btw long time no see you around la BlueSilver, how's it going?

now about your shots. while they are great attempts, the flaw in your shots would be the background. subject is nice, background needs work.

If ur subject is a product, or model,
shoot with plain background, like white or black background.

and try to make ur photograph able to catch the viewer's attention in the shortest of time, like how ur frame ur shot to make viewer's attention attracted to it. That means, be sure and confident what u wanna convey.

for eg. Shot no. 7 and 8 for the old camera,
no offense but it is like those shots u found at Garage Sales section, where ppl shoot photos to show the product is scratchless or so.

I see you have a table lamp,
build a simple light studio, it makes alot of difference.

yes. tripod got cheap type. smile.gif

background can do cheap setup, just to your nearest textile shop and get while cloth. smile.gif 2 meter can already.

if don't want, use mahjong paper la. heck my some of my product shots were just using white A4 paper taped together. (yes, you can see them at goldfries.com product reviews)

and then there's the lighting issue. see, #1 and #9 for the camera shot. usually the light would highlight the product, not coming from the back of the product........ well, unless you did it with intention la. smile.gif

not necessary to have light tents. light tents cost you quite some sum.

you could DIY it for less than that.

DIY backdrop and lights
you can use any type of light, but swivel ones better.
Background can use any type of paper, size depends on what you want to shoot. If you can put it near the wall then easier, just stick the backdrop to the wall, for me I had to DIY something to hold it up
Diffuser box, any box will do, use tracing paper to cover one side of the box
Reflector I uses white cardboard.

valho's shooting small stuff, can use small setup.

for me, i snap bigger stuff, like graphic card.

so i use a foldable table + white cloth + whatever my family's standing light with white bulb.

play around with exposure and whatever else. smile.gif limited but nice. saving up for more proper lights that i saw at some shop the other day.

try using mahjong paper. i don't think calendar is good since calendar (those big ones with white back) are generally glossy.

stick the mahjong paper to a corner one of the empty walls.

in fact, try to find an place where 2 walls join, 90 degree angle that part. smile.gif

yup white light smile.gif
that is tracing paper, i use it to diffuse the top light, for my setting i need the light at the side to be brighter than the one on top but since the bulb is same power, I use a few layer of tracing paper as diffuser

ahh good point there. lighting requirement depends on subject.

mine are computer parts, lights from top is sufficient.

as for valho's case, he shoots his toy collection. lights coming from the top wouldn't bring out the feature of the toys as good as lights from the lower angles.

sometime I just use one light , depending on the effect and mood I want smile.gif

well that will depends on how you want the photos to look like and the kind of effect that you want. You can play around with the light strength and position to get different effect for your shoot, it's really like what they do when doing studio shoot smile.gif

1. number of lights
2. distance between lights and subject (intensity)
3. colors of the light
4. angle of light

interesting leh? it's like when you use studio strobes. depending on what kind of setup you want.

1 flash you bring nearer to highlight facial feature.

then another you bring further back to add a bit of light for the less emphasized portion.

then you can have whatever else you want to add some colors la. mana tau you suddenly feel like having yellow filters on the light to give it a warm feel.

RAW is a file format that keeps MORE details of what you snapped.

RAW files allows you to adjust the details even further, most people use RAW because of the ability to adjust WHITE BALANCE.

here's an example, one of the projects I did for a client of mine.

the interior was using yellowish / warm lights.

user posted image

after snapping in RAW, i adjusted the white balance and voila - you can get even the NEUTRAL colored shots. smile.gif

you have nice picture there even using kit lens...haha....
keep it on.... thumbup.gif

there's just too many misconceptions about kit lens, much thanks to enthusiasts who don't know how to paint the correct picture and newbies who continue spreading the misinformation.

i like my kit lens a lot although there are some shots which are rather difficult for me to shoot. Like if i want to shoot a chameleon really up close, I would have to squat very very near to it in order to get a good shot but then i'm afraid of reptiles so err... the things we do to get a good shot. laugh.gif

Based on these 2 pics... are they cropped and sharpen and saturated done?
It is a bit difficult to tell how good is the lens unless it is taken direct from lens.

But just by looking at these pics, they are crisp.

Next lens? Probably a zoom lens or macro lens. He! He! He! It all depends on your needs.

no crop, no sharpen but brighten. That's the problem i can't decide whether to get a zoom lens or a macro lens.

edit: the top picture just adding watermark and nothing else.

Oh... OK. Then it is great. Coz the color really comes out and it is very sharp indeed.

One thing though... the watermark thing should be smaller and it should not disturb the message of the photo. You want to show your picture to people and not your watermark... right? a small one at the corner will do.

Anyway, it all depends on your interest. Macro... if you are talking about Nikkor 105mm... it is a superb lens but at 105mm, it is kinda difficult for portrait shots. And the auto focus is very slow. But in term of sharpness... it is great. You can check some of my macro shots in my flickr site though for sample.

For zoom... in term of usefulness... of course better than macro. At least you can zoom in zoom out (anyway, am referring to Nikkor 70-200VR) but it is more than double the price of the macro lens. Until now, no ppl complain about this lens except that the size is huge.

I'll take note on exposures in the future and yeah I'm using Nikon. smile.gif Macro shots i can do with kit lens i guess since my manual focus ain't that bad but I'm pretty sure there will come a point where i just can't resist to get one. Hahahah... what's a prime lens anyways? unsure.gif

macro lens lets you get MUCH closer than the kitlens... but if you wanna go into macro photography, get ready to get down and dirty...and a lot of setup to do too...

wa... you so interested in everything...haha... then i guess just use kitlens first lor since you wanna explore every aspect of photography... fisheye lenses will only make you satisfied for a certain period of time. once you are used to the angle fisheye gives you, you will not feel the "umph" in it anymore. so only invest in fisheye when you have bought every other necessary lenses smile.gif

Macro photo taking not much set up la. Just camera, lens, short pants, t shirt and slippers.

Anyway, for portrait as in model shoot... there are many lenses that can be used. The most important is the bokeh which gonna bring the model stands out.

So, for goodbokeh, anything lower than f/2.8 will be able to give u nice bokeh easily.
So... don't worry so much.
U can try 30mm, 50mm, 85mm, 105mm, 17-55mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm

So... no worries.

nod.gif I think you've got a style going for you. Trying taking the same way you composed your Dad's picture. The style I'm observing I'd call 'big head'. tongue.gif Notice how your Dad's head seems like it's bigger or been pasted onto his body? Try replicating that.

Well...some styles allow you to shoot both portrait and landscapes. However, I personally prefer differentiating them as 1 needs Close-Ups and the other Wide. But every photographer develops in due time so see what you can pull off. smile.gif

3 & 4 has potential - 4 being the most. But I feel something is missing for 4. It's not giving me the impact or feeling though the photo is very sharp. Hmm...

thanks ed7x2 and vindiesal for the comments. My camera is just a d40 and it cost less than 2k at that time when i bought it. So maybe you can ask some "older" users here on how to get the best from your budget.

Wide angle lens eh? LOL soon i hope. laugh.gif
