QUOTE(daijoubu @ Apr 15 2008, 08:46 AM) I've noticed too that the holes on the other side (top) is larger than those that of the bottom grill, which shows that MS really did botched up the desing of the xbox. Such a pity. Anyway thanks for sharing your experience. I did wanted to put a fan on the top too, but the hole is too small. Perhaps a shroud will do, but i have no time to make a proper shroud at the moment Good day,Some updates, after using the fan at the side, it seems that the temperature did not decrease as much as when putting the fan on the rear. This blows out my whole initial theory >.<. edit : By the way, what type of 80mm fan you used at the bottom? I've used 70mm fans, mounted right next to the grill. The static pressure of the fan isnt strong enough to overcome the grills, which i believe is the reason to blame why that setup doesnt cool the xbox significantly better than mounting it on the rear (which has larger grill holes). Aiyoh i've forgotten to take pics of my xbox ...... I wouldn't say you've blown your theory. There is air going in but it's not enough to reach the GPU side. I use 2 coolermaster fan to blow from top and bottom side of the xbox. I'm gonna further my plan. My xbox warranty already just pass so I will Open it. I'll be waiting for somestuff to arrive. It's a very simple mod but looks pretty good as well. [attachmentid=444420] I have ordered WhisperMax, the Plastic Casing that goes on top of the heatsink and Fan all will be replaced. As you can see I'm gonna cut a hole on the casing to fit a 70 mm fan and I just wanna put acrylic so can see thru .... the sponge idea i've got it from XCM fanconcept as well. It's a very good idea cuz it directs the air to the heatsink till the rear. So it's gonna be pretty silent and awesome ....hahaha But there's one thing I'm pretty concern is DUST .... Anyway, i have thought of dust, and the only was is to filter the intake. This wont eliminate it for good, but it'll greatly reduce the amount. But to filter the intake, you'll need a fan with a high static pressure so that it'll be able to push the air through. To achieve this, you can do two ways : - to maintain aesthetics, you can opt to use a high speed 80mm, but the draw back is that it is VERY noisy. be prepared to use at least 45++dBa fans. standard 80mm filters can be used. best is to use two fans to obtain a good enough air flow - to maintain silence, you need to use a larger fan, like a 120mm fan, and use a shroud to reduce the size to the inlet area. you'll have a more silent operation, more CFM, but its bulky and looks ugly (hard to blend it into the xbox). there is a catch here tho. using the shroud, you have to design the shroud in a way that the outlet hole total area does not differ much of the inlet area. if its too big, then you'll lose pressure, if its too small, you'll most likely constrict the air flow My intention is to actually do trial and error for both of these method and see which works best. Progress is slow cause im trying to source some parts to make the shroud Hope you have better progress =D. Update us too ya. |

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Here what i did to my xbox. Unfortunately I've accidently broke one of my fan before I've started to take this picture and I've replace the rear fan with one of my spare fans. As you can see i've elevated the bottom part so the heat from underneath can escape somewhere. I tried that but i feel very little air flow into the case because of the lack of shroud, and the very small holes of the grill |

QUOTE(seanlee89 @ Apr 29 2008, 05:25 PM) Yes, My friend and I did it together in the office What you need to do is: 1. get the stuffs i mentioned above (make sure the cardboard you bought is hard/strong enough to hold the fan.) 2. draw the diagram out on to the cardboard with the actual unit measurement size. (What i did was print to a paper 1st and then trace it to the cardboard) 3. slowly cut the card board to the shape of the diagram. 4. slowly bend the card board to form the shape like the one in the photo and stick the smaller piece to the bottom part. 5. put the fan in, screw it tight. 6. done. Hope this can help. This post has been edited by wongyewloong: Apr 29 2008, 06:01 PM |
