Noob Question :

My Last Samurai BluRay finally arrived.

My question is, i watch it on my PS3. Is there anyway to watch the movie in full screen ?

It's in letterbox.

Movies has wider ratio than our current widecreen TVs. They're mostly 1.85 or 2.35 or 2.40. 1.85 is the closest, so there will only be very small black bars you won't notice it.

BDs will never put the movie into 1.33 ratio (unlike DVDs). It sometimes transfered to fit 1.78, though that only was done with movies shot with Super35, because the movie directors don't like cropping their films. So what you see is actually the real ratio of the movie. To get it to fill up your screen (actually, why? you'll loose portions of the image) you can use the zoom function on your PS3 or TV.

Most movies that was shot on film used Super35 or anamorphic Panavision film stock. Both are framed at 1.33:1 physically.

Super35 uses matting technique, which blacks out the top and bottom to get the aspect ratio as desired by the director. The ratios can be 2.40, 2.35 or 1.85 theatrically. When transfered for home viewing, it can be opened up to 1.78 or even 1.33, which means you'll actually see more information (top and bottom) on than the theatrical version. So if the director doesn't mind to keep the original theatrical ratio, you will see it in full 1.78 (16:9) or 1.33 (4:3) without any cropping.

Anamorphic Panavision stretches the image vertically to fit the 1.33 film stock frame. When projected/transfered, they will be unstretched to get the 2.35 ratio. It uses the whole frame, so it will have better resoulution. This technique will always be in that ratio, so to fit your screen (1.78 or 1.33), the image will have to cropped, using a technique called pan & scan. You'll lose portions of the image the entire movie, and the director usually don't like to do this.

These are atually 35mm formats, there are also 70mm. There are many more film formats, like cinemascope, etc.

Digitally shot 1080p HD will have 1.78 ratio unless cropped.

Judging from the last post i did till this page, i can only shake my head. The intention was to keep the whole discussion mainly about BD and making the whole discussion look somewhat civilised and proper, after all it is "All Things about Blu-Ray". I would love to have the discussion here to somewhat resemble the level of quality and maturity in the AVSForum (the good ones, not the fanboyish blabbering kind), but it looks like the lot here would rather have it kopitiam-style, sitting down with one leg propped on the stool while talking boisterously about women anatomy. Ashamed to link this forum to those rednecks,......yeah, they do hoard and stuff, but at least when it comes to conversation and discussions, they're civil and know their limits.

Carry on, no point "blowing a gasket" like someone pointed it here , over something the crowd here have unanimously agreed that is tolerated and encouraged, that's the way you wanted this whole section to become. I guess most of you guys here would rather have this forum here looking like an IM conversation rather than a fruitful discussions, boobs and all.

I'm in CA. at the moment, and am open to BD purchases from Amazon to be brought back from US. Only coming back to KL end of this month, so that i can bring back the two National Treasure BDs with me. Any takers, i'll see if i can do the same for you.

Nope. The news on Macrumors were right, you cant find any more iPhones in Apple Stores right now, there is an "indefinite" waiting period for it. I guess Apple's gearing up for the 3G model.

Yes, guys do get a little carried away sometimes, and if your intention was just to steer the topic back on track, all you could have said was something along the lines of "Guys, let's get back on topic shall we?". But no, you chose to step up onto your moral soap box and form all kinds of judgement about people "obsessing, fantasizing, fawning and worshipping movies with boobies", and talk down to us like a bunch of pubescent teenagers.

Anyway, news flash to you... it's quite possible to be mature and at the same time, have the occasional light hearted harmless fun.

"Occasional" is not what i'd choose to describe about the "harmless fun" you decide to talk most of the time here. Might as well change it to "All Things about Blue-Movie" while you're at it. It is simple, dont want people to talk you down like pubescent teenagers? Act, talk and type like adults!

And oh, my comment about turning a discussion forum IM-conversation stays, i dont see any worthwhile content in those kind of posts here. Posts like aiman's are the ones i'd consider worth browsing through.

If everybody were to keep every post as civil, mature and politically correct as you wish for, this would indeed be a boring forum. I hope never to see that day.

And just to remind you, I was the one who expressed surprise at why anybody would choose to buy Hostel on BD.

"Act, talk and type like adults!"
*shakes head* Seems like we got some moral policeman/teacher/parent in the house. No wonder you describe yourself as a recluse.

Try AVSforum. Their posts are chock-full of worthwhile information, but they present them in a manner that is not snooze-worthy. Here, things tend to drag on to coffeshop material, youhave to sift through piles and piles of inane tableside talk before you can come to the posts that contain the info you want to get to.

It all goes to how you word them. Your post can be informative and still be entertaining to read. If you post them point blank , complete with cut and paste with bullet points, of course you'll lull your audience to sleep.

You already have the kopitiam thread in this forum, dont turn this into another one. You say LYN is a tech-enthusiast/gadget related community, but posts in here hardly describe that level of sophistication that THAT title implies on the LYN front page.
