NA'VI ?

"Certainly I don't want to call it Avatar 2," Cameron said at the Visual Effects Society Awards ceremony in Century City, Calif., on Sunday, where he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. "He's not an avatar anymore, is he? Maybe we'll call it Na'vi."

"I think we can see that there's a greater receptivity to it on the part of the audience than certainly the studio originally imagined," Cameron said. "We pared back on it a fair bit in the first film, and I think we can go farther in that direction and not alienate people."

NA'VI ?

what we know so far for Avatar 2 NA'VI is: Future Earth, different moons, war and spirituality (Sigourney Weaver is still alive!)

Plans for a Possible Avatar Extended Cut Theatrical Rerelease?

He’s hoping to release Avatar on 3D Blu-ray in Fall 2010 but says that might get pushed as they are considering rereleasing the film in theaters during that time. Exhibitors think they have “left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table” by moving the film out of theaters to make room for Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. “The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We’re going to assess that. We’re talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative.” Cameon has said previously that the planned DVD release will contain five or six minutes of fully finished, theatrical-release-quality deleted scenes and 15 more minutes of footage that was removed early on and thus contains rough computer generated imagery and effects.Of course, if they could get the cash to finish that footage for a rerelease, the film could include up to 21 more minutes of new footage. Sounds like a great idea to me.

a re-release could happen as early as this summer and ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE will be included!!

How MUCH additional footage? It seems that there are two likely scenarios: Adding 10 minutes of scenes (like Tsu Tey's ritual and Jake Sully proving himself to the Na'vi) that have already been through post production (just enough to still allow IMAX 3D to screen it too) *OR* adding 40 minutes of scenes that would have to be processed to be included. I am wagering for the first option but hoping for the second. Realistically though, it will be the 10 minutes. They need something extra for the S3DHD Blu-ray right? The 40 minutes will be going there more than likely.

So what do you think? How much additional footage do you think will make the summer re-release?

“It’s all right on schedule,” said Cameron. “We’ll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that’s our plan as of right now, and that’ll be pretty much bare bones. And then we’ll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime.”

On Avatar 2: The fastest we could imagine making another film is three to three and a half years, from the moment we start, and we’re not planning on starting tomorrow.

On the Avatar Special Edition Blu-ray:

You’ll be able to do a branching experience where you can select if you want to watch the basic movie, if you want to watch the movie with six minutes of footage added back in, or if you want to watch an earlier cut of the film that has 30 or 35 minutes of additional footage. It will be an unrecognizable movie. You’ll be going on a journey into a whole different version of Avatar. And some of the scenes won’t be done because we won’t have the budget to finish 20 or 30 minutes of CG stuff. We’re taking the Greatest Hits six minutes and finishing that

Avatar destroyed the previous record-holder for first-day Blu-Ray sales: The Dark Knight.

first day of release alone sold

The Dark Knight: 600,000 Blu-Ray copies
Avatar: 1.5 million Blu-Ray copies

On average, retailers have sold out 60% of their Blu-Ray inventory already, and the movie looks on track to become the top-selling title of the year.

'Avatar' sets first-day Blu-ray sales record
THR EXCLUSIVE

user posted image

Featuring a 2D version of the theatrical blockbuster for now, DVDs and Blu-ray discs of James Cameron's "Avatar" were flying off store shelves Thursday, the movie's first day in stores.

Recent market momentum for Blu-ray enthusiasm was apparent, as Blu-ray sales of "Avatar" -- at 1.5 million copies -- well outpaced first-day sales of previous high-def top dog "The Dark Knight." An early industry estimate set overall disc sales of the title comfortably north of 4 million units, putting it well on track to become the year's top-selling release to date.

Retailers sold out of 60% of their Blu-ray inventory on average, a Fox rep said. He declined to specify unit shipments.

Mass merchants moved out roughly 50% of their "Avatar" DVDs, the spokesman added.

Due to the epic's ecological theme, Fox Home Entertainment broke with the industry's Tuesday release date norm and scheduled the title's disc releases to coincide with Earth Day. Cameron and others connected to the film have been participating in a host of green-themed events as part of the movie's home-entertainment campaign.

Cameron and pic producer Jon Landau attended a symbolic tree-planting ceremony on the Fox lot Thursday.

"We're not focusing on sales," "Avatar" producer Jon Landau said. "We're focusing on the events. There were 300 kids there today. They're the future, so this is raising awareness, and that's a great thing."

A 3D version of the pic is expected to hit Blu-ray Disc early next year. Fox and the filmmakers wanted to wait until a greater number of homes were equipped with 3D Blu-ray players.

Though 3D-enabled players only recently became available, virtually all new Blu-ray players will boast that capability by year's end.

The first DVDs lack even special features of the sort typically included on disc releases. A special edition release is expected to hit stores in November and will include extensive bonus features.

"We could not have had the special material we wanted to have but will have it for the special edition," Landau said.

Despite the lean-and-mean nature of the release, Fox figures "Avatar" eventually will surpass Summit/Universal's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" as the year's best-selling disc. "New Moon" moved 4 million units in its first two days -- after launching on a Friday, at midnight -- and has sold 6.5 million copies on DVD and Blu-ray to date.

Many Best Buy locations and other retailers stayed open until midnight Wednesday to allow witching-hour early birds to flock to stores and snatch the first "Avatar" discs.

