my hamster "jojo" suddenly become so hyperactive sweat.gif  sweat.gif
he keep run here and there just look a way to get out the tank like "prison break" shakehead.gif  shakehead.gif
is my hamster fade out of me or dislike the tank or the environment not suitable for him??
but at last i touch him 2nite his fur is smooth and silky
thanks for help

It is fine. An active hamster is better than a non-active one coz non-active ones can mean they are either bored or sick. Just let your Jojo adjust in time.

uiyyooohh, gratzz!! V7 edy, well as usual im digging a knowledge form the experts here, well becoz of my hammy mother bite her pups, so i separate her, the pups already around 21 old days, i only have 1 cage and 1 tank, at first i put the mom and her pups together but after they gaduh2, i separate the mom and put in the dad in the tank with the pups, so is it ok if i put the dad together with 4 pups since the mom seem so garang and i dont know y...i worried if the dad will breed with 21 old days pups...sound funny, but i want to know... sweat.gif
*
Firstly, to breed means you have to get as many tanks and cages ready for separating the young. You shouldn't be housing with the male coz there is a chance the male would breed with the young females. You should separate the male in 1 tank, female in 1 tank.... then the baby females in 1 tank and the baby males in 1 tank. In the end, breeding needs about 4 tanks/cages minimum.

Don't think about saving cost and stuff.... you are their guardian and you should take responsibility in doing proper breeding and proper separation.

QUOTE(brianshong @ Apr 20 2008, 11:27 AM)
hi. I'm a new hamster owner and just own 2 male Robo. Really thanks u guys for the good tips on the bedding, food, water and cage selection. I will post some pic of my hammy and hurray for V7.
*
For Robos, you should use a tank instead of a cage coz tanks have better floor space and your robo won't really get hurt. Bedding, you can use brands like Chipsi Classic, Chipsi Extra, Delikate, Kaytee, Healthy Pet, Breeders Celect. Please look at the 1st page for a bedding review.... but the most important is a sand bath. Robos got more oil secretions so they need to groom themselves to get rid of the extra oils. This doesn't mean you need to shampoo them, just get a quality sand bath like Sluis sand bath(RM16+) or Delikate Snowy sand bath.... these work well and is not too dusty. Food, get Prestige for them as it is loaded with good stuff.

why like that??? she is not like that when i first brought her home, yesterday i went other places and just come back. is that i din wash my hand then straight feed her or wat??? T.T
*
I find it odd for a WW to bite you. I think your method for picking and approaching your hamster is wrong. From now on, you should pick up your Binky using a cup. With this method, she won't freak out with your hand.

QUOTE(MooZz @ Apr 20 2008, 01:50 PM)
erm...is living world brand bedding okie???
*
No.... it is pine. Long term usage can cause lung problems and liver problems coz of the phenols from the wood.

QUOTE(raksaser @ Apr 20 2008, 01:53 PM)
Yaaa..last time i use delikate bt nw using living world..is it ok wit living world??
*
Just use delikate. If you wanna use Chipsi, then only use the Classic or Extra.

QUOTE(drexar @ Apr 20 2008, 01:58 PM)
hi guyz.. does winter gold bigger normal winter white?
*
Yes, winter gods are bigger coz they are MIX BREEDS. They are not pure, they have been hybrid with RC hamsters and their genetics makes them able to put on more weight and look bulkier than normal WWs.

QUOTE(drexar @ Apr 20 2008, 02:02 PM)
owh.. then can we breed winter gold and winter white agouti? is it possible?
*
Do not do that. Breed winter gold with winter gold. Do not stray to include the normal WW line. That means you should NEVER breed with agouti, sapphire or pearls.

First, I wanna congrats for the V7  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

Second, bad news for me as I lost 2 hamsters within 3 days
My AshAsh the solid sable missing on 17 April when I'm out of the house. It's my mistake that didn't close the middle lid cos I thought wanna give him better ventilation as the day is quite hot. sad.gif  He was half tame when he came to me. After some time, he was so good and tame. Always climb up to my palm whenever I put my hand into the tank. Still searching for him in the house, hope I can find him although I know chances are so low. Miss him so much...

Thrid, very heart broken news for my Black Banded Fumoffu yesterday 19 April.

Found his left eye is very swollen the night before, brought him to the vet yesterday. Vet examine him under short anesthesia. Vet told me that's due to the inner eye and nerve root infection and it pushes the eye ball to come out and the soft tissues and eye lid surrounding the eye also very bad swelling. He was curled up and sleep with the infected eye open and the other eye closed. He only able to sleep for awhile and then move again.

Only few choices for us:
1) leave him as it is and try antibiotic. But he will suffer during the trial period, he might not get thru as he will be very stress and painful. The antibiotic is not guaranteed in curing the infection, if it doesn't, then it may be too late for surgery.

2) go for surgery to remove the infected eye. Complications are so many which included he might not get thru the surgery as he is already half of his life span and there's greater risk for the anesthesia, his lungs are not clear as it'll added the risk for the surgery. If he manage to get thru the surgery, he also will be very stressful and suffer throughout the 2 weeks recovery process. Suture break down, infection of the wound, relapse of the infection to the inner ear and lungs, ...etc.

3) leave him without treatment and let him go when his time come. But he will continue to suffer as the infection will be worse after that.

4) put him to sleep without having pain and suffer.

We really dunno what to do when we look at him suffering and yet we can't do anything for him cry.gif

At last, decided to have choice 4 as this is the way he no need to suffer anymore. Hope he can RIP as he was buried beside DigDig(solid umbrous). He was sleeping so peacefully when we bury him. At last, no more suffering for him. Always miss you, Fumoffu.  sad.gif

Oh dear, sorry for your lost. I also had a similar case. My gerbil had a face tumour, and the tumour made her face swell and it was pushing her eye out. I made a decision to end her suffering too. Was sad coz it was my senior and also 1st gerbil in the family.

sangels i know the do's and dont's, i just want to know what color coat can breed with, especially regarding to dwarf hamster, example, can agouti breed with pearl something like that  sweat.gif
*
There are many websites that you can read to understand. If WW species, as long is agouti, pearl and sapphire, you can interbreed the colours.... but never breed with winter gold@puddings.

You are still new at this, so do not jump into so much breedings 1st. Research and learn.

Yes, you shouldn't rearrange their nest. Hamsters sleep in their own little corner or hiding place. It is their hoarding and sleeping place. This can be recognize with the food and hay gathered. You should change everything weekly lah, but don't go about rearranging the whole cage/tank every day. It can just stress them.

Yes, you can start breeding at 4 months old.... but the rule is still the same. After breeding, let the female rest 3 months then only breed again.

Robos are actually one of the hardest to breed. Not to say hard like they will fight or what lah. Is just that robos tend to breed if they are compatible for each other. If the female is not a breeding type, then it won't breed.

Yes, you scoop with a cup then later you gently let her climb onto your hand.

The smell is heavy in the sand area.. so i will normally close it once it is too dirty and change the new one for them. It is very happy to see them exciting rolling in the new sand. hehe
