I believe the first reactions to Transformers were similar, so there you go. Although it has to be said, Cameron's left nipple itself has more talent than the whole of Bay when it comes to action movies. I'm feeling optimistic, all I want is a slam-bang smashing action extravaganza. As long as the storyline and writing is above average, I'm okay with it.

I think you are being extremely harsh. Berardinelli already gave the film glowing comments. and Ebert gave it four out of four.

The Envelope just predicted Avatar to knock Up in the Air off its perch for the race to Best Picture!

Added on December 12, 2009, 11:52 amADD: Michael Phillips gave it a thumbs up.

So far it's 4/4 among my favorite critics. Ansen is the only one without a comment. Prick!

I liked Ebert's review the most because I share the same belief regarding 3D as him about the screen dimming down but he just gave this a thumbs up regarding the 3D effects. Good news.

I cant see Bernardinelli's review. But the current crop of reviews at RT is getting to me.  biggrin.gif
Blend of live-action and CGI, mostly CGI I think. When I first saw Sigourney and Michelles Rodriguez I didn't know the movie was part live-action. I thought photorealism had been achieved then.

Btw, where is the best place to catch this in 3D? Is the IMAX screen in BTS showing it in 3D? (I know it's not under IMAX anymore)
I think Pavilion has the best GSC screens. Might watch it there.

Bernardinelli twittered his review. He was not allowed to post a review on his website until release day but he said he would twitter about it and he hinted that it will be FOUR stars and in his top 10 list of 09.

When I saw AVATAR special preview a few months ago at GSC Midvalley, staff there mentioned to me, to sit nearer to screen to get better 3D viewing. If you seat at the back, can't get the best of it. laugh.gif

AVATAR 3D isn't like those 3D popping-image-to-your-face kinda of 3D. It's totally difference experience.  nod.gif
*
I can vouch for that. Sitting nearer to the screen is better for 3D.

Please, don't let stupidity stop in the way for you to get your point across. Movies should have stopped at Metropolis or King Kong.

All this ho-ha hype..after seeing James "Avatar" sounded like stone age ppl seeing CGI for the first time.. so jakun..

C'mon wake up fella...its no longer a big deal with CGI nowaday... anything is possible in this century after the evolution of computer technologies... Thanks to George Lucas... the birth of special effects using computers which were scratch built, hand made model and background platform, the idea of using used future effects and all those idea of space ship, AT-AT walker.... all were all adapted from his idea and story, without him all just a dull movie.

The all time credit should be to George.... apparently most of the sc-fi film producer/creators were happened to evolved by George's Star Wars.

Talkin about big budget film of this century.. do not dare to compare with Star Wars... IMO in mankind history the biggest budget film ever made in human history is Star Wars and it was indeed the biggest achievement of film-making which open our mind to anything that beyond impossible is possible.

It will be a not big deal if Avatar will bag special effect award..its is nothing compare to what ILM had done with Star wars... so in conclusion AVATAR just a plain evolved CGI movie.. no big fuzz about it.

usually i dont make a big a deal about originality because it's hard to be original anymore nowadays. but the film is textbook. there's no innovation in structure and pacing. i bet if u dissect the script, u could see the three acts (setup-confrontation-resolution) divided equally and rigid.

so i just sit back and enjoy the ride. no thinking needed.
but i have to repeat: michelle rodriguez is an absolute waste.

I just came back and while I did not love it as much as Ebert (who gave it 4/4 and devoted an entire blog entry on it), I still didn't think it was a complete disappointment. Besides, I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that this movie would involve a wheelchair bound military officer (borrowing from Wolves) in an avatar and falls in love with a native and is torn between his world and hers (Pocahontas) since all this was evident from the trailer.

I can understand you being disappointed but it wasn't really that much of a problem for me. My problem with the film was the dialog and a lack of excitement from the action scenes which is a bit disappointing when you're talking about the guy who directed T2 and Aliens.

Agreed with Rodriguez: the way what happened to her was handled was cheap. But still, this is the first time I find her hot.

I agree. It's really not that great a film. A spectacle? Yes. But it's not in a league of its own.

Nope, I didn't let the hype get to me. In fact I'm still not buying that 3D is the future of movies. What this movie managed was take a step forward, but it's hard to see when the next step will occur, or what 10 steps ahead will look like.

What I truly like about the movie, is what made people like Star Wars in the first place. A simple story told extraordinarily. A world that sweeps you away and sucks you in. Movies about good vs evil like this need not be in any way complicated, it just needs to be told correctly, it just needs to nudge you into unequivocally picking the good side, it just needs you to fully get behind the main character, it just needs to make you feel like punching the air when Jake shouts "This is our land!", it just needs to make you want the main character to live and not die. And in my opinion Cameron delivers. And maybe 'just' is the wrong word I'm using, because I can't remember the last time an epic movie like this managed all that. The more I think of it the more I love it.

A second viewing will be in order. Let me see how this holds up.

It was as cringeworthy as This Is Sparta.

I've read through three opinions in this thread from people I have respect for and each one of these three mention that Cameron has created a world that sucks you in instantaneously. That I agree. But one thing, am I the only one who had the dialogue take me OUT of the film instantaneously as well? Lines like "This is our land" and "Outstanding" just takes you out of the whole fecking experience.

And the more I think about Lang and the entire corporation on Pandora, the more I feel that Cameron is insulting me. Okay, I get it! You're anti war and anti-exploitation but with lines like "shock and awe" and "preemptive strike," I feel like I'm beaten down to submission to get the message.

Also, for a movie that sucked you in, doesn't it bother you that this movie lacked proper action sequences? There just wasn't any suspense throughout the film. The only time I felt it was when Sully was eating his breakfast (you'll know what I'm talking about) and it was from then onwards, it just struck me that that sequence was the only time I grabbed the edge of my seat. Remember T2 when Arnold and Connor were chased in the prison and chased out of the arcade or in Aliens during the final fight or in T1 when Sarah Connor was limping away from the Terminator? In Avatar? Na-da.

I didn't like Star Wars but I can respect it enough. Sadly, this is the same case. I'll watch it again but chances are only to appreciate the visual and audio effects. This in HD will kick some ass. That is about it.

No, "This! Is! Sparta!" was awesome. "This is our land!" is just meh.  smile.gif

I'll probably give a point to Jake Sooly for sounding like a normal person instead of a steroid pumped freak. But his accent was another problem that took me out of Pandora. It's quasi-American. I still hope Avatar becomes a hit because I like Cameron and I enjoy his films.

Ebert just gave Avatar the Special Jury prize or it's the 11th best mainstream picture of 2009.

For the full list, head over to ebert's site.

EDIT: McGuffin!

That's the definition of a McGuffin. If you are really irritated by the lack of explanation then I can see how you could not fully enjoy the movie. Its use is absolutely not essential to the story at all. The point is, once man finds something valuable and untouched he will plunder it all by any means necessary, and especially if the enemy is technically-inferior. I'm 100% certain Cameron deliberately left it out of the movie!

It didn't bother me when I watched the movie but I still fully expect it to be explained in the sequel (if there's one).
