Observers suggested that GTA IV's release could hurt the box office result of Iron Man...below is the results and conclusion..

RESULTS:

user posted image
GTA IV

GTA IV has already become the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment by grossing $500 million in its first week worldwide...a gross that outgrossed atleast the top 30 of the American box office last week. It had also received a perfect 10 from both Gamespot and IGN which is no joking matter since both sites had never given that score for about a decade......IGN(almost nine years) and Gamespot(almost seven years).............

The score that I'm waiting for is from Famitsu, a 40/40 will make it the first game outside of Japan to do so....the game will probably sells really well there too...

IRON MAN

Iron Man did quite well also....it had received strong response from critics and had grossed about $250 million worldwide....It seems that almost everyone like the movie(especially fans) and Robert Dowbey Jr as Tony Spark/Iron Man is nothing less short than superb.....the video game version do sucks though, if according to reviews....

It be interesting to see how many sequels will be stared by Robert since he is already above 40 and still aging......didn't effect any of the James Bond movie if you think about it

CONCLUSION:

In this case it is a win-win situation since both of them did incredibly well...GTA 4 is an overwhelmingly strong GAME OF THE YEAR candidate and that greatest game of all time rating at Game Rankings plus that biggest launch of all time record would make every gamer proud(almost)....it might as well be the best selling game of the year and maybe ever and one of the best game of all time if not the best....

For Iron Man, the movie could gross above $700 milion and may become one of the best comic book adaption/superhero film of all time....

MOVIES VS GAMES

Well, as long as a movie is strongly marketed and well received, the movie industry had nothing to worry about(now).....since gamers are willing to give up two hours or so of their playing time to watch their favourite movies....however, if a movie is poorly marketed and/or received, it gonna wet on its own pants..............................

The Iron-man game is basically a contender for worst game of the year 2008.

GTA4, contender for GOTY 2008(although I don't think so quite honestly).

things that you want to compare, must have several similar attributes. for movies, the only thing that I can think of in terms of its similarities is gross sales...other than that..they are completely on a different world. is this your first GTA game?

it's like this actually....right now it's the movie industry that is the most popular form of entertainment.....but as a gamer, of course I want the gaming industry to be just as huge....

Console/PC games and movies fall under entertainment category. The comparison is about the form/medium of entertainment that the entertainment industry is seriously looking into both forms/media. They also invest a lot of money for both media (licensing.)

how the heck do u port a video game versus a movie? for crying out loud both are different in a lot of ways. it's like comparing between an orange and a ball. the only resemblance between these two is they're script based.

It is comparing two different forms of entertainment. Is the gaming industry as an entertainment as big as the movie industry?

Is the gaming industry big enough to be considered a serious threat to the movie industry?

Is there synergistic values between these two industries or are they competing?

These are issues and topics that have been raised before so it is not new. The comparison between the two is simple. Gross value.

A game that releases grossed 500 mil worldwide and a blockbuster gets released grossed 250mil. So, is the gaming industry big enough yet?

The answer is probably a resounding yes.

Actually, the comparison is made to show how far gaming has come as a form of entertainment.

It is mainstream now, no longer an alternative.

But do note that this comparison is unfair to movies because one game sold here in Malaysia is probably equivalent to what? 16 movie tickets?

I don't think some of us here are taking the comparison in a wrong way. It is not meant to say GTAIV is better than Iron Man (the movie). It is meant to signal the arrival of gaming as a mainstream entertainment player.

in terms of grossing, the gaming industry is an almost equal to the movie industry(still far from titanic & LOTR though)........but we still pale in comparison in terms of demographic...

Also, the newspapers were reporting that the higher ups in Hollywood were worried that the release of GTAIV would eat into the profits of Iron Man, which opened on the same week.

This has proven to be false, seeing how much money the two products have been making.

wow, this is what I want, intelligent conversation about gaming........yes, games aren't cheap but the technology surpassed the market....this problem should be solved when the market get 10% of china/india or both

True, not to mention movies have an easier entry level because all you need to do is get to a cinema and buy a ticket.

Whereas for gaming right now, to get into it, you probably need to invest a certain amount before buying a game. I don't think there will be a time when movies and games will be fighting for the share of mind.

I, for one, will still play games and watch movies.

The movie will only be threatened when the day finally arrive where users can star in their own PORN/ACTION/LOVE movie via an immersive interactive platform and the tech is largely available to the masses. (Like the one they have in A.I movie)

By that time movie and the game producer will work more closely together where users have a choice of a simple linear experience or go for the special edition version of the movie where they themselves can star in the movie they chose.

So the term will no longer be, 'have you watched Iron Man?' Instead it will be 'have you experienced Iron Man?'

Wo, what a cool idea(except for the porn)..I will go for a project that combine the movie, gaming, and music alltogether......I mean artist can work on the sound and music......directors can work on the visual and storyline....while the designers can work on the technology and gameplay....I think it will be less expensive to make, since they combine their sources, but off course they have to learn to work together........
