what you mean the the problem only apply to those with nvdia graphic? whats the display problem actually?

Added on May 31, 2008, 2:14 pm
after reading through the thread, as my experience, is the faulty mother board so far.
just before 2 weeks ago, i have changed with two faulty mother board, which are the A08 CN-OPU073 mobo. The reason i changed it is because everytime i turn on the laptop, the screen displayed some RAINBOW above and below the screen, also got the weird vertical or horizontal lines too when i get lucky yawn.gif  That time i need to press the power button again again and again in order to successfully log into the window. But if does log into the window, after few minutes, the screen distorted by some crazy colour, then the laptop shut down. This problems occured during the 1st mobo replacement.

The 2nd replacement: The same problem, but the probability of logging into window has increased, but still the laptop will shutdown automatically.
i remember that time when i watched "DIE HARD 1" with my xps, after 2 hours, the screen went blank (black), but the sound still continueosly producing. No matter what i pressed, the laptop cant even shut down. And, before that i like to turn off the window security centre. But that time somehow i turn it on, and it pop out a message, said that my display driver was uncompatible to...... i forgot already. At that time, i though is my x64 nvdia which download from tweakforce, caused the distortion and make my laptop unuseable. So, i uninstalled it, but still the problem occured.

After that, i went back to my hometown, called dell to replace a new mobo to me, this time, i strictly ask the lovely tech customer to sent me the new OD057P REV00, which strongly recommend by Dopod brother. So, after 2 days, they really sent me the new mobo with REV01. Now, the problem solve, works good. but i haven install any temperature monitoring program in my laptop. if do, i will update my temperature reading soon.
By the way, the engineer told me that my 2nd mobo actually had some burnt issue around the power supply connector there. shakehead.gif
haiz. dell really nothing to do and find things to do la. But finally i still get a new mobo replacemnet.

So, as a conclusion, i think our 8400 works ok. cz now i currently still installed the x64 tweak force driver. works prefectly.

Hope these can help you.

Hi KH, yes u hv the 'infamous' problem of this 'lappie'... I've exactly same problem as urs and i'm waiting for my account transfer 'cos i'm in Austria. Good to hear they 'solved' ur problem despite 2nd replacement. However, the point is if Dell didn't fix or improve on the root cause of the prob, then u're start seeing this prob again after another 6 months if i'm not mistaken, and by that time ur warranty might oredi expired. Good luck to all of us!

haha! jus wat i said, all depend on ur luck! smile.gif
and congratez tat they finally made ur machine perfect! lets cheer for dell technician support!

the 1st problem is the most common problem, this is wat they call "flaw" or something like tat. most of the oversea user face tis problem, and one of my fren too. they said it was graphic card fault, burn or something.
Well, the machine will only perfect for another 6 months... Just wait and time will tell...

QUOTE(skeith @ May 31 2008, 03:13 PM)
but the 2nd problem of urs, i not really bout it  rclxub.gif
8400 is a discrete graphic card, not integrated. means seperated.
*
8400 is integrated to the Mobo, meaning it's not separated, it's built into the motherboard, so if anything happen, the only thing is to change to the whole motherboard.

Nvidia i use, intel graphic card is not compatible to my job.
and u noe, this is no onli occur in XPS even inspiron oso hv tis kid of problem, it jus graphic card's burn, tis is wat my fren telling me coz he is using inspiron.

and i tell u wat, every electronics hardware are going to have problem after some times. please dont mind bout de weakness of him, as long as u support him. this is wat my fren teach me, he brough sony vaio few weeks b4 i get my dell.

thx
*
I don't agreed that every electronics hardware are going to have problem after 6 months... This is totally not acceptable. And i also tell u what, I study electronics and computer, working as Engineer in Semiconductor firm. I know the requirement of modern chips... I know Dell support is excellent, but their quality is not up to the standard (maybe R&D fault in this case). Pls do not support blindly to Dell, if there is a prob, it is! Thanks!

Hi all, i've modded the heatsink with copper plate. Now my idle GPU temp should be 58~60... however, the real improvement is when graphic is full loaded (i didn't purposely measure, but in my memory, it's below 90C). I can see the CPU temp also increasing, and the difference between CPU temp and GPU temp is ~9C, which means the heat transfer is quite good.

Oh ya... i noticed my battery life also improved... cos the heatsink fan is not turning at all during normal use... wink.gif

And now i'm trying to tri-boot with Vista, Ubuntu and OSX... unfortunately, my hd got bad sectors... #$#$%#@%#

where did you bought the copper sheet?

