to properly compare box office need to adjust for inflation. ticket price have increase a lot since titanic. Gone with the wind is still the number one box office of all time if adjusted for inflation

In the old days the TV was still in the womb and people had nothing better to do than to watch GWTW like 10 times. Plus people went to theaters to get their news broadcast.

Today you not only have your blurays and dvds, but also movie piracy, so no, it's not very fair to compare.

what you all think about this thread.... g.lucas aso want to remake star wars to 3D...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/artic...s-billions.html

do you all think it can make money like avatar... hmmm...for me...i dun think so....dun do it g.lucas..... you will not able to catch humans heart......

if look back at ww box office, Star wars only gets less then 600M WW(for each movie)...just in US and canada a bit high because of their kids watch it over and over again...not for all ages especially age 25 and above....

for me, avatar going to be the fisrt movie with US2bil ww because, not only of the 3D effect, but the "story telling"(simple but beautiful)... again.... like i said... nothing more beautiful story, than a love story(that people of all ages can see except 10 years below la)...and in avatar, with new adventure on a new planet....go avatar

also need to consider last time much less people can afford to go to the movie and there is less number of movie theather arround. in the last few year the ticket price have increase quite a bit so Avatar is still far behind the number of the ticket sold compare with titanic.

it is not a good comparison but people also like to refer to list of all time box office base on the amount it earn in box office, it is very unfair to compare new movie to movie made decades ago due to ticket price.

i still prefer to see more acting than "full of CGI" effects that kinda movie..

hence, I prefer titanic so much more (coz it came with good acting, story line and emotional impact)..though both movies are of different genres tongue.gif

Quickfire is right. Who is to say few people can afford to go to movies in the past? Now you could argue, fewer people would be willing to pay this amount of money on movies and flock for pirated bootlegs and let's not forget now movies need to compete with more forms of entertainment. It's equally unfair to new movies to say that number of tickets sold should be the only barometer in judging a film's success.

China renames 'Avatar' mountain in honour of film

A Chinese mountain has reportedly been renamed in honour of the sci-fi film Avatar, after claims it had inspired scenery in the fantasy blockbuster.

The Southern Sky Column in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province, will now be known as the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain.

Local officials said photographs of the mountain had been used as the basis for Avatar's fictional world of Pandora.

Avatar has become the most popular film ever in China, making $80m (£50m) at the box office so far.

Xiaoxiang Morning News said the mountain was officially renamed at a ceremony on Monday.

The paper said a photographer from Hollywood had visited the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, the location of the mountain, in 2008.

"Many pictures he took then become prototypes for various elements in the Avatar movie, including the 'Hallelujah Mountains'," Reuters quoted the website as saying.

Avatar tours

The renaming of the mountain is one of the several attempts by Zhangjiajie to capitalise on the success of Avatar.

The municipal government website has also adopted the slogan "Pandora is far but Zhangjiajie is near", while tourists are being offered tours of the locations which allegedly inspired the film, Reuters reports.

Avatar follows the plight of the blue N'avi people as they fight to protect their land from a mining operation.

The film has been showing on 2,500 screens across China. One-third were Imax and 3D screens while the rest were regular 2D screens.

But earlier this month, China pulled 2D versions of the film from cinemas, saying they were not doing well commercially.

Critics said the move was to make way for domestic films - especially the state-backed biopic of the philosopher Confucius - and because the plot too closely mirrored forced land evictions in the country.
