According to rumours, while I was day dreaming...

There was a whisper that CIMB will be taking over Maybank due to recent weaknesses.

Information was sketchy cause I was to happy till I forgot to ask why...

Can anyone confirm this?

Or was it just a dream....

Do you know how much money need to fork out for CIMB to take over Maybank?

Merger may be a bit realistic.

I don't know whether the "trader" (in the line of work, i hear alot of rubbish) in my dream talking rubbish or not, because Maybank has been significantly weaken the recent days.

Some say it expanded too fast, spending too much and incurring debt along the way. This companies are normally very easily gobbled up by rivals, because this company don't see any profit in the short run caused no more cash to fight hostile takeover.

CIMB has the cash, if Cimb is successful it can takeover all the units and tear all of them apart and make money from it and significantly expand market share by taking what is $$.

How much did CIMB funded for Maxis to go private again?

The Edge reported on speculation that maybank maybe going to merge with CIMB when they announce Wahid as the new CEO, maybe the CEO's main task is to complete a merge deal with CIMB to create a banking giant that can compete in regional market. True or not we will see in a few month time.

when two major banks in Malaysia ranking top 1 & 2 in the Bank table, i doubt it one single Bank like PB would be able to compete.

It's worth mentioning that I think some article stated that it would be the biggest bank in South East Asia. (lazy to check ref)

Look at Sime now, top 5 biggest plantation in the world!

Size and earning/profit need to match. One can be the largest but profitability margin wise might not.

Biggest doesn't mean they are best or strongest. Look at Sime and IOI or KLK financial result to compare then you will see which one is running the business more efficient.

But I have to admit in financial world particular for the like banks and financial instituition, the one has more capital has some advantage over the smaller one. But it doesn't mean the smaller one totally can't compete. In business world, the most important issue is to run the business in the most efficient way to generate profitability.

actually the main share holder of Maybank is PNB, CIMB is kahzanah. The management in these two organization does not like each other, this may be a problem for the merger.

it seem like the market like Public bank more than Maybank as the share price of PBB is traded at higher P/E compare with maybank.

MBB and CIMB can merge if BNM allows.

As for PBB, well it is harder to gain ground on merger exercise as it is under BNM's regulations and BNM dictates dos and don't. Or else CIMB can't buy SBB already-loh.

What is in the rumours is PBB and HLBB but alas, to allow the last 2 chinese-like Banks merged is akin to make them stronger. Would BNM allow? The 3rd last chinese-like Bank is SBB and see what happens.
