hehee...nice to know you...I'm in biotech course. I seriously do not know because I'm actually interested in cancer research and was an intern at institute of medical research during my 2nd sem. i was placed in the molecular department. so...i have some basics in molecular work and..some in their NPC research. only very basics stuff~lah....so....haihz..never mind...i think the first choice will still be molecular work...rite?

at least more safe.....uhmm...rite?

opinions?
*
sweat.gif i think ur in one of my classes this semester. tongue.gif instrumental methods.

Haha. What you did sounds very familiar. I was attached to the biochemistry dept during my IA, doing cancer research as well. laugh.gif doing mostly molecular work and immunology. doh.gif

Did you get the FYP titles today? I am also considering choosing molecular related FYP titles, but i guess the competition will be quite tough. sad.gif

yeap..got it...sighs...already round up the 6 titles...so what's next? have to make an appt with the lecturer?
and yea yea wink.gif am in the IM class too!

Added on July 21, 2008, 6:00 pm
oh...you mean for all the courses?
hahaa..i really had the semangat before this...typing letters and stuff...but now...the fire seems to be going off. maybe will shrink into something smaller...just for the biotech group perhaps..if it's confirmed that nothing is on for the graduates
sounds pretty interesting training you had there!
so you've chose your 6 titles?
btw...i'm in group 2 wink.gif
*
laugh.gif thats fast. i havent even found the top6 titles i am interested in. doh.gif Not many places for molecular stuff this sem. Expecting a tough fight if i decide to apply for that.

Yup, make appointment, talk bout the project i guess. Hopefully the lecturers are free. biggrin.gif

Dr.Kim is very strict.
I think she is quite demanding in students' work.
Many students are pressured being taught by her....
but she is good.
dun forget....
she is strict...

i can't find any interesting topics to do for my fyp..........
sigh*
all seems so difficult.......
but i die die also want to choose wet lab
*
laugh.gif i agree. doing dry lab kindof takes the fun out of doing a project. biggrin.gif

are you from biotech or biomed? dr kim doesnt seem to be that strict, in class la. FYP i duno. smile.gif

I"m from biomed.
but but dr.kim is quite scarry at times.........
she is erm........no easy to get along with.......
and she will definitely won't spoon feed her students....
*
Haha. I dont want to find those lecturers which are too easy. Spoon feeding means nothing much will be learnt anyway.

But you are scaring us. laugh.gif will need to reconsider.

thanks akane.
your comments r much appreciate...i shall talk with my seniors.

actually i dun really like anything that has got to do with PCR, protein purification, chromatographic and stuffs lor...but many exp involves PCR...can't avoid from it...majority of my coursemates also dun like PCR bcoz of the lecturer and the teaching assistant who taught us last time was errr......( i guess u should know who i meant..heheh)

the thing is, i plan to study master's in future so i think that i will be able to learn more by doing wet lab and PCR is the so-called basic method one must know, as well as gel electrophoresis etc right? *sigh*

no offense akane but I dislike anything which has to do with plants.....
i prefer bacteria or animal related stuff...
i guess we have diff affection...
*
Yeah, if you plan to take masters or work in a lab in the future, PCR and gel electrophoresis is the basics, especially for biochem students, biotech im not so sure. However, doing PCR and electrophoresis is simple, but getting correct results is the hard part, especially when you're not sure whether the lab is clean.

Haha. I prefer animal cells such as cancer cells more than plants. But no harm doing plants tongue.gif

The title by Dr Chew is quite interesting, but i guess i wont be taking it as there's limited places and of course, he doesnt know me. laugh.gif

what abt biomed students? is PCR and gel electrophoresis needed? hmmm.... blink.gif
sweat.gif DR. chew is a SHE.....it's alrite if she doens't know u. last time she took abt 12 biotech students for their fyp.
I liked her alot....her lecturer's is great and she is very friendly. ^^

Dr.anthony in the other hand is a very cheeky lecturer.....his has a great sense of humour! Even the world's most boring subject will become interesting after being taught by him...like wat i had last sem-neurobiology.
hey, actually i wanted to accompany my fren to see dr.wong today but she wasn't around......
are u choosing her as your 1st choice?
new projects means they might be interesting new findings....the exp will be unpredictable....go ahead for it!! flex.gif

ok...just to share with you all...i've surveyed my biomed coursemates....majority of them are doing microbio works.....less ppl are interested in doing molecular work....and i think the rest of them will choose to do dry lab...
*
hmm.gif not really sure for biomed. but i guess it will be important if you plan to do lab work in the future.

biggrin.gif sorry sorry. i meant to type he/she. doh.gif
Is she a biomed lecturer? Kindof worried coz her places are very limited.

