That's all i have to say.. If you do not agree on what i've said... feel free to reply my post.. I love to reply to critics about UTAR... coz in this way, i can practise my english and writing skills and i can also defend my university which is a place that i strongly recommend others to come to get their tertiary education..

Cheers~~

wow...a gung-ho UTARian! rclxms.gif
hehe..yes i do have to agree that utar is by far the best around which offers a quality education at a reasonable price. more over, the price can be covered with ptptn loan!

i must say that my first year's lecturers in UTAR FES are not that wonderful but as the semester goes, the lecturers are getting better in terms of everything (preparation, language and knowledge)..so i can say, bear with the year 1 semester 1 and you can see a better lecturers in the coming semester icon_rolleyes.gif

wokay..took some time and ran through the thread. so far...i've read that FYP under dr. alan is not recommended while thumbs up for Dr. Woo...

anymore seniors are able to share more? hehee...am going to select the topics and have to submit them up in 2 weeks time. you know, the LA told us to select something which we are confident to score in..not something out of interest....so maybe i'll scrap cancer related titles by Dr. Ng and take some molecular related ones instead.

haha..why so is 'coz dr. ng's titles scare the heck out of me. due to my lack of knowledge, the titles don't make any sense to me...but whatever it is....i supposed i'll consult him before making any final decisions.

one thing for sure though is that i wouldn't take dr. wong's seaweeds related title...not my cuppa.

so seniors...time to share? LOL...thanks in advance.

and .. calling for akane! hehee...seems like you know a lot about utar eh? so i might as well ask ya...if there was any commemoration ball held before in FES utar?
no right? I have yet to hear of any (maybe i'm wrong)...because i would really love to plan one for the '09 graduates. (have you graduated already?)
any insights?

laugh.gif So this sem many are gona choose Dr Woo? She's very likely to "shoot" you if you dont know the basics or dont take the initiative to search before you ask. Mind me asking what course are you in? We'll be picking FYP titles as well. biggrin.gif
whistling.gif Molecular titles are also in high demand, so i guess really need to be in the lecturer's good books.

hehee...nice to know you...I'm in biotech course. I seriously do not know because I'm actually interested in cancer research and was an intern at institute of medical research during my 2nd sem. i was placed in the molecular department. so...i have some basics in molecular work and..some in their NPC research. only very basics stuff~lah....so....haihz..never mind...i think the first choice will still be molecular work...rite?

at least more safe.....uhmm...rite?

opinions?

sweat.gif i think ur in one of my classes this semester. tongue.gif instrumental methods.

Haha. What you did sounds very familiar. I was attached to the biochemistry dept during my IA, doing cancer research as well. laugh.gif doing mostly molecular work and immunology. doh.gif

Did you get the FYP titles today? I am also considering choosing molecular related FYP titles, but i guess the competition will be quite tough. sad.gif

yeap..got it...sighs...already round up the 6 titles...so what's next? have to make an appt with the lecturer?
and yea yea wink.gif am in the IM class too!

So far, I know there is a graduation dinner for final year students every year, organized by UTAR in hotel ballroom. Maybe you can try to organize one in FES, I'm very much willing to participate if anything materialize.

oh...you mean for all the courses?
hahaa..i really had the semangat before this...typing letters and stuff...but now...the fire seems to be going off. maybe will shrink into something smaller...just for the biotech group perhaps..if it's confirmed that nothing is on for the graduates

p/s: I'm in the same batch as Sun Rae, Y3S1 Biochemistry
Darn. Dr Woo = proteomics. I see protein also scare liao. Herm, considering about Dr Kho and Dr Choo (izit). Both have some interesting projects over there. Dr Hii's fermentation project is another interesting thing to do. Tried it before during my training, culturing actinomyces in a 2 L fermenter. Blardy syiok. But when it comes to waste treatment time, its a blardy complex and time wasting process. Lol.
Weee, my guess is correct ! You are from Biotech. Group wat then ?

Cancer stuff, I guess you can ask more about it from the Cancer research team. There are some projects that are yet to be announced, it could be related to that. But so far, most are related to epidemology studies only a few are wet lab work. Haha. I'm planning to choose molecular work also. But abit worried about the competition.

sounds pretty interesting training you had there!
so you've chose your 6 titles?
btw...i'm in group 2 wink.gif

haha...just too bad I don't have any chance to be the mentioned lecturers' students. I wonder if they will be teaching me in the 2nd sem (forgotten what subjects I will be having in 2nd sem..LOL...all I remember is fermentation...and btw dr. hii is really friendly wink.gif )

so far I've went to consult several lecturers who are not in my considerations but it's good to know what their projects are all about. tmrw, i'll be consulting those whose titles are of my interest. i hope they are all available at the time when I go!

oh..yea! I know see yee and cheng zhu they all..LOL..wah...seems like they famous wey?

btw..i too agree with "die die also want wet lab" statement. I die hard want wet lab...hahaa..if not, why wanna be in the course? seriously, doing stats although bearable but in the long run, if I'm asked to do stats every single day (makan stats, tidur stats, hidup stats style), I will really 'die hard'...hahahaa....i'm just not a maths person.

and i don't think i'll want to do anything which requires me to collect my own sample. first off, to me it's pretty risky (though it is so even with molecular work...at times, much more risky)...and second...haha...(referring to dr. sit's title)...collect plants! I seriously don't know which is which....i mean....ah...they seemingly look the same to me (now).

and of course...due to many many reasons, I wouldn't pick dr. wong ching lee's title. (although she is a nice lady..no pun intended)

I'd love to consult dr. chew as well but i think i'll set his as the 3rd-4th choice. I don't know why but I'm pretty interested in Dr. Lim's titles. Those are regarding cancer cells too (testing against raji cell lines). Guess i'm just interested in anything that has to do with cancer cells.

