suggestion,
get a 8 or 15Kg rod, this one can cover strait of malacca without much hiccup. try find daiwa stp 8kg or shimano 15kg backbone. cheap and cheerful

reel, get a diuwa or shimano reel. any way i'll recommend a shimano torium 30 (6.2:1) load it with 65lbs or 80lbs berkley whiplash braided line. if budget allow got get a torsa

so the damage would be...

reel rm600~700 ++ (shimano torium 30)
Drag mod RM50 . Carbontex drag set. Highly recommended if you whack bottom alot. Ori dartanium drag wont last 1 year if you frequent go bottom bashing.
rod rm250-400.++ (daiwa stp 8kg or 10kg, shimano backbone 15kg) more budget ? then can try get shimano triton boat which is approx RM1K
accessories such as line spreader, hooks, wire line and etc junk= RM100
sinker, dumbell,chuntoi : rm 100-150 (size 10,12,14,16,18,20,24,32) one set. But most likely you'll need 2 set in case u go ship wreck often.

rm500 wont get u anywhere, a good usable entry level reel cost over 600 ++ without line. Malacca strait only about 50~90 meter ler mana lu mau carik 100m ?

gua load 500m just incase the line kena sangkut/snap. one more thing is.. it's wise to spend more on reel or i'll guarantee u'll cry/regret and curse like no tomorrow when u crank during strong current. Get a reels from reputable manufacturer such as abu,daiwa,shimano to save ur headache as for american reels .. forget about those junk lar.

Yeash we do prefer multiplier aka round reel for bottom fishing, preferably without any line guide.

Btw Calcutta is a cute reel not for bottom hehehe because it's drag power is not up to the standard to crank a no18 sinker... if you kena a 4 kg angjoh on a no18-20 sinker with the depth about 50m... u can say bye bye to the fish and calcutta. You might also end up in hospital for some serious injuries on ur fingers while trying to stop the non stop line peel and your reel might end up with a broken anti reverse claw, anti reverse bearing or a screw up main gear and pinion gear

i'm using ang cho as reference only, i still haven't use GT as reference. I think we let sifu Q speak about the feel ler especially for those over 10kg mia GT

Actually i had recommended torium on the earlier page hehehe anyway few more pop up on my mind.

shimano tekota 700 or 800,
shimano torium 30 or 40,
daiwa saltist 40 or 50
shimano tld 15 or 20,
abu BigGame 10k auto 2speed ... i doubt u'll find this hehee ( my sifu weapon of choice)

all these reels range from 600-900. Pick your poison. Try not to settle down for something like cap ayam brand reels or something which is not meant for bottom such as calcutta . I believe most of us here learn our lesson via the hardway, just dont follow our path where our store room stock pile tons of junk reels and rods:lol: allocate more budget and get those with quality, don't la settle with those tomman, tica, seahawk and etc ....

kena a 4-5kg angcho on no18 sinker during strong current... can die la wei... non stop line peel use about 20min to get the bugger up !
if kena "sagai,ebek,stingray" lagi die kau kau when current is strong

hehehe duno mana, tekong bring us to few spot ler. hehee as for Peen.. i tried b4 those old skool mia... bulky, heavy.. tarak ngam my taste.

hehee i'm not picky when it comes to leader... anything 50~60lbs and soft, gua sapu mia .. RM 1.5~2 per pack

hehe those mono leader ain't so tough if a barracuda whack the bait.... the mono leader sure clean cut mia, 80lbs also condemn
anyway adding a 30-40lbs wire line would prevent it

aiyo gua use about 7-8inch of wire trace only den sambung with mono... anyway ini macam mia method usually use for bottom ler hehehe
