Hey guys smile.gif

After reading a thread in another forum (UK-based), I found out its OK to be a credit card tart (jump from one card to another, balance transfer within 0% and go somewhere else when the period expires). Any good promotions lately for 0% balance transfer without any 'processing fee' ? biggrin.gif

Usually 0% balance transfer is promotional based and time limited. Year long balance transfer seldom offers 0%.

Of course biggrin.gif

But in case there are, why not smile.gif

Hey affin is kinda cool.. With 0% for 12 months, am looking for the nitty gritty details such as annual fee (free) and approval fee(havent found...)

They do have "Early Settlement Fee of RM250"... means I have to stretch the balance to 12 months ?

@b00n
Thanks for the calculation. I appreciate it biggrin.gif. The debt is approx 2x of our salary, so we're thinking of putting it aside first without letting it grow 1.5% month. A 6 months 0% would be perfect - just need to find a bank that provides that biggrin.gif

Question.

If I'm a new cardholder with no history whatsoever, how does the new rulings affect me? I'm expecting the worst scenario - 18%p.a that starts charging interest the next day right after transaction being recorded.

that's not a surprise considering the fact that Citigroup is in real bad shape now. Malaysia has a lower default rate compared to America - they know that we really put our loans as priority.. hence the offer.

especially if you've been paying ur cards in full every month. prime candidate for personal loan whistling.gif

I think people who work overseas, send money home for family and come back to retire is more patriotic than people who dont pay a single sen on their ptptn loan, dont pay income tax and retire in debt.

Back to cc biggrin.gif

With no 20 days interest free period, am thinking of getting a charge card instead. What are my options I wonder.

AFAIK, the 'invisible' limit is higher compared to credit cards. But MBB Amex is not what I'm interested in.

Look for Charge Card-i here :
http://www.alrajhibank.com.my/

Benefits :
- 55 days no charge/interest
- Islamic takaful (if u die then no need to pay)
- it's a VISA! (widely acceptable)
- RM10 per withdrawal at ATM overseas / local icon_idea.gif thumbup.gif

Cons :
- no points?
- RM70 yearly fee
- Takaful is not free biggrin.gif

I think with the new ruling, TPs are only good if you pay the amount in full EVERY month. Hmm time to clear out some debts smile.gif

IMHO the best TP value is still Maybank's. But then they dont waive the annual fees and no petrol rebate

QUOTE(hye @ Jun 25 2008, 10:45 PM)
A few more notes to this card. It's a fully Syariah compliant card, means that there's a possibility that the bank may reject the transaction should it is used in a non-syariah compliant venue/merchant. (e.g Maybe you can't use this card at your KTV when entertaining clients) I remember someone telling me this information several years back which is the characteristic of the Al-Taslif card (AMBank)

The longer no interest period was one of the main attraction. (I inquired out of curiosity) In fact one of my friend who owns a Bank Islam credit card mentions that his outstanding amount (if he pays before/on the due date), the bank will reward him with a discount on the profit rate (this is what they term the interest under the syariah concept) in the next bill. I'm not sure on the rate of the discount though. I'm surprised when I heard this.  notworthy.gif

Unfortunately, this is one of the few banks/cc which is not heavily promoted. (I'm not affiliated with the bank  smile.gif  )
*
hye,

I'm a muslim so KTV is out of the picture wink.gif I plan to pay off full amount every month but am expecting a hiccup or two cause I'm getting married really soon. That's why I found the 55 days profit free period is so attractive.

I found that heavily-promoted cards tend to hv crappy benefits (hence the heavy promotion brows.gif). In the mean time am gonna upgrade my Maybankcard to Visa Debit thumbup.gif

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!  rclxms.gif Well, everyone have their own preferences on the cc they use. Probably I think your preference will change over time as and when you are able to get access to better cards. (e.g Classic -> Gold -> Platinum) Probably this won't be applicable for you as your main preference seems to have access to longer "no interest" period. This narrows down the available choices dramatically.  nod.gif

Auw thanks blush.gif . I plan to be a credit card tart (no loyalty, chasing 0% balance transfers whistling.gif) so 14% or 18% doesnt matter to me in the future cause I'll make sure to pay full every month..... except for these coming 6 months tongue.gif.

I just realized that I dont meet the RM3000/month salary requirement laugh.gif

If U haf an existing credit card, use that as ur base to apply for this 2nd credit card.

If U don't haf an existing credit card, just apply for anyone that U qualify and use that to apply for this 2nd one biggrin.gif

I hv an existing supp card given by fiance blush.gif . Whenever I fuel up at Shell and being approached by cc salesppl , I had to tell them I'm not qualified cause I hv no payslip biggrin.gif . Well for now at least smile.gif

Don't feel bad ... I applaud you for being realistic/honest in your financial management.  rclxms.gif Some people are not and it's worrying if they think cc's are a easy mean to get access to funds quickly. Not realizing and the potential damage that cc debt to one person is very worrying. I've many friends who are like that and they spend months and some years to clear (if they can) their cc debts. The best part is that they get into this mess within 1-3 months of using cc.
*
I realized that credit card is the cheapest (0% interest for 20 days) and the most expensive (18% p.a) way to borrow cash. I love money too much really to be spending them unnecessarily. And I wanna be a millionaire before 35 and retire at 40, so gotta watch my money now wink.gif

We're about to cancel our HSBC card due to crappy points value whistling.gif. Thinking of supp-ing his MBB gold. There are actually a couple of things to think about. Sharing of credit limit, my unability to pay MY expenses through my MBB own account and higher annual fee. Decisions decisions.

No lah I'm just not a big fan of spending bf's money. What if the relationship doesnt work out? And spending his money is only fun if he's rich. I manage his finances so I know exactly how much money he has - not much sad.gif I brainwash myself by saying "To earn RMx amount of money he had to bust his ass off for x hours. Is the purchase even worth it?" blush.gif

I agree that the HSBC is rather "calculative" in terms on points value but they make this up tremendously via their outstanding CS. Well everyone here would agree on this notion at least.

- If you are worried about the higher annual fees for now, may I suggest (this require some discipline) that he pays for everything via his card for now and you can split the bill later when the bill arrives.
- Postpone getting your own card till maybe 6 months down the road where you probably would have settled down better. Probably your initial card could be the CIMB Petronas card which is Free for Life (FOL). I hope the petrol station crisis would be over by then. This would provide you with the necessary financial independence I think. (Again ... I think you would have thought of this better)
Well ... I wish I have a GF with your virtues.  tongue.gif

The HSBC annual fee is due in August. What do you reckon? Calling them for a waiver? brows.gif Right now getting a credit card is a necessary evil I guess. But you're right - I'll only get one after I hv my own stable job smile.gif

I hv to be calculative cause he trusts me a lot - gotten me an Amex supp when he first got his job that barely qualified him for the card. Again, with great power comes great responsibilities tongue.gif

QUOTE(tinkerbel @ Jun 26 2008, 10:23 AM)
@Syd G,
Make sure U keep track of all expenses made; do not make any U cannot afford to pay when the bill comes. Ie: set aside $ for each purchase - that way U don't have to worry about not having sufficient $ to pay

Some banks do offer waivers for supp card holders if the card isn't dormant and is in use.  Alternatively, go with hye's suggestion.
*
Thanks. Will keep that in mind smile.gif

Karaoke joints fall under the 'grey list' I guess. So does 'I Need House' or Laundry bar.
