Is it true that when interest rate rise, bond value will fall?
So it is suitable to buy up bond during this period?

Index fund is an equity fund.
Index fund purpose is to mimick the performance of index, aka buying index linked stocks.

Yes, theorectically.

If bond yield is 3%
while FD is 3%, it makes no sense to invest in bond.

So bond price must go down so that it has higher yield that FD.

But some bonds are start with higher yield in the first place, so if interest rate rise is not significant, bond price may just stagnant.

There is a similar new fund from Public Mutual called PSGEF - Public Singapore Equity Fund to be offered from June 07 to June 27, 2011. You may consider this new fund, similar to PB Singapore Advantage-30 Equity Fund. Offers at NAV RM0.25. In fact, the PB Singapore Ad 30 is already in positive side for those who invest since commencement at last year 2010 May 11.

interest rate movement has more impact on goverment bond than corporate bond/ investment grade bond. As FD and government bond are considered good substituition, as they have low risk or no risk. Fd is protected by PIDM and government can raise tax to pay bond dividend.

Often, interest rate is an indicator for economic performance, BNM use interest rate as part of their monetary policy to control the economic performance. During the economic turmoil in 2008, BNM fixed the interest rate at historical low to spur the economy, so when economy picking up, BNM increase the interest rate to slow down the heat. When interest rise gradually from bottom, means corporates are doing well, so it is more likely for corporate to pay dividend to their investors on time and default risk will be lesser (bond holder has priority claims on dividend compared to common stock holders) , as a result bond demand will be higher and bond price will also increase despite the rise in interest rate.

To conclude, interest rate has inverse correlation with govt bond return, but not neccesary for corporate/private bonds. For low risk investors, bond is a good diversified instrument for both good time and bad time.

Structured or 'Protected' funds is one of the worse investment ever invented. Basically what they do is they put ~90% of the money you have invested in a negotiated instrument of deposit with the bank (like long term FD) and then take the remaining ~10% and gamble in the market, making very risky bets (warrants, swaps etc). The amount invested in the FD like instrument depends on the current interest rate. Afterwards there will be two outcome.

Scenario A : The punting of your 10% is successful and they gain some earnings, coupled with the money from the 90% kept in FD you may get between 10%-20% earnings over 3 years period. Somewhat better than FD... rolleyes.gif

Scenario B : Lets say the punting of 10% of your capital is not successful and lost it all. The 90% kept in FD will have interest earned over the 3 years lets say about 10%. So in the end you earn nothing, and this is the so call 'capital protection'. dry.gif

And in the mean time the sneaky bankers will take management fees from the fund, even though they just put 90% of the money in a NID or long term FD deposit. Expect about 3-4% taken off as fee's over the 3 year period. The rest they gamble blindly. doh.gif

Worth it or not? You decide. laugh.gif

Wow... Very good info! To be honest,I never invest in stock or fund before. As usual, I will put part of my salary as FD only. Now finding alternative to get extra pocket money.

Maybe, for starters, it's good to focus on PLANTING SEEDS of growth, not just focusing on extra pocket money tongue.gif
Some ppl focus on extra pocket money and eats all the fruits of their growth tree, without replanting the fruits' seeds. brows.gif