I went around and joined friends to consult lecturers for fun too..haha..and I found that I wouldn't go for dr. teh's titles. She's a nice lady and is Very flexible with her titles (definitely Not result oriented kind of person) but that was made me think twice.

She didn't set any target in particular and she said that if you are hardworking, she doesn't mind you conducting extra tests and expts (if she approved of it of course). thus, you really have to know what you want when carrying out expts for her titles.
haha..nt my cuppa...i'm too inexperienced to take things that far.

But my friends are pretty interested as they can get bioluminescence bacteria in their hometown.

And yes...dr. soon IS friendly! my friend sent her an email inquiring her on her titles and boy, she replied in such a friendly manner that you'd thought you guys have known each others for a couple of years!

Another selection of mine would be dr. adeline's. I always like her as a lecturer (which I think would be a pleasure to be her friend because my friend who's hers and her hubby's personal friend, said they are a pair of good-humoured couple).
i think there are quite a number of biotechs going for her titles due to:
1. we pretty much like her. she's very approachable and will be available during the 3 months for us to discuss FYP stuff with her.
2. her titles are not too bad. we were taught the skills which we needed.

btw...dr. Khoo...is he that one lecturer who jumped from monash uni's boat to utar? if he's the one, my friends told me that he's really good! i'm not sure what subjects he teaches but i think it's chemistry-related..

ahhh...okay..my mind is pretty set. I think it's either dr. lim or dr. chew....will be seeing them on monday!

wow! seriously many are interested in dr. wong ching lee's titles? how so?

p/s dr anthony is good with story telling...a pretty good lecturer i must say but haha..since i'm having phytochemistry this semester and well...i'm not too confidence theoretically...so...i'll just avoid that title...LOL

I also met dr. soon...(shld correct myself...haha...i typed he instead of she...'coz didn't know until today.. *_*) ...her isolation of dengue antigen is mostly on ELISA and SDS-page.

she is SO approachable and friendly and i was supposed to go for lecture but me and my friend just sat there and talked with her..haha

and dr. chew...gosh..i was intimidated. she came out and asked, what you want?
er...FYP inquiries, ma'am
it's all listed in under the scopes. the title is only told when you are selected.

uhm...well...i was never taught by her...but i supposed i must really know my stuff if i wanted to go under her.

and...yea...it is supposed to be dr. khoo. anyways...i myself have only heard of dr. gideon khoo. haha...

sighs...now i've written down my choices...fingers crossed that I'm going to get chosen.

it was another UTAR-electricity-cut-off DAY again.....ahahaha...class was cancelled and so I followed along my coursemates to meet the lecturers.

today i have met:

Dr. Chew (again): jenzl, i think dr.chew is fed up with answering us so many times so she reacted like that to u...actually she is good. or maybe bcoz she taught us b4. she will be leaving to kampar mid-dec so her fyp will surely be finished within 2 mths...it will be fast. All our senior has done her exp, 2 batches of them and the protocols are all prepared. No worries!!!! rclxms.gif

Dr. Sit: His exp is easy to conduct, cheap material ( your choice of plant). no equipment involve, bacteria culture, and he said student with moderate speed can finish the exp in a month's time....yea! sounds great rite? rclxms.gif

Dr.Woo: for her exp, u gotta come out with your methods, she is not providing that to you. gotta read up from journals. to those who dun have initiative to search for info and independent enuff, prepare to die la...hehe brows.gif

my 1st choice is still DR.anthony.....i hope i get his project!!!!!!!!!!!! tongue.gif

good luck to all of u too^^

yea..i heard some students were trapped in the lift today. why don't they have a emergency supply?

LOL...i guess you are right aki....sometimes lecturers do get tired when students approach them again and again...hehe...anyways..she told me she was busy...having a class in 15 mins time.

regarding dr. sit...haha..to me it's pretty difficult because he wants a unique plant which is not widely researched on. but im sure he'll have a back-up plant in case the students are facing difficulties tongue.gif

Look forward the new FES in Kampar. It would cost UTAR a lot according to my friend. Imagine how high tech the faculty would be.
*
yes..high tech is the word..LOL...anyways, I think i remember carlson told us that they are moving the equipment from our setapak campus, lil' by lil' already -- to the new campus in kampar.

oh btw...congrats to those who have got their desired fyp supervisor. hehe..just to share...i've got mine too -- dr. soon! damn, she's one good one!
(and just to add, yes, dr. anthony is a great lecturer...i enjoy studying phytochem under him as he doesn't teach from the slides. He made stories and is really interesting ... of course, there are some time when he's not...but generally he's a good lecturer!

as for dr. ramani...ah....i never fancy her teaching style. hehee...)

why is it easier to register for jan intake as compared to may?

clinicalbiochem08: well, biotech is not too bad..i mean..every course and subjects have their pro and cons. so i always say that it all boil down to a person's interest in the course which he/she will be choosing.

a 3rd year in biotech, i can say that, biotech is pretty fun in all terms and i do the get satisfaction in studying esp when the lecturers who conducted the classes are all so wonderful (though i had my fair share of struggles and till the next May comes, I am still struggling)

btw...gambateh!!! 2 weeks of final revision rush! high on adrenaline now?
