how the heck do u port a video game versus a movie? for crying out loud both are different in a lot of ways. it's like comparing between an orange and a ball. the only resemblance between these two is they're script based.

It is comparing two different forms of entertainment. Is the gaming industry as an entertainment as big as the movie industry?

Is the gaming industry big enough to be considered a serious threat to the movie industry?

Is there synergistic values between these two industries or are they competing?

These are issues and topics that have been raised before so it is not new. The comparison between the two is simple. Gross value.

A game that releases grossed 500 mil worldwide and a blockbuster gets released grossed 250mil. So, is the gaming industry big enough yet?

The answer is probably a resounding yes.

i think it's not fair to compare these two

we compare wif GTA4.....

well at least it's more logic than comparing between a game and a movie.

Actually, the comparison is made to show how far gaming has come as a form of entertainment.

It is mainstream now, no longer an alternative.

But do note that this comparison is unfair to movies because one game sold here in Malaysia is probably equivalent to what? 16 movie tickets?

I don't think some of us here are taking the comparison in a wrong way. It is not meant to say GTAIV is better than Iron Man (the movie). It is meant to signal the arrival of gaming as a mainstream entertainment player.

in terms of grossing, the gaming industry is an almost equal to the movie industry(still far from titanic & LOTR though)........but we still pale in comparison in terms of demographic...

Also, the newspapers were reporting that the higher ups in Hollywood were worried that the release of GTAIV would eat into the profits of Iron Man, which opened on the same week.

This has proven to be false, seeing how much money the two products have been making.

wow, this is what I want, intelligent conversation about gaming........yes, games aren't cheap but the technology surpassed the market....this problem should be solved when the market get 10% of china/india or both

True, not to mention movies have an easier entry level because all you need to do is get to a cinema and buy a ticket.

Whereas for gaming right now, to get into it, you probably need to invest a certain amount before buying a game. I don't think there will be a time when movies and games will be fighting for the share of mind.

I, for one, will still play games and watch movies.

The movie will only be threatened when the day finally arrive where users can star in their own PORN/ACTION/LOVE movie via an immersive interactive platform and the tech is largely available to the masses. (Like the one they have in A.I movie)

By that time movie and the game producer will work more closely together where users have a choice of a simple linear experience or go for the special edition version of the movie where they themselves can star in the movie they chose.

So the term will no longer be, 'have you watched Iron Man?' Instead it will be 'have you experienced Iron Man?'

Wo, what a cool idea(except for the porn)..I will go for a project that combine the movie, gaming, and music alltogether......I mean artist can work on the sound and music......directors can work on the visual and storyline....while the designers can work on the technology and gameplay....I think it will be less expensive to make, since they combine their sources, but off course they have to learn to work together........
