Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) provides new proactive security technologies for Windows XP to better defend against viruses, worms, and hackers along with increased manageability and an improved experience for users.
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 fixes a range of bugs in Windows XP. It doesn't matter what XP updates you have previously applied to your system, SP3 will update any unpatched, partially patched or completely updated system (it includes all previously released patches and updates). XP SP3 fixes the security holes so you won't get attacked.

Microsoft periodically combines updates, fixes, and other improvements into a single package - Service Pack. Microsoft develops updates, fixes, and other improvements that address issues reported by the company's customers and partners. To make it easier for customers to get these updates and enhancements, Microsoft periodically combines them into a single package, and makes that package available for all Windows customers.

These packages are called service packs", Microsoft revealed in the introduction of the Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3. With the Release Candidates of Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 heading to increased testing pools the past week, and with Microsoft cooking the first public build of the first refresh for its latest Windows client, the official overview for XP SP3 is the only crumb from the service pack fiesta over at the Redmond company. The Release Candidate of XP SP3 in a pre-final stage has already shipped to MSDN and TechNet subscribers.

The announcement from Microsoft Technet forums:
QUOTE
Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.

Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas - you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn't have done this without you.

We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.

On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

REMINDER:

There is no official download link from Microsoft yet.
There are rumours around saying that this is a leak version of the SP3 and might contain an undetectable keylogger for all those warez guys out there to monitor what are you typing and doing with your PC.

If you could not wait, maybe one of you guys can experiment it and let us know the results.... hehe

I did the first step: download and run it.
Please make sure you guys close all active programs (antivirus as well just in case it interrupts with the updating process) before running this update, backup essential data and create system restore point if you want to.
Update takes less than 30mins; at the end of this update process you'll be prompt to restart, which you can choose to restart now or later.
As you boot up your computer (after the Windows XP bootscreen) you'll see a familiar "blue screen", it looks similar to the one after you install SP2; the screen offers you the option to enable automatic updates or choose to do it later. (or something along those lines, if my memory serves me well.)
After that it's just the regular login screen in front of you again; you can check on the build number using System Information, it should be 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600 (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information)

I could slipstream it using nLite with this one. Just extract it with WinRAR and use nLite to slipstream it. I've also tested the slipstreamed SP3 install too. hehehehe

The only place you can see the build number of the Service Pack is through System Information. Under "Hardware Abstraction Layer", it should read: Version = "5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2111)"

SP3 can be downloaded from MS site before 29/4/08 but that SP3 is not the final version..
That v3264 is RC2 not the RTM version..

The final version of SP3 doesn't have a version number, e.g. v.3264, v.3311. Those are still RC batch of SP3's.

Installation on my old HP notebook (P3 1GHz) gave me a scare after it ran 100% in resources during files update halfway. I was forced to restart it and what the system did after the restart was, it actually restored the system to its orginal status. I was asked by the system if I want to reinstall or cancel after that. I ran the update for the 2nd time and this time it went successfully. rclxms.gif

You could also use UltraUXThemePatcher

from the author of VistaMizer:

Has been tested and works with the final.

RC means Release Candidate

Microsoft might have few candidate for it, so they release it out to test by user around b4 releasing the final version

still havent found any way to remove the RC v.3311, System Restore not working too...

tested SP3
took me bout 1hour++ to install, another 2hours++ to uninstall

SP3 made my startup much slower, and after uninstalling even slower
dun work with Event ID 4226
when i install this, i can't connect to the net
saying something like TCIP.sys is missing or something
can't remember...

i tried to do system restore prior SP3
but can't...

so eventually in order to get myself back online
i had to do windows repair
which resulted in needing to update windows XP
thank god i found XP patches
if not the hassle of trying to bypass WGA

all in all, if u dun need SP3
dun need to install it
to me performance wise is the same as SP2
maybe i din test it in details

and becuz of this, rob me of my precious sleep =_="

You'll need a new cdkey if you slipstream. However if you choose to install SP3 on top of an SP2 system, you won't be asked for one.