Among my friends, not many are going to aim for microbio, so i guess there wont be alot of competition, unless biotech has many doing it. biggrin.gif

Workscope include culture of luminescnce bacteria (streak plate), isolation of single colony (luminescent broth), DNA extraction (many methods can be used), Gel electrophoresis (1 after DNA extraction and another after PCR), Polymerase chain reaction, Bacterial antibiotic resistance test, sequencing (i didn't manage to do this, not enough time for me hehe) etc....
*
Means you're in your final sem now, since u already did the project?

Mind sharing if you've faced any problems of contamination, or repeating ur project many times? biggrin.gif

it was another UTAR-electricity-cut-off DAY again.....ahahaha...class was cancelled and so I followed along my coursemates to meet the lecturers.

today i have met:

Dr. Chew (again): jenzl, i think dr.chew is fed up with answering us so many times so she reacted like that to u...actually she is good. or maybe bcoz she taught us b4. she will be leaving to kampar mid-dec so her fyp will surely be finished within 2 mths...it will be fast. All our senior has done her exp, 2 batches of them and the protocols are all prepared. No worries!!!! rclxms.gif

Dr. Sit: His exp is easy to conduct, cheap material ( your choice of plant). no equipment involve, bacteria culture, and he said student with moderate speed can finish the exp in a month's time....yea! sounds great rite? rclxms.gif

Dr.Woo: for her exp, u gotta come out with your methods, she is not providing that to you. gotta read up from journals. to those who dun have initiative to search for info and independent enuff, prepare to die la...hehe brows.gif

my 1st choice is still DR.anthony.....i hope i get his project!!!!!!!!!!!! tongue.gif

good luck to all of u too^^
*
laugh.gif did u go see dr woo bout 11am today? tongue.gif

coincidentially she said the same thing when we were talking to her just now.

sweat.gif i've only met one lecturer so far. well, catching up tomorrow. biggrin.gif

Dr. Woo is never my choice. I have enough of protein during 2 years in Biochemistry. And I have no interest at all in protein purification. Lol.

true!!!!
with the way how dr.woo teaches.....
it's hard to find students who likes protein purification..........
*
sweat.gif dr woo's title this sem doesnt seem to be very much related to enzyme. one is fully ELISA and nothing else, the other is FTIR, GC.

went to ask her bout the title she is sharing with dr tang. quite applicable to the industry, but dont know can achieve or not. laugh.gif

But, to memorize the thing u learned in degree.. kinda.. ahahha.. Damn alot of people can't speak properly.. even if lecturers  tongue.gif  Btw, mostly those top scorers sit at the front row alone, and they are very timid.. hahaha.. i stereotyped  biggrin.gif between.. do you guys read from books or just depend solely on the notes given by lecturers? hmm.gif

Btw, i donno how 2 speak mandarin too.. But it doesnt mean that my english is good. Haha, i tried to join chinese school at my place for form 1, but got rejected, because they don't accept student who don't know mandarin.. >_>
*
laugh.gif cant help but stereotype in this. from what i observe, most of those "top scorers" who sit in the front row come from biomedic. tongue.gif
no offence though. just what i observe. sweat.gif whereas biochemistry will only sit in front when the lecturer is giving hints for midterms and such. laugh.gif

QUOTE(aki_067 @ Aug 10 2008, 06:10 PM)
I have experienced with lecturers who are damn poor with his/her english.....seriously, It was a hard time for me!!!!!!! ask them one question they will answer you another thing...=.=''' doh.gif

actually I think that students should read from books other than lecture notes but how many of us here really do that?

Well, for my case, from Week 1 to Week7, I would be hardworking enough to read from reference books and make my own notes but after that when midterms and assignment datelines pile up in front of me...finishing the lecture notes has became a great burden to me.....ahaha....so during exam period....stick to lecture notes and u will still do great!!! thumbup.gif
*
haha. there's some lecturers who are very sought after, but cant speak in english well. doh.gif there was one lecturer who studied in taiwan for many years, if you can ask her in mandarin, she's very pro, but if you ask in english, chances are it will take a longer time for her to answer. biggrin.gif

Ahh.. i've experienced one of the worst.. she's the part time lecturer from GMI, not sure tho.. her england very powderful.. lol she teaches us structural biochemistry y1s1.. Haiz.. at first is Dr Chew taught us, dunno why change during week 7.. Some more people say structural biochem is killer subject  doh.gif
*
ur from biomed rite? sweat.gif if u are, structural biochem isnt a killer subject, but probly one of the easiest. whistling.gif

I need help in clarifying something thou,

I got hold of my application form for utar yesterday from my godsis.