I bought it from UK, cos i'm in europe now... wink.gif

http://www.metaloffcuts.co.uk/

They do ship internationally and it's cheap and fast. I mean really fast i got my piece of copper.

Regarding the procedure, u can check this forum thread.

Why tri-boot when you can now use VM? biggrin.gif

I wanna use native install to get best performance mah... in the process i learn a lot as well, especially to work around to get OSX working with all hardware... though many many reinstall took place... sweat.gif

Anyway, i starting to like uBuntu and OSX... both OS feel very "punchy" lar... like got a lot of housepower... wink.gif Now i know y once ppl migrate to apple, then there's no return... rclxm9.gif

Since i've modded with copper sheet liao, i'm going to flash back to A11 cos i notice on A12, my fan turn on all the time... ;( I don't like the noisy fan when i'm on battery mode... when using A11, the fan didn't even kick in...

A note to all, A12 really helps to reduce the temp by ~4 degree, however i don't think this is going to help on the issue either... it's not the base temp tat affect the GPU, try run 3D mark and see wat's ur max temp... b4 the mod, my GPU temp can go as high as 104 degree then i quickly terminate the demo... it's the heat transfer efficiency of the thermal pad. Dell (or nVidia) really doing not enuff on this... more and more ppl will have bricked laptop after the warranty period and nothing they can do after warranty expired. I think Dell might face lawsuit in very near future. If u notice the press statement by Dell, they only cover those unit under warranty period... bad Dell.... sad.gif

I don't think u should buy now unless they're coming out with a better solution... this is not minor problem, it will cause the laptop dead, u won't able to use it at all in worst case. Unless u opt to go for intel gc then should be no prob.

Haiz, the specific term still havent out yet, so dun be so happy first...

As me I would like a "cooled" GPU and not extended warranty...that doesnt helps much and within warranty we still need keep servicing our laptop because of hot gpu like car(ahh,i hate that and waste my time doing that)

Some how nothing been heard from nVidia side, so irresponsible and they should provide a enhanced gpu for users worldwide. Now lappie with nvidia gpu really sucks and I can see why new studio series is using ATI gpu but not nvidia.
*
Since i've modded my heatsink with copper, hopefully i don't hv this prob again... The extended warranty is kind of assurance to me only... in case it happen again... sweat.gif

There are 2 conclusions to this:

If my system is totally free of this gpu problem after copper mod, i think Dell should take half of the responsible for this defect since obviously the heatsink design sucks... and the gpu only will suffer when the temp reaches certain level, >100C??? (nvidia should knows by now and they should let us know this "max" temp. as well). This means that this problem will keep strike those who always stretch the gpu (eg. gaming).

If my system hv this gpu problem again after copper mod, i think nvidia hv some serious design flaw in all gpu, cos my gpu temp now is max @ ~87C after purposely stretch the gpu. Dell provide us with this extended warranty and bios update will only buy nvidia time to avoid paying a big sum of money at once.

Many claim that it's capable of reducing 10 degrees at peak usage. At idle around 5 degrees. I saw someone saying that while playing devil may cry 4 the temp is only 84 with copper mod. It's considered very good as my gpu goes up to 97 when playing warcraft. Idiotic.
*
I can get ~18 celcius reduction during peak usage... last time b4 mod temp can reach ~105 celcius!!! then i terminate fast fast... now max is ~87 celcius nia.

QUOTE
no la just use my car's air-cond blow into the fan hole lol...kaka, use air-cond only managed to get 49c on gpu temp....we should boycott nvidia>.<my desktop also wan change to AtI radeon, better and cheaper than nvidia.

the problem is actually not fully nvidia fault... it's the thermal pad that cause this heat transfer inefficiency. After this copper mod, my cpu and gpu temp is actually correlated, tat shows that the heat transfer is good... icon_idea.gif

It's actually both. First it's nvidia's bad chip. Then add in the lousy over-thick thermal pad, kills the gpu faster.

Anyways bro tamade, what is the thickness of the copper sheet you used?
*
The dimension is 14mm (length) x 14mm (width) x 1.5mm (thickness), i bought it from "metalofcuts" in UK, cos i'm in europe now... biggrin.gif

pmmonkey,
Bulk?Haha, not many of us wanted to do so and only reduces temperature by 10C. Somemore my system still in warranty, if really want to do also wait until the warranty ends. Oh ya if can't find copper foil then just use aluminium foil which is available in the market. Just go to supermarket and you could find it easily+cheap.
Pls don't use aluminum foil to substitute copper, I've tried and the thermal pad is actually better than aluminum foil in heat transfer. Only copper or few better materials (expensive) can lower the temperature.
