What is Pwnage?

QUOTE
Pwnage is based on an exploit found in the lower levels of the iPhone/iTouch bootloader. We can now "pwn" Apple by patching the device to allow unsigned code. This opens the door to unlimited possibilities.

Once your iPhone/iTouch has been "pwned", you can do things like installing custom made .ipsw files - straight from iTunes!

For a more technical explanation please visit Pwnage page.

iPwner and IPSW Builder

QUOTE
We are going to release two tools as part of Pwnage project:

-iPwner - tool to make your iPhone/iTouch "pwned". (You will have to use this tool just once).

-IPSW Builder - by using this tool you will be able to modify the .ipsw filesystem, i.e. pre-jailbreak, pre-unlock, pre-activate, and create a complete custom .ipsw installation. In case you are already unlocked you can even tell it to disable the baseband update, just in case. Restore or Update from iTunes with custom .ipsw file and Voila! no more hassles after that.

Both tools are undergoing intensive developing and soon will be ready for public consumption.

It's been delayed to next week so they can iron out some issues and add support for windows.

Great Job Dev Teams.

Apparently, this will make the iPhone totally customizable, without any restrictions. Hope they didn't open Pandora's box there. Would hate to see iPhone viruses in the future...

Pick between this one, and the two identical threads discussing the same thing. Mods, your call. I prefer we stick to this, and nuke mine, but that's just me.

the IPSW file is the firmware package downloaded from Apple.

ok, in short, the processes are,
1. pwn the phone
2. modify the firmware using IPSW Builder

ok, pwning is,

so the 'pwning' process enables us to use modified firmware to be installed on the iPhone.

using IPSW Builder, u can pre-jailbreak, pre-unlock, and pre-activate, on the stock firmware. so when u restore using the firmware on iTunes, u don't have to perform unlock anymore.