"To me, about it's never about opening day," Landau insisted. "It's, where are you after your third weekend? I think we as an industry, and as consumers, have been putting too much emphasis on opening days."

AVATAR 2 will continue several years after the events of the original. It will also lay the groundwork for the other moons in the system. Things are going to get quite "weird" to the point of becoming somewhat abstract! Each movie will stand on its own and there will definitely be NO shooting the sequels back to back. Trilogy? Actually no. The sky is no limit for this universe - the plot lines are endless.

AVATAR 2 SPOILER ALERT: This is verbatim from my source...

Official Fox Trailer For The AVATAR Re-release Online! 8 Additional Minutes Is Coming!!

This is an official trailer, verified by Fox! Check out what James Cameron has in store for us on August 27.

I have the 2D blu-ray of AVATAR but it does it no justice when compared to big screen 3D. Count me at the head of the line!

A full 8 minutes of additional footage will be included.

Personally, I will be looking for clues as to what might make it into the sequel(s). Take this screencap from the trailer for example - Jake is playing with a mobile depicting the gas giant Polyphemus and its moons (including Pandora). QUESTION: How does a bow and arrow culture know about the shape and color of their own planet? Were they taught by humans, like Grace? Interesting!

think ill just continue sticking with my 1st viewing that was watched at the cinema in 3D last year. will catch the new footage when its available online on youtube.

anyways,

On Avatar 2 and 3:

There are ideas and notes for the script, but that’s all so far. Cameron told MarketSaw;

I have an overall narrative arc for 2 and 3, and there are some modifications to that based on my experiences in the last few months from having gone down to the Amazon and actually hung out with various indigenous groups who are actually living this type of story for real…but it’s not changing the overall pattern. I haven’t gotten the script done yet; that’s going to be a ways out.

To MTV, Cameron said he was waiting on getting the deals for Avatar 2 worked out, and that once all the proper deals were in place he would write the film.

Q: So wait – does the re-release start on Earth?

A: No. The re-release opening Friday starts the same way. But in November, you can buy a box set with all the bells and whistles. It's got like 45 minutes of unfinished deleted scenes that exist in a supplement where you can just play the scenes individually.

But it's all a big negotiation with the studios; how much money do they want to spend on these sort of revisionist versions of the movie? Because on the whole Earth opening, the visual effects weren't done, and we had to go back and spend a million bucks or whatever to get those shots done. So there's a price-tag dangling from anything that gets re-inserted. It's not like "Apocalypse Now,"  where they blow up a Vietnamese  village and the footage is done – there are no visual effects after the fact. We've got to go back, and it's our time and our energy and the studio's money to re-create this stuff.

But (in November) you'll be able to watch a 16-minute-longer version of the film that's a nice, flowing, cohesive version of the movie. If you just want to wallow in "Avatar" for three hours, I can get that for you

Cover Art! AVATAR Box Set Coming November 16

Here is the cover art for the upcoming AVATAR Box Set that is scheduled to be released November 16!

user posted image

The video clip in this post includes segments from a cool documentary that will be included in the box set focusing on James Cameron's research trip to Brazil's rainforest. Sigourney Weaver and Joel David Moore accompanied him as well. Add in all the deleted scenes and additional movie footage and you have the makings of a heckuva blu-ray offering.

Have a look:

AVATAR 3D Blu-ray Coming December 1?

user posted image

Good news and bad news. Can't say whether this is authentic or not, but Blu-ray.com is reporting they have a source that says the AVATAR 3D blu-ray will be distributed starting this December 1, bundled with Panasonic 3DTVs only.

They further said that ALICE IN WONDERLAND will be available in 3D as well but bundled only with Sony 3DTVs.

I know this is going to upset people but if this is true, I don't expect we will see the phenomenon much longer as 3DTV adoption in homes is expanding rapidly. Obviously money exchanged hands to grant the TV manufacturers an exclusive window to release their respective bundles, and a domino effect may have been started with the first agreement to be signed for them to stay competitive with each other.

The sooner these agreements stop though, the better it will be for consumers. I want both titles, but not two 3DTVs.

More Details On The AVATAR Collector's Edition Blu-ray!

user posted image

Super update on the upcoming AVATAR Collector's Edition Blu-ray for you! It is not just the extended AVATAR movie you will be buying, but a heckuva lot more.

Bleedingcool (original source BBFC) has outlined the following disc details:

- Deleted Scenes - Never Before Seen: Wow - a astonishing 68 minutes and 4 seconds!
- User's Guide For Viewing Unfinished Shots: 3 minutes, 10 seconds.
- "The Night Before AVATAR": 4 minutes, 46 seconds.
- Production Shorts 1: Sculpting AVATAR, The AMP Suit, Na'vi Costumes, Speaking Na'vi and Pandora Flora. Total featurette time is ~27 minutes.
- Test Footage From BROTHER TERMITE: James Cameron was going to adapt this novel into a movie! An alien invasion story. Cameron used some performance capture in this footage and it never did get made. 2 minutes of this test footage is included.

Look for the DVD and Blu-ray AVATAR Collector's Edition to be launched November 16. The 3D Blu-ray will apparently be bundled with new Panasonic 3DTV purchases exclusively for the short term.