Q: What about Windows XP Professional x64 Edition?

A: SP3 does not apply to the x64 version of Windows XP. Instead, that operating system is updated via service packs aimed at Windows Server 2003. The latest Windows 2003 service pack is SP2.

Dun install Direct X10 for windows XP bcos it won't support

Last time when i installed it, the graphics is damn nice.... Gaming experience is excellent

Windows XP SP3 is finally here for those that use Windows Update, and here is a direct link to the stand-alone version of SP3 for x86 XP systems (32 bit). Neowin reader WindowsNT says: "There won't be a 64bit version until Windows Server 2003 hits SP3 since they share the same code base."

Here is an interesting article regarding SP3 performance, ignoring the fact that Vista SP1 is still faster than XP SP2/SP3 users will enjoy a performance boost over SP2. When will people learn that Vista ain't all bad!

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers experience with the operating system. This white paper summarizes what is new in Windows XP SP3.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release to Web (RTW) Delayed
Windows XP Service Pack 3 was supposed to land today for mass download, but I'm afraid this won't happen. Microsoft today explained what's the main reason behind this last moment delay:

In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web. To help protect customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to the web.

I know many of you already know about the leaked Windows XP SP3 download link, but I prefer to post only legit links here. Microsoft is working on fixing the problem and should release Windows XP SP3 to web very soon.

@komag, next time put the source of the news too.

We are also testing a fix, and will make it available once that process is complete.  Once they have installed the fix, Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers should be able to run both service packs.

Until then, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack.  Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers running Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP1 should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services for additional information.

The SP3 that you guys talking about was not final yet. I have tested them myself. This only available for MSDN and TechNet subscribers. The final end users version might be a little bit different.

Microsoft develops updates, fixes, and other improvements that address issues reported by the companys customers and partners.

Here is the English Version Direct from MS Servers.

midnight_plue, if you have already applied previous patches and can live without the following new features;

Nothing says you should install SP3. Vista/2008, Languages and Security Center cosmetic makeover.... I know I don't see anything that warrants installation but if you insist on installing, you should give it a bit of time to mature. Newly released patches/SPs are always buggy.

hmm i have no other problems with sp3 final release except for the shut down menu thing. when i leave my comp on for quite long, the shut down menu won't appear even whn i go start->shut down

probably something corrupted during installation. i try reinstall without uninstalling sp3 1st. see whether the problem still occurs or not.

I think it's better to format and install a fresh copy of Windows then straight update it, than to update it after we used the OS for long time, coz we had already installed so many programs and updates + fixes, might cause crash/problem after update to SP3...

I still haven't update it though, the update balloon just appeared in my auto-update this morning.

10-20gb is enough for xp with other software..

you can install games on another partition,

moved your "my document" folder and song folder to the other partition too..

Better u try it first rather than asking many question because different pc have different software installed. So,maybe the problem arise from many reason...

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers ?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en

I don't see the 'consumer' word here. Its professionals and developers. I'm neither. Its the same thing, but where is the one for consumers... it should state clearly.

I'm on Vista since that's what most of us use anyways, but I dual-boot XP just for the sake of it. I prefer downloading the redistributable version.

they expect the average consumer to use Windows Update..

You may download the full installer (316MB) if you have more than 1 PC to update from the Download Center.

anyway, I installed it on my old PC last Friday, no noticable new features.

I wish M$ re-release K922120 (LLTD Responder). The existing version wont install with SP3 while M$ did not include this in SP3.

DX10? whistling.gif Seriously its not anything to be bothered about right now. It runs slower and the graphical difference is marginal. Just get yourself a good graphic card and wait till DX10 improves (games get better optimised for it). Most games this year are still predominantly DX9. flex.gif

err, if im not mistaken, DX10 is not the real performace for DX10, the real DX10 is DX10.1 , correct me if im wrong:)

DX10.1 is a small increment that NVIDIA has decided to skip. Which means it doesn't effect 60% of PC gamers who use Vista(or probably more). Regardless of the Assasins Creed performance....it still runs much slower than DX9...Users will need a more powerful graphic card to run DX10 on the same setting.

