am so worried now like i am not sure when Puffy will get another round of infection once he stop his antibiotics.

any other westies owner out there know anything about seborrhea?

Westie owners seems to be growing in numbers since this thread started. Very nice!
Not sure if Royal Canine allergy kibbles are good but vet usually recommend something like Science Plan, refer to what ihawk98 wrote for his westie, Buffy. I think it's a z/d pack.

You need to shower your dog often to avoid the fleas from biting him. Try malaseb once in a while as it works well against fleas and ticks. Give it a shot.
Welcome, very nice puppy indeed. Where is your location and how much did you bought Puffy for, if u dont mind sharing. smile.gif

I am from KL, Bukit Damansara to be exact.

Irene gave me a discount for Puffy because the first puppy i bought from her a year ago died after 2 weeks. Puffy was actually selling cheaper compared to the other westies she sold.

yeah, may be he is still a puppy( almost 8 months old)... have to correct him time to time..

Yes, His tail is recovering, wound has dried and the skin has fallen.. but one thing now like sudah botak( only can see his pink skin )... dunno whether his licking will affect the speed of recovery or not... I play fetch wif him every day, so he seems to love it (cos he gets his treats) and didnt chase his tail...

Westies are alert type of dogs....they are also known as hunting dogs, alittle movement or sound outside can trigger them to bark easily. I know they are cute but better make sure whether u r ready to commit urself to them or not, this dogs r wit you for a long term man. U muz alwaz get ready wit skin issues, diet, training and etc. These westies are considered as active dogs where they need to utilize their energy from time to time.

U can get a westie starting from RM2k+ and above vary on the quality of the breed.

Wat medication is he taking now to control his skin probs? He's still a pup and already diagnose wit skin probs...poor guy. U bought it from Irene rite?
*
before this he wasnt taking any medication just omega fatty acids oil and supplements to boost his immune system, i also shower him with malaseb twice a week cause the vet said that he has sebborrhea. he only took had skin infections and had to take antibiotics to control it and that was a couple of months back

a couple of weeks ago when i came back from my trip he had skin very bad skin infection and scabs collected at the end of his ears, i brought him to a different vet cause it is nearer can i couldnt wait already. the vet said that he has mange, so now he is on antibiotics and mange medication. hopefully the mange medication works and he wouldnt have any more skin infections after this sad.gif

i am monitoring his food, i changed his food from the normal eukanuba puppy food to lamb and rice puppy food. hopefully he will be better

and yes i got him from irene

Since puppy he has all this skin problems already, really pity him. My male westie 'Casper' is still under medication also...haven really recover by now....previously i have to bring him to UPM every week to monitor his condition, now its every month...i got to bath him every alternate days so that those crust doest flare out. Its really troublesome to hav dogs tat is diagnose wit skin probs and it really consume alot of time to make sure everything its alright.

I hope yours westie skin prob will b under control.
*
What kind of skin problem does Casper has? Is he under antibiotic medication? do you use malaseb too?

it is troublesome and worrying to have a puppy with skin problem but until now i still havent regret getting Puffy. i cant imagine having another puppy apart from him. i guess taking care of a puppy/doggy is like taking care of a real baby. my family always joke that Puffy is my son

Casper skin was found with Demodax mites after doing a biopsy test on him, tats one of the main reason tat causes skin problem in him, currently he is not taking any antibiotics becoz he has been taking varieties of antibiotics in the previous years and causes resistant to many antibiotics now...another thing is due to his age aso. Now he's using Benzoyl Peroxide, its a medicated shampoo also which is similar to malaseb or sebolyse.

Anyway...his skin condition is still under control but i muz keep on monitoring time to time to check whether there is any new break out anot. Im like his personal doctor at home now...lolz.
*
yea Puffy was diagnose to have demodex mites by the 2nd vet i brought him to. after his first round of antibiotics, he had an outbreak and now he is on his second round of antibiotics. i am worried that one day these stupid bacteria or fungus will overcome the antibiotics (that doesnt do much harm to his body), i will need to start giving him antibiotics that will harm his body sad.gif

so now he is on his mange medication, i hope he will be much better if this medication works.

did you find benzoyl peroxide better than malaseb? cause i think malaseb is not really working for Puffy.

its good to hear Casper skin condition is under control. i hope one day Puffy will too.
I can so relate to what you mean by being the personal doctor hahaha cause everyday when i get home after work when i am playing with thim i will check and see if got anything unusual happening on his body or not.

my next biggest problem now is tht Puffy eats his own shit and lick his own pee sleep.gif"

it's so sad to know that puffy's skin problem has not gotten better since we last chat. do you want to try bringing him to gasing veterinary hospital? we went to see dr lim chee kin before and he is very detailed and knowledgeable. call first and check if he is working, the hospital open everyday. 03 7782 3553.

hopefully puffy's condition will get better as he grows older. don't feed eukanuba because this brand is not good. their ingredients are filled with fillers and rubbishes. we feed scubby natural balance or avoderm. you can find more details here http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/

scubby is turning 1 next week! he has grown up into a very handsome boy. i have not taken any new pictures of him, but hopefully will get around to do it soon and post some up smile.gif
*
Hi Jac

yea i think i am going to consider bringing him to the gasing vet hospital, my friend who has a min. shz. recommended to me too.

