From what i read the first generation Starcraft players from Korea are like that. That was when Starcraft was not a mainstream thing in South Korea.

If i'm one of the big company, why should i invest my money for bunch of geeks playing video games?
The game must have some spectators value, or any other value that can benefit the sponsors.

Legalize E-Game Betting? Are you crazy? Do you not know your own country's law?

yea Betting is very lame.....

Lets see, for ESWC, if bookie take bets, they will obviously go for the stronger team example...1st round Kingsurf vs 'unknown' << Betting on kingsurf will make your day and even make u richer for the whole tourney if u keep on betting on kingsuft!!!!! cause they are strongest team in malaysia atm. Well esports are not like sports where underdogs can win big team...so betting on esports never gonna happen. You hardly can see kingsurf beaten by an unknown team unless its match fixed.k thx bye

i said dedicated gamer cuz he wrote a long post...and about e-games betting I just folo what i read from newspaper. A local football coach asked for a legalization for football betting so its will prevent match fixed..and currently for mym pride tourney u can bet... thou Im just joking but with betting more money will come in.. but hey...judi adalah haram di sisi undang2..

Zenith got sponsored...and how i look at them also..they like bunch of kids(geeks)..its the consistency that matters. KS is doing well now..and they got sponsored as well..if not mistaken

it doesnt have to be a win lose bet there are many other ways like number of kills the unknown team can get or the number of towers they take down.

in malaysia the are only a few places that were allowed for betting such as genting, horse race and those sports toto (all those numbers betting, sorry i dun know much bout betting). To legalise betting for esports require a lot of effort but seriously i doubt that government will allow it since games is played by everyone including muslim. Just like soccer, that why they wont legalise soccer betting.

agreed with king_kong... more whiners than winners... good example are playstation 3 tourney in Cyberjaya.... fully sponsored and supported.... not even asked for entry fee.... but what happened.... the turn out is not so good to what expected.... sponsor pun dah start bising to organiser.... imagine...all the hard work done by the organiser to convince company to sponsor...wasted... bila dah buat tournament...tak datang... bila no tournament.... make noise no tournament... when ask why x join even FOC... answer.. JAUH... to many excuse made by our gamers... i salute to the gamers (true gamers) who is willing to travel even to SINGAPORE using their own expenses...even not winning.... but they support the industry.... we need more kind of gamers like this.... another example.... mun wai tournament.... berapa kali postpone due to tak cukup korum.... suprisingly it WE tourney....claimed to have thousand of supporters.... so sad... on support by government.... government (certain people/glc) do support this industry.... but first they want to see something concrete first... i dunno other places... but in cyberjaya... sponsors do come from government... the playstation 3 tourney is a benchmark for the bigger thing to happen in this industry.... how big? i can say even we can have our own e-sports arena... so please...if you guys want to see this industry grow.... please support it for the passion... not for money or else... think BIG...

Hello guys! 1st and foremost let me do a lil introduction
Im sCrUBieE from Malaysiai use to be a hardcore, dedicated, no life gamer once upon a time, My very 1st competition was counter strike which was very fun at that time but eventually we lost to well known clans like PLAM, FMJ NKAA n many more cant remember..
Later on i tried Warcraft during 2004, and my very 1st competition was at Hartamas it was a 2v2 tournament, amazingly i got 1st place, pictures taken, medals and trophy, huge mock cheques and best of all CASH! well it felt great n i continued playing warcraft competitively.

Then my next major tournament was ESWC and i got 2nd place and i lost to PaulYan, next major tournament would be WCG 2004 i got 3rd place. Ive joined many mini tournaments such as the Taylors college challenge which i got 1st place and many more cant really remember. Afterall, Mygozone(a local gaming community) interviewed me was really amazing, felt like i was appreciated in the gaming community but all good things need to come to an end. Reality hits in, not many tournaments in our local scene Cash and prizes was relatively low.

During 2005 my friend introduced to me a MMORPG which was more rewarding! People can really make money by playing mmorpg it could even be their day time job. So i started playing mmorpg games hopping here n there trying to find for opportunities. After awhile as life gets harder, im currently doing an honours degree which is much tougher and my time is very limited, girl friend hits in, and i eventually quitted gaming.

But that didnt stop me, haha im pretty addicted to gaming i was scrolling around for tournaments and i bump in to king kong he organize Dawn of War tournaments around klang valley. The reason why i joined because its free, wouldnt be any harm if i join =D and so i tried but i got top 8 haha it was pretty hilarious, from that day onwards i bought the original copy of the game so i could train with people outside of Malaysia. I would get top 3 most of the time after buying the original copy and i believe that it is a very good idea to have FOC to participate tournaments, this would most definitely invite players all around looking for opportunities. Best of all ive met new friends from all over klang valley, including people from ipoh(fuji) xD

Sad to say ive quit the gaming scene because im currently working and studying at the same time. I own my own PLC which took alot of capital n time. But im really looking forward towards starcraft 2 maybe i would play casually or maybe competitively we'll see how things work out =)

Conclusion
Money is a strong motivation.
A great Gaming community to build new friends of network.
Peers and Family support plays a strong role.
And last but not least know your goals, have the determination to achieve it Good luck!

hmm no offense azza484, maybe a reason for less support is the fact that its a ps3 tourny.. not as many people have ps3 than comp gamers. Still i agree, the gaming population has to mature and also the general population. People have to get over the stereotype that gamers are a bunch of lifeless nerds. Gaming is like anything, to be good you gotta practice a lot. Yet when I do that for example its at the risk of being called a nerd or having no life. People jsut have to mature up to the fact that gaming is a thing thats here to stay