Developers wont push for DX10 just quite yet...The market just hasnt worked out for Vista yet.

I felt my Pc to be slightly more responsive and the bootup time slightly reduced after installing SP3. But just slightly.

I end another task and suddenly I see massive reg.exe running in background laugh.gif then process completed. doh.gif

But until now I still haven't restart my pc yet... scared anything will go wrong sad.gif

and I'm torrenting... so... lol.

Ha... I usually clean install Vista + XP and dual boot. I then install Vista SP1, and then now XP SP3. XP is on my desktop machine because 'it's there'. I don't use it.

To be honest, unlike Vista SP1, I could barely experience any gain of performance. In fact, I have come to believe and I know that XP SP3 has all the security fixes and hotfixes that you used to download via Windows Update.

Reading the white paper of XP SP3, there was hardly any mention of performance enhancement.

1 - click START menu, select Run... menu.
2 - type in winver. Press enter

you will get the version info displayed, same like when you click on Help -> About Windows menu in explorer...

erm i'm not talking abt getting sp3 thru auto updates. but rather the problem is after updating to sp3 (or maybe before updating) the auto updates in my win xp can't function well and make my computer hang and cant load shutdown menu so i turn off the auto updates.

in case if there's any updates where i can get new fixes from microsoft without using auto updates? or maybe find some solution to this issue of auto updates makes my comp hang during shut down.

Thanks man, but I already downloaded it before you posted. I would recommend downloading and installing it rather than through "Windows Update" or "Automatic Updates".

if your PC hangs when installing updates when shutting down the PC, try installing the downloaded updates BEFORE shutting down, you can double-click on the yellow shield icon on the system tray and install it right away. Therefore, you'll save your time and hang time when shutting down the PC, good idea isn't it? thumbup.gif sweat.gif

after reading all 18 pages, this is wat i get:
1. some ppl get/dont get improvement in performance... so does it depend on the com for example like the ram/processor/etc?
2. again some ppl after install run smoothly but some have problem like IE crash/can auto-update/etc... does majority no problem or got problem?
3. since SP 3 is just a cumulative of all updates, does it really a necessary if i using SP 2 but alway keep my window updated?

BTW Fariz, would it be advisable to update from SP2 to SP3 or from direct SP1 (original OEM CD) to SP3?

Because I can't do a complete install of SP3 now, yeah I'm running it and sometimes depending on its mood it will popup shutdown errors, this and that. I might do a reformat.

So which would be more preferable? Thanks.

sp3 works fine. All the issues you hear about are probably from those who installed the sp3 beta or rc version.

So far, the one I install full release is working fine. Installed it in more than 10 PCs all also no problem.

Those who have problems probably have their com installed with all sort of junks like beta drivers, invasive software, illegal cracks and lots of malwares running.

There's only 2 illegal softwares I'm using, WinRar and MS Word. mellow.gif
Everything else is untouched, original, and free from malware.

I think I should have shut down my AV and other stuffs during install. Maybe that's the hiccup point. sad.gif

my advice is to turn off completely any software that blocks editing/changes to registry or windows system files (Antivirus/Spyware software etc) before you update then turn it on after updating.

No hiccups for me after updating to SP3. Using Windows Ori btw.

how do you install sp3?

if you use the standalone installer, you can remove SP3 using Add/Remove Program.

you're using latest hardware and your usb not working anymore? must be your windows installation corrupted while upgrading..

My mic doesn't seem functioning after installed SP3. When I tried to test the mic, no response. Only got the sound that I'm touching the mic.

I've installed SP3 on like 10PCs or so and none of them had any issues. They're all genuine, already-stable systems though.

Try download the SP3 installer again, better with download manager such as: Flashget.
If you've download the installer with <300MB, then it's not a complete installer.
