Taking Canadian Pre-U (CPU) 2nd semester now. Intend to take up Chemical Engineering next year. Need to hear TRUE comments about engineering course at UTAR; eg. facilities, lecturers' attitude, students' mentality, etc.

Hope to hear from current students of FES. No childish & meaningless bashing, please.

Thanks.

IHave u thought of Sunway Monash? I've a friend doing chemical eng now.
But she told me that a few of their lecturers left Monash and went over to UTAR to teach...

Eventhough my house is just about 15km frm Sunway Monash, but not keen going there, because

(1) Very expensive ; I rather save money for Master degree in oversea,

(2) their 1st yr subjects are sort of basic and fundamental, just like the foundation program before we proceed to 2nd yr. My neighbor is having 1st yr engineering there, his comment: very dull & boring. He is eagerly looking forward to 2nd yr. (sound wasting time?)

Thanks for feedback.

1) .. erm i had the same thought as you are last time when i did my foundation .. " I rather save money for postgraduate". But now, I regretted my choice. To be honest, going oversea for your undergraduate is the best choice as you be able to study in oversea atleast 3 - 4 years . Through this time, you will pretty much get used to the new environment and in the mean time you can enjoy student life in oversea as undergraduate for the first two years will not be as hectic as postgraduate . Furthermore, you have opportunity to work there during summer break and eventually gain enuff points to apply for PR ... You cant do that when you are doing master in oversea which is only 1 -2 years ... seriously , .. it is better to go oversea for undergraduate ... +_+ I realyl regretted now haiz .. I save so much for my degree but now I do not know what kind of master do i want to take in oversea. .. = = such a predicament ...

2) .. erm, if you compare monash and utar, it is obviously monash has better reputation than utar and this is important as employer always look for student from higher reputation university ...
my fren who studying there told me that only the first year is easy ebcause they want you to decid what discipline you want to choose for your 2nd year .. Im referring to engineering course.. You will be exposed to all subjects from all engineering fields .... I dont think its a waste of time .. Monash syllabus is recognised by the world and it is within the top 100 universities in the world ... im sure it is better than utar ...

Thanks for your kind comments.

Don't feel regret, I'm sure you do learn a lot from what you are doing now. Well, maybe we just feel that the grass at the other side is always greener.

Australia Monash has better reputation but its Sunway campus is only 10 years old, my friend told me Sunway Monash is famous for the business study. Utar is 6 years old, no idea how good/bad it is.

Just found out from an uncle who is in the education field, he said many engineers (both local & overseas graduates) switch to banking, business, sales/marketing, education and some even open own restaurants after few years in the engineering job. Amazingly, with engineering background, these people do well in their new venture.

Well, seriously its normal for you to see Science grads switching to business/finance after a few years of working. Some have lost their passion in their field, while some look for higher pay.

Wsf, which Engineering are you interested in ? I can ask my friend to send you some info. Jz pm me on what you want to know and I will get him to send you an email.

Akane, domo arigatoo gozaimasu. (Thanks)

I'm interested in chemical engineering, really hope the current students will give some opinions. I would like to know why people feel UTAR is not a good choice, is it because of

-- UTAR is founded by MCA ?
-- new university ?
-- the lecturers are Malaysian, not mak salleh?
-- facilities no good ?
-- (I heard that many students having problem with English language, that's why it may affect the reputation of Utar)

I think even in the top ranking universities like Harvard, Cambridge or Oxford, not 100% of the lecturers are excellent. I feel the learning attitude of students is most important, we have to give up the spoon feeding habit we used to have in primary/secondary school.

Thanks for sharing.

It would be an added advantage if you know Mandarin especially when you works in MNC that have interest in China. But then again, English will still remain important. While we are learning mandarin, people in China are learning English. I have seen a statistic in which they claim, by 2020, China will be the country with the largest population able to converse in English.

Agree, I took Chinese for SPM last year, my parents encouraged me to do so. Who knows one day, I might be offered to work in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan. (smile)

Any news of when will Faculty of Science and Engineering be moving to Kampar ? Tried to find out from the staff of Setapak campus, but they seemed to be secretive. Maybe the students or lecturers know about it, any idea?

which course specifically are you interested in? some have already shifted, while some as still in setapak. smile.gif

I will either choose Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) or Chemical Engineering; worry that the 1st year program in Setapak campus, then subsequent years move to Kampar. rclxub.gif

went to Setapak campus, the staff said chemical engineering remains at setapak, not moving to Kampar. She confirmed that even I enroll in May/June intake, I will complete the 4 year program at KL.

with the crappy management?

even in few years time, i doubt that they are qualified enough to offer these kind of courses.

Even some long established universities in overseas also don't offer these courses.
