Professor Hugh McGavock warned that antibiotics could become useless within 12 years. This is because common diseases now treatable (1)by the drugs Would become killers. He said (2)even gross over-prescribing by doctors threatened to make (3)infectious bacteria resistant to all forms of antibiotics. (4)Each superbug resists almost all antibiotics and there (5)are indications that even vancomycin- until now the (6)active drug of last resort- is unable to (7)outdo it. The crisis could assume the same (8)scale as the AIDS epidemic. Professor McGavock said many (9)drugs once heralded as the greatest discovery in (10)modern medicine-were now useless because they had (11)been overused by doctors and livestock farmers.
