Hai Gaiz!

This is my lapping job done on my QX6700. Just wanna share my experience and perhaps u can share urs too!

Materials:
1) 3 types sandpaper (from ACE hardware :thumbs) = 180grit, 600grit and 1000grit (funny numbers cause thats all they had)
2) 1 roll masking tape (to steady the sandpapers)
3) 1 piece 1/2" x 1.5ftx1.5ft thick glass (curi from tv table stand )
4) 1 bottle (?ml) of cleaning alcohol (cap cinabrand)
5) tissue (no q-tips)
6) the processor backcover plastic to protect the LGA pkg

Methods:
- At first, lap 1 way for 30 cycles in a direction with 2 hands, then rotate 90 degrees
- After 20mins gave up, started just estimating how many cycles
- After 30mins fedup, just use one hand and lebih kurang can d

Main aim is to get the nickel off, and even enuf to see full copper

My pics not timely taken, was too excited so straight away jump into the lapping! Forgot to take pics properly


Starting hardware layout:



Start with 180grit
After 15mins lapping! phew... wat shape u all get? mine is like this...funny-distorted-uneven IHS!!!




And after like 30mins lapping




OK! nice and shiny after like 1 BLADY HOUR!!!!





Change grit...spent about 5mins on each, fedup d...no need shiny but i kiasu

Final outcome!

a bit funny, the thermalright copper base was too easy to lap. It left huge chunks of copper dust after each grind (same method as the IHS). like 'rapuh' only
i think only took me 15mins to get sort of shiny...then i fedup again. hehe.

The cooler:




After like 5 mins lapping, the nickle quickly disappeared...if u see close enuf, got some uneven dark spots on the top and bottom



I think after like 10mins, calar like hell d.





After satisfied, changed grit for 5 min each, and got a sorta shiny face ....








Okay mount back on the mobo! Apply thermalpaste later...aih lazy go makan 1st.

Nice copper. How much temp reduction u get after lapping?

yeah...thats what i want to know.can it rdcuce d temp more?

usually it will reduce around 2-3c..but sometimes even 5-6c..

elo....demotivated d after seeing some results. lolz.


after lapping (using prime for load & measuring coretemp 0.97) here are my temps:

Load = 6-7C difference
Idle = 1-2C difference

im starting to worry bout oxidization though.

dun tell me must clean every few weeks...damn leceh la.


forgot, i OC my proc to 3.16Ghz.

heres my core temp for idle...din capture load:

dun remind me how hot it is. i think something wrong with my thermal diode/sensor. at full load its about 73/72/70/70...






its an ES sample btw...

sorry to say but not good enough....u should get at least 1500grit to finish it off for a better mirror shine...

which ace hardware u went to? i got my 1500 and even 2000 grit in ace hardware mid valley. but that was quite sometime ago la

yeah.. have to agree with madman...

this guy here lap until his proc look like a mirror...

i think TS too hurry n excited n the grit used to start the lapping is too coarse n make alot of calar IMO

you need to use 2000 grit for polished finish, and u dont need to get to Ace hardware for this, coz they overprice their sandies.. you can get from hardware shops.. outside. for rm2.50 for 2000grit emery paper is also not bad

When I lap my heatsink and CPU some years ago, I used to finish them by using Brasso or Autosol. I can run stock cooling by overclocking Pentium 4 2GHz Northwood at 3GHz at 1.725V. I still remember that it heats up my room by about 3C. Ah, those are the days....

very nice speeds for a northie.. old schooler yeah i miss those days man, now .... simply sand the proc with all the scratches.. TS, use 2000 to polish it and learn from the experts here on how to polish, theres a technique to polish...

im sorry, but there have been so many threads posting the same things over and over again

guys..lapping with 2000grit has no further use .. u can stop at 1500.. 2000 is just for the mirror shine that is useless... wat u want is flatness.. not shinyness.. don't polish with braso or autosol..it leaves a layer of oil....

doesnt shinyness mean that the surface is actually smooth enough to reflect? Isnt mirror shine wat u want when it comes to cooling> Only if the surface is perfectly smooth then it "mirrors" an image?

i got no cover to cover the back of my proc anyone can guide me use what to replace it?

previously i lapped my freezer 7 pro and my e2140..400,800,1000,1600,...the results not bad lo..ahaha..temp kurang abit lo

shinyness not meaning that the surface was pure flat, try to look into mirror,
you will see that even it looks flat, but not really 'flat'

guess the shinyness shows that it has a better and smooth surface to b exposed...yea..it doesnt mean flat..flat only comes when u hav a really flat thg to lap wif...but i still find abit flaws though it is lapped...it is very difficult to get a pure flat surface

Guys....can some 1 explain to me what is "grit" ....

grit means how coarse is a sand paper. more coarse meaning more rough the surface is and the value of grit is lower.

eg. 200grit > 1000grit. 200 grit is more coarse.
