Many people told me that I am too old to learn violin. Is 19 years old is too old?
Is there such thing as too old to learn?

no its not too old.
however, at this age where you'll be busy with college and all, you do need to be very disciplined to put time aside to practice. |

Yes you are too old, you should be married 3 years ago.Just kidding. No lah, the question you should ask is not if you're too old. It should be if you're passionate enough and know how to set a proper timetable to accommodate the lessons ? |

hey i started to play guitar on 19 too.
there is no such thing as 'too old to play instrument' we play for our own pleasure right?? dont listen to negative comment like that. just learn it with a good sifu and in correct way... then, shred on your violin in front of them! |

generally people learn slower as they get older. And most of them give up because of frustration and lack of progress. Hence the myth "too old to learn".

QUOTE(toccatina @ May 13 2008, 07:22 PM) I don't know about you, but some of the piano players I know can't stand the guitar.Too painful and they give up too easily. Learning piano helps you with your foundation/music theory, but the problem is when you start learning other instruments, you start comparing and found the piano much easier and then you give up easily. I never learned the piano and never had to compare so to me, guitaring isn't that hard but since I am just learning for fun, I have no pressure to improve/ace by a certain time/age. The problem with some musicians is they set a pace where they MUST ace the exam, where learning no longer becomes fun, but a CHORE just because of the certificate/exam. As for those of us who learn a musical instrument out of interest and fun/joy, ignoring exams and such, we tend to find it easier to pickup and no pressure at all. In the end, i think those who learn out of genuine interest and not rushing to pass exams might improve and find it a joy. Learning to play a musical instrument should be an enjoyable process. But when you combine it with an exam to ace and get certificate by a certain period (usually not your own pace) it becomes a chore and that's why many kids give up music after they grow up. |

You only have yourself to blame for being greedy and not able to plan properly.im wondering something, is elec violin share the same things as guitar? as in amp and effect pedal such Why lah you go learn both violin and guitar at the same time ? You are messing with your finger and brain muscle development like that. Learn one at a time lah. It's not difficult to squeeze 1 hour a day for practice. Don't waste time yumchar with friends. During weekends lagi manyak time, spend 6 hours a day on either Sat or Sunday. Planning, planning, planning! Discipline! |

QUOTE(toccatina @ May 14 2008, 12:54 AM) Preferably not because I believe the muscles are flexed/trained differently but there's no law that says you can't.What I recommend is if you wanna learn both, do it at the same time, or alternate.. this way the muscles can accomodate and not neglect the other. Jikolo's way, as you've seen, is to play violin 1 month, and then ignoring the guitar for the whole month.. like that sure cannot improve lah. Maybe you can alternate odd/even days. As for levels/grades, jeeeez.z. does it matter ?!!! Just have fun! Don't bother with the exams or anything. When you can play the song you wanted to play then you've levelled up already. *LOL* You worry about the exam only when you wanna join some snobby orchestra or something. :-P |

IMO, there is no such thing as 'too old to learn'...
it's all about passion... Without passion, how young u also can't learn... with passion, how old u also be able to learn... It depends on how passionate r u to learn something... just dun give up easily... no one knows how to run before learning how to walk... hope it helps... |

I self-learn piano just a few months ago via online tutorial (youtube) and able to play certain songs. I took some time off during studying at my dorm to practice at the college's wreck piano (I heard that no one tune the poor thing for years... cheap admin)
It take me some problem in using my left hand though but then usually the songs use left hands for repetitions anyway. Im relearning music theory since I left hanging since I was in standard 5.. haha... Piano doesn't need to learn about everything to learn how to play a song. If you know the song by heart, and know what keys to press, (if you like backward learning) you could understand the music sheet much than starting to learn how to play "Twinkle2 little stars" heck... university is for learning new skills right.. yep yep... |

QUOTE(toccatina @ May 13 2008, 07:09 PM) if know how to read all the notes then it will be little bit simple for u.i learn violin when i'm 10 but after 6 yrs i stoped learning d. lol coz abit busy n lazy to practise. So if u r 20, i think u r quite busy wit ur uni stuff. If u can still manage ur time well, practise at least 30mins per day i'm sure u can still learn it. |