I was planning to apply for Pyschology in Kampar but in the application form,it lets you apply for more courses example like first choice,2nd choice and so on.But the problem is I wanted pyschology only. Can I just put the course as the first choice and leave the others blank? And is there any possibilities that utar can send me to other campus?
*
they will give you the first choice if your results are above the average requirements for that course. dont worry bout leaving the others blank though. i filled in only three choice and they gave me my first. smile.gif

QUOTE(Pmc @ Aug 11 2008, 05:22 PM)
for year 1 sem 1? lol.. i dont mean whole biomedic course
i think if your result is good, they will straight away give u ur 1st choice 1.. so i think better put..
*
laugh.gif sorry sorry. different arrangement of subjects, our structural biochem isnt in y1s1. tongue.gif

No, I want to study Chem Eng. instead of Biotechnology. Yeah I'm a STPM student. The application form guideline says this

STPM Student Entry Requirements BSc. Chem. Eng.

Minimum 2 principal passes including one Science subject or Maths

A-Levels

Minimum 2 principal passes including one Science subject and Maths

The AND / OR is alot of difference. I didn't fully pass my maths.  cry.gif
*
sweat.gif how bout ur other subjects? those are just the MINIMUM entry requirements, but they might accept you if the other subject's results are okay.

if they're just so-so, there's a chance they wont accept you. smile.gif

Utar is cool.. u know why

because when you go out working.

the boss will ask u graduate from where.

And if u say taylors or sunway or what ever la they will just say "Oh is see"

but if u graduate UTAR they will say " Oh Utar Issit the one in PJ or in setapak or blah blah" and they will ask alot about Utar

Why because Utar is interesting unlike other Collages which is always associated with one word "expensive"
And Dr Ramani.... hhehhehe that guys is funny. he and his flowers.
*
haha. ur quite right. havent tried it with bosses, but most relatives/parents friends are like that. they will ask issit the one in KL/Kampar/xx tongue.gif

diff dr ramani i guess. we were taught by a female dr ramani

QUOTE(kanzakicyn @ Oct 29 2008, 05:58 PM)
one subject few lecturers.

Then what about the wed after 2pm's rule of no classes? club and society how?

im a chairman of a club, so... i am just curious lol
*
oh..quite common for bioscience courses. biggrin.gif supposedly coz they have different areas of expertise, so they will teach the individual topics that they are pro in.

Juz to let those that wanna choose to enter UTAR or those currently in utar and will be graduating know that there is such thing that the university is trying to hide such from the students. The other universities always hv alternative document to solve problem, but UTAR will not do anything unless there is LOTS of people compliant.
*
hmm.gif im sure utar has an alternative to that, since some of the utar grads i know managed to start work overseas a few weeks after their final exams. smile.gif

I'm a UTAR graduate, juz took my final paper on september. no official document yet. quarell with all UTAR department a few time already. it alsmost cost me my job in singapore. luckly i hv my diploma with me.

u can try asking the office, normally the answer will be - ask the exam division, then exam division will tell u to ask ur faculty office, then in the end both juz simply tell u something, without letting u know the vry important notice of awarding degree and confirmation of graduation by senat.

Added on November 3, 2008, 12:09 am

they will issue an alternative letter other than those saying senat sign and u are awarded with ur degree, normally this letter take ages, and for transcript worst, office say u'll get it 2month after convo. utar juz cant giv a letter saying u completed study or u hv pass all result waiting for convo

Added on November 3, 2008, 12:11 am

i'm sure they hv, but did they use their degree qualification to apply....

could u pls help me ask them wat letter or document they used for applying working permits or visa? or how they get the documents? i really wanna know, hv a bunch of ex course mate trying to get job overseas.

Added on November 3, 2008, 12:38 amguys, i hv been through all this, even applying for exemption cost me 2 month running around UTAR and KTAR, settle it after i quarell with the head of department from exam division, if not mistaken her name is Lim.
*
im 100% sure that the graduates i met only graduated with degree and do not have diploma. they are able to start work in november right after their final exams in sept/oct, specifically in SG. i'll try to contact them to ask how did they do it. smile.gif but i'll guess that utar provided them with a letter stating that they will be finishing their final exams and expected to grad on a certain date.
