I graduated from UTAR KL last May. I'm from Chinese school. What I did during my time there was to speak in English with those from sekolah kebangsaan and mandarin with those from Chinese schools.
I'm currently furthering my master studies in UTM, skudai. Before UTAR I was at UKM for 3 years. Even in public uni, Chinese still speaks to each other in Mandarin.
I don't think the language barrier should be a main criteria you take into consideration when you choose where to study.
