Part action–adventure, part interstellar love story, the project was so ambitious that it took 10 more years before Cameron felt cinema technology had advanced to the point where Avatar was even possible.

The 280,000-square-foot studio in Playa Vista, Calif., has a curious history as a launching pad for big, risky ideas. In the 1940s, Howard Hughes used the huge wooden airplane hangar to construct the massive plywood H-4 Hercules seaplane—famously known as the Spruce Goose.

Two years ago, movie director James Cameron was in the Playa Vista studio at a crucial stage in his own big, risky project. He was viewing early footage from Avatar, the sci-fi epic he had been dreaming about since his early 20s. Cameron’s studio partner, Twentieth Century Fox, had already committed to a budget of $200 million (the final cost is reportedly closer to $300 million) on what promised to be the most technologically advanced work of cinema ever undertaken. But as Cameron looked into his computer monitor, he knew something had gone terribly wrong.... icon_idea.gif

so i guess ppl should stop making movies after star wars

Since the cgi/effects/action can never beat star wars already.

Anyway, please dont bring ur stupidity here also, its degrading us active music & movies subforum members.

Here are some Twitter reactions on AVATAR:

@petershall: “The AVATAR buzz is an understatement. That movie was unbelievable.”

@chasewhale: “Just finished AVATAR. Special effects were top notch. The movie ran a little long for my likings but I liked it!”

@comingsoonnet” “Okay, about Avatar?…. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Unbelievable… amazing.”

@MikePereira21: Was blown away by Avatar! For 150 minutes, I was a kid again. Thank you James Cameron! BTW, the groundbreaking 3D was mindblowing.”

@rejects: “I’m not supposed to talk about Avatar… That said, it was a spectacular experience. Like nothing I’ve seen before.”

@markwalters74: “Just saw AVATAR. Not allowed to talk about it yet. Not allowed to say how it’s an amazing visual feast, or that Jimmy C’s still got the gift.”

@dmann11: “Holy effing crap!!! Avatar was FREAKING AWESOME KICK ASS SWEET!!!!!”

@TheGate: “For the record ‘Avatar’ was worth the $400 million, and no it is not even remotely “vomit inducing”.

All this ho-ha hype..after seeing James "Avatar" sounded like stone age ppl seeing CGI for the first time.. so jakun..

C'mon wake up fella...its no longer a big deal with CGI nowaday... anything is possible in this century after the evolution of computer technologies... Thanks to George Lucas... the birth of special effects using computers which were scratch built, hand made model and background platform, the idea of using used future effects and all those idea of space ship, AT-AT walker.... all were all adapted from his idea and story, without him all just a dull movie.

The all time credit should be to George.... apparently most of the sc-fi film producer/creators were happened to evolved by George's Star Wars.

Talkin about big budget film of this century.. do not dare to compare with Star Wars... IMO in mankind history the biggest budget film ever made in human history is Star Wars and it was indeed the biggest achievement of film-making which open our mind to anything that beyond impossible is possible.

It will be a not big deal if Avatar will bag special effect award..its is nothing compare to what ILM had done with Star wars... so in conclusion AVATAR just a plain evolved CGI movie.. no big fuzz about it.

you do realise that star wars is an overhyped piece of crap, only reason its so famous is because it blew minds when it came out back in the stone age what with its old man with magic light stick :OOOOOOOOOOOOO and girl with weird hairstyle "ZOMG SO FOOTOOORISTIC!!!!! " and lets be honest eih, episode 1 2 and 3 were pure crapola.

and everyone knows that Avatar is basically pocahontas + dances with wolves + all the weaponry one can find in a vid game today, what makes it amazing is not the storyline, but the packaging, a run of the mill(but of course awesome) story presented in all the splendor CG has to offer, and lets not forget, probably the awesomemmest movie to be presented in 3D.

so yeah, appreciated it for what it is, not what it isnt. k.
