@fastreader

allocate budget around 200-300, then go get a light-mid action 6 and 1/2 feet rod pair it with a 2000/3000 series reels...

get yourself some size no 4~7 hooks.
sinker size no 5~9
line... ermm 8lbs to 20lbs mono

other stuff u need such as cutter, pen knife, float and etc ..

btw i strongly suggest you to try out pay pond instead of river.. it's dangerous man ! just like what sifu Q say ... river current is damn strong ... don't play play man.. enjoy fishing but then don't put your life on risk ok ? tongue.gif

wanna ask lah...is a float necessary?..i mean for beginner like me...

i tink i will fishing fr the bridge..so shud b quite safe..anyway,wat is the float for?..to see if the fish bite ur bait is it?..
*
depends on situation and species targeted... smile.gif

for example -
a) places with loads of sangkut .. float can be deploy to minimize the potential of line snag.
b) use to present live prawn for surface dwellers such as siakap and etc...

QUOTE(Shoot@M3 @ Jun 2 2011, 12:02 PM)
Hi all, I'm from KK, Sabah and I'm quite new into fishing
I guess mostly to take away the tension and pressure from work life! That's how i started fishing

I've still yet to learn all the terms in fishimonology, but i guess I'm doing bottom fishing now at my place in Sabah. I wonder whether got any anglers here in Sabah as I need some guidance in this. The best way to learn is from some other anglers and me and my friends are yet to find few. Of course we do ask for advice from other ppl who are fishing, but not all are willing to share it.

We recently been trying to find good spots to fish but end up in a place call Anjung Gayang near the road to Tuaran here. Entry Fee is RM3 (small pelantar jetty), RM5 (middle of the bridge) and RM10 (Floating boat-without an engine! just got anchor LOL)

I think this Saturday we will try go into the floating boat and go to the middle of the river. The river is a mixture of saltwater going into the interior so our place would mostly be saltwater fish.

I myself bought a fishing rod on promotion from local supermarket here. Feels like the reels is not that good now that I've tested it. Of course, I wouldn't want to spend too much just in case I would not be doing it often. But so far we have been going fishing almost every weekend and holidays that we get and I think it's time to get some advice here on what fishing rod and reels are recommended. I tried to ask this in a local Sabah forum but didn't get much replies or even activities there, so if got any anglers here from Sabah, do pm me if you would like to organise some trips around here in KK or other places smile.gif

I'm now looking to get a casting rod and also maybe to use as bottom fishing. Can anyone recommend me which one should I get? Things are quite hard to get in Sabah I would say (that's for the IT and other stuff), so probably let me know how to choose as well for the rod and reel?
I'm not that tall so probably something not that too long around 5.5 feet can suffice?

Plus need to know the shops recommended here and places to fish. I would like to try freshwater fishing but I don't know where to start. If anyone can give advice on this, please please do so smile.gif

Ps: I still learning what kind of fish i get last few times but Ketambak, Kerapu, and one named 'sam pan tiao' in chinese which i duno what's its called in malay... lol
*
bro,

casting n bottom both were totally different type of game biggrin.gif

For sea bottom i can give some advice.. usually we use damn big and heavy sinker.. eg number ranging from 12 to 32 depending on the current. Fyi size 32 were about 1 kg ++ in weight. You'll need a multiplier reel loaded with 65lb ~80lbs braid line and a rod with the rating of 10kg ~24kg. Total cost should around 1.5k-2k for a good reel and rod setup including etc accessories such as sinker, hooks, spreader, wire line, and etc etc. Oh yah do not settle down with those cheap kai chap tomman stuff.. you'll regret and keep on upgrading. Allocated 2k budget and get a reel and rod with quality such as shimano or daiwa !

bottom rod setup, a typical bottom rod length ranging from 5.6 ~ 6 feet.
bottom multiplier reel recommendation, shimano = torium, talica, tiagra or trinidad II. For Daiwa = saltist, saltiga or sealine

casting tarak sure, u can ask other sifu here.

san pan tiao should be talang in malay, in english.. queen fish if i remember correctly, very poisonous fish, consume with caution as these fish were highly toxic .. it may cause rashes all over the body if your body can't take it. Usually kampung ppl dried it to make "ham yu" biggrin.gif

dunno what to bring yet.. this coming trip is my 1st trip to BSR... will consult my sifu... haha.. maybe popping rod or buy at 7seas.. tongue.gif
*
hmmm better dont use braid at BSR, I been there for 3 time using 6.6ft cheap kai jigging rod + daiwa freamj 4500 loaded with 40lbs braid.
It's hard to fish with braid there and 25-30lbs mono work best according to kun thais. To fully enjoy your BSR trip.. you should hire a guide biggrin.gif because only thais know the right mixture of "lum" [a kind of powdery stuff] or "lompang" [bread]

btw, how's freamj compared to phantom j? or compare with shimano aceration??
*
not really in to spinning reel so cant comment much... as I only had 1x freamj, 1x shimano elf and follow by my multiplier type reels such as talica, tiagra, saltist and torium biggrin.gif

areeee youu shuureee? looks abit unsafety to me only.
my protocol is play safe..25-30lbs sure very syiok? u fight a mekong like weight over 40lbs like wad? 30mins? lucky enuff if u kena 1 big jackpot.but u die die scare of the mono putus.those feelings is like u farking wanna pump fish the fish back to your direction but u scare hardcore actions collide ended up string putus  sweat.gif
just my 2cents
*
I'm damn sure biggrin.gif
the thai fella which i get to know teach us "farang" how to fish at BSR, he teach us how to mix bait and show us the correct way to fish at bsr. He die die also say 20lbs is more then enough to play with. I even saw him hooked up a 40~50kg plabuk with 25lbs mono biggrin.gif
well unless u kena those giant carp lar then different story ... most prolly u'll need 80lbs line pair with tiagra 20 + IGFA 24kg rated bottom rod to turn their bloody head biggrin.gif

10-20kg no need 30 min fight la, they are powederful for the first 2-3 run only, line strip kau kau then they start to wear down, most likely about 10-15 min only can land liou.
