I tested out 3 types of audio ear/headphones for my guitar amps and zoom g1.

1. Somic SM-440

2. Philips SBC HL140

3. Sony Earphones that came with my walkman.

Conclusion.

1. Somic = Blurr/bassy not treble, not clear sound, but better than other similar branded headsets that aren't manufactured by known manufacturers in audio field.

2. Philips = Much better, trebly, better than other non-branded sets/IT headset manufacturers like somic and the likes.

3. Sony earphones/earbuds = No bloody contest, this baby is cheap and the treble/clarity is far superior than even the philips headset. I need to turn the amp/zoom g1 volume down by half before it kills my ear drums.

It's very clear to me that you do not need to spend tons of money on a good set of headphones, because the truth is, they will never come close to the clarity/treble that an earphone/earbud can offer.

I don't know about you, but headphones seems to require more power to get the volume you want, and it requires more high quality material inside to get so much treble so that it would penetrate your ears from the outside.

This is too much effort and price to pay when you could simply just spend under 100 ringgit for a good pair of sony Earbuds/phones and get superior sound.

I was floored by the clear/crisp sound from my zoom g1 when I plugged the earphones in.

This Sony earphone is the lowest end unit used in their walkmans. They sell better ones individually and I think I will try to get better ones for use with my guitar practice in private.

It seems other people agree that cheap earbuds can destroy even professional headphones as well for guitar amps practice.

I don't wanna kill my ears, so I'll stick to headphones if I ever have to use them to practice.

I certainly don't care much about sound quality through earphones. In a gig you don't expect to hear every single harmonic anyway.

been doing this for almost a year now.
Using headphones for practice, while depriving you of the "amp effect" (you know, ego and adrenaline boost of hearing yourself play. LOUD.) saves you damn alot of money.

I have a guitar, bass, multiFX, and stompboxes. saving up for another guitar, but i don't have an amp!
I just run headphones into my multifx and thats it. I don't even plan on getting an amp anytime soon. the studios and gig organizers are too kind.

Usually I play using my headphones too, but I gotta say, I kinda hate it. It feels very un-liberating.

It's very clear to me that you haven't used a really good set of headphones, such as the Beyerdynamic DT-770s or Audio Technica ATH-M50s . And if it's treble you're looking for, the Sony MDR-7506 will give you plenty. All of these headphones will run you RM 400 at least, with the beyers going around RM 600 for a used pair.

It's because headphones usually have a higher impedance compared to earphones.

Hell no I would never agree to that. Your headphone simply isn't a "professional headphone", at least in my point of view.

Oh btw it doesn't matter if you blast music through earphones or headphones, both can destroy your hearing.

owh, how fortunate are you bman. your ears havent opened up to the whole world of great sounds yet, and thats good coz you dont really have to spend to be happy.

for those of us here who has heard and used professional studio monitors and different headphones, our ears can never be happy til we get it as good as or better than what we have heard.

haha... at first i was shock and partly agree with bman... sometimes i use my philips headphones for practicing at night but i dont like it because the sounds tend to be bassy and not tight and the cables are annoying... but it so true when u've experienced with professional studio monitors, it wont be the same if u compare with the cheap s.e. walkman earphones... lol... satisfactory is totally different...