i hope puffy gets better too. my first vet recommended for me to change to the lamb and rice formula first, if it doesnt work i will need to change puffy's food to fish base food. so now still experimenting which type of food will suite him better. i read from your blog on the dog food analysis and i saw the review on eukanuba before. dont think the lamb and rice is good for him cause his outbreak was bad this time

time really flies smile.gif Scubby is 1 yr old already!
hurry up post more new pictures of him, i miss looking at Scubby's pictures u post smile.gif

puffy's condition sounds so serious. i hope it doesn't turned out to be like Casper's  sad.gif

did you try asking irene kang about this? if any of her other puppies from puffy's batch suffers the same condition? actually after reading about puffy, i am also fearing that scubby might suddenly develop this if it is genetic.

i've been scubby's personal nurse since the day we brought him back. he had so much pimples on his entire body and ear infection that it took 4mths to clear. hopefully it would be the same for puffy.

oh no! why is puffy eating and licking his own business? sad.gif
*
I didnt approach Irene at all, i kinda figure that she will most probably be no help at all
i might as well just concentrate on getting Puffy better
apart from this skin issue and eating his business, he is alright

i also dont know y he is eating and licking his business. first we figured that he might be him feeling hungry thats y but i think we feed him enough
now he eats 3 big soup spoon per meal and 3 meals a day and in between we feed in a few kibbles when he is a good boy. dont think we are under feeding him.
and when we catch him eating his business, we will scold with the tone that he will know that he shouldnt be doing that.

Erm...the doctor recommended me to use Benzoyl Peroxide for Casper, but its working well for him...IMO. So i guess ur case is something similar to mine where both were diagnose to have demodex in them.

Make sure to monitor on his water consumption when giving him the antibiotics...it may cause kidney failure for consuming overdose antibiotics. Since he's still a pup, better make sure everything is alrite for him rather than suffering later.

I myself hope puffy wont get someting similar like Casper's case.
*
Yea i make sure he drinks alot of water every time after he take his medication to wash down the antibiotics
but he doesnt like to drink the water when i add in apple cider vinegar so i have to give him plain water alternate days

thanks for the advice larry ho

i also hope puffy wont have to go thru this for long and have an itch-free life

QUOTE(teaspoon.t @ Sep 3 2009, 05:01 PM)
My Ping-Ping used to eat her own pee/poo as well when she was younger…. Then I realized:-

1. I got her for a petshop… as a puppy, she thinks eat, pee.poo, sleep on the same spot is alright

2. Ping was the only doggie at that time and when I go to work, she will be home alone

3. Ping have separation anxiety

4. I gave her more treats and food… that makes her poo more… and more poo to eat

5. I used to scold or smack her bumbum when she eats her pee/poo… then she stops doing it when I am around but will do it when I go to work…. Ie doing things behind my back…

6. Then, I spoke to Ping’s trainer…. Eating pee/poo is quite common amongst bored doggies… to avoid it, once they have pee/poo (at the right spot) immediately praise them and throw them  toy (to distract them from eating the pee/poo) and clean the soiled area immediately. Beating them/scolding/shouting at your doggie after they soiled the area and going to eat the pee/poo sends them mixed messages:- In the doggie’s mind:- did I do wrong by peeing/pooing? Isn’t this is the area I am supposed to pee/poo? Remember, doggies like children are re-active creatures… ie. If I bring back the ball, I will get a treat… ie If I poo at the right spot I will get a pat/praise.

7. Train your dog with praise.

Pets are for life… they deserve the best.

Added on September 3, 2009, 5:04 pmThe crusty ear mange is quite common amongst puppies (puppies are carriers). Ping used to have them (Yes got Ping from a petshop many moons ago). Took her to the vet, Dr Hasnul and he gave her a jab and some ointment. She is alright.

This crusty ear mange is a mild form of the mange/skin problem… common amongst puppies, puppies are carriers and can spread to adult doggies. Get it treated and it will go away.

Hi May Yee

thanks for the advise smile.gif

we have been watching Puffy very closely for the pass few days.
When i am at work, he is at home with my parents and my maid so they will watch him.
So once he poop we will watch him for a while if he approaches his poo very close like to sniff we will use very stern voice to tell him no and then clean up the poo so he knows he is not suppose to eat it but sometimes when he wanders off to somewhere else for less 5 mins, i will catch him pooing and eating it T_T will continue to monitor him
I never beat Puffy ever if he does anything wrong, i only use a rolled up newspaper to scare him. heartache oh if whack him

we are treating Puffy's eaer mange now. the vet said that it is because Puffy's immune system is low which caused the demodax which leads to the bacterial infection on his body like armpits area. Did Ping ever get like bacterial infection from crusty ear mange? cause my vet said that once we treat Puffy's ear mange, the other skin diseases will go away. but honestly, i have my doubts...
