Unfortunately, in the game today, whether intentional or not, players are on the receiving end of bad tackles and wayward physical contact. I'd like to believe that there are minimal malicious intent in at least the greater amount of games thats being played today. Instead of focussing on the perpetrators, I think its good if we could reflect on the injuries sustained by some of these great players and also feel for them in their trying times.

Sounds like i'm mourning right? The reason I thought I could start this thread was because I watched the Bilbao Vs Getafe replay abit ago, and Yeste (Bilbao) had a head on collission with Getafe's keeper, and the beauty was he immediately got up, but it was evident that something had gone wrong, and the panic could be seen in the eyes of ALL the players on the field.

I not only feel for them, but also am inspired by their courageous comebacks, and it doesnt matter which flag and banner ur from, get in touch with that human side of yours and provide your insight on some of the worst tackles you've seen and how you felt for the INJURED at that point of time.

Kindly RESTRAIN from bashing the tackler or perpetrator or leg-cruncher as this thread is for you to feel for the ones on the crutches/bandages.
Ex. "Taylor is a friggin murderer" <-- None of this please!!

The worst injuries i've seen (In no specific order)

1) Larsson Vs Lyon
2) Cant remember the guys name, but if im not mistaken, he was on the receiving end of Michael Balls elbow (i think)
3) Yeste Vs Getafe
4) Eduardo Vs Birmingham

Unfortunately I cudnt locate the video on Yeste's injuries, but please feel free to give your input!

- Pedro Mendes got "body contact" by ex-ManCity's player. Can't remember his name.
- Sagna's clearance, unbalance. recently against Chelsea. But that one is he fall himself.
- Terry got kick in the face. By Diaby. That's a near death experience for him if Arsenal Physio Gary Lewin wasn't there.

QUOTE
Battiston arrived just before Schumacher, firing off a shot to the left of Schumacher. Just before the resulting collision, Schumacher jumped and put his hands in the air and to his left, as if trying to stop the ball, even though the ball already had passed him. He also seemed to oddly twist and contort his legs off to the side of him while mid-flight, resulting in his buttocks actually making the first impact with Battiston.[1] Afterwards, Battiston was prone, unmoving on the pitch, with his two front teeth knocked out and damaged vertebrae. He received oxygen on the pitch.[2] Michel Platini later said that he thought that Battiston was dead, because "he had no pulse and looked pale"

QUOTE
The German goalkeeper, Harald Schumacher, raced towards Battiston as the Frenchman took the shot, missing the goal. Schumacher leapt into the air, twisting his body and colliding with Battiston. In the process Schumacher's hip hit the French striker's face. Battiston, clattered, fell to the ground unconscious, with damaged vertebrae and teeth knocked out, later slipping into a coma. Emergency medics had to administer oxygen on the pitch.[1] Michel Platini later said that he thought that Battiston was dead, because "he had no pulse and looked pale".[2]

Do you mean Di Matteo? He played 6 years for Chelsea. But the injury he suffered was really bad that forced him to retire at the age of 31 only.

The Schumacher foul was one of the most horrendous knock i've seen in a long time. It could have killed Batiston, honestly.

Worst thing is, Schumacher was not reprimanded by the ref and he didn't make an effort to apologise to Batiston on the spot and even after the game. Apparently he says he didn't wanna apologise coz there was too many French players there and he didn't wanna make things worst by going near the player.

Ya ya. my bad. Remember that. He's Pierluigi Casiraghi, now Italian Under 21 manager together with another ex-Clesea Zola.

If I remember correctly, it was a very bad tackle but no major injury to the player. And Essien escape the punishment from the referee too. I could be wrong tho.

Apparently he personally apologise to Battiston. He accept the apology but insisted he won't be 40 meter nearer to Schumacher if they happen to see each other. smile.gif

Well you might be right on the apologising after the game. I remember reading somewhere that he didn't bother to apologise on the spot. Even looking at the video you could see Schumacher was cool even after the battered Batiston.

I wonder why Germany's goalie always have a fierce looks. Look at Kahn and Lehman. biggrin.gif Seriously, I am also wonder why he can be so cool after the incident and later on take the goal kick as nothing happened. The same goes to the referee.

Focus on the left leg.
I saw it live on the tivo and can see the white fractured bone sticking out while the medic attended to him.

David Busst's career ending injury has to be the worst. Happened against Man Utd years back. Had to undergo bout 20+ surgeries but still couldn't regain full use of his leg.

The most "shocking" injury - Rivaldo World Cup 2002 Brazil - Turkey.
Clutches the face and fall even though it's clearly shown in the tivo there's nothing.

p/s: no one expect that to happen and no one expect referee to react....thus most shocking..... wink.gif

personally the most shocking injury i've seen is cisse's broken tibia and fibula. damn boon, the picture you added in this thread reminds me how bad it was, i wanted to puke on the spot.wink.gif

i couldn't comment on eduardo's because i have not seen it, and i don't really want to. aside from the few captions shown in the newspaper, i try not to watch it. but from those pictures should really be censored.

i try not to watch playbacks of any of those horrendous injuries because i think it's sickening, makes me wanna give up playing football. especially cisse's, when he wasn't even being tackled. they got tangled up and the leg just snapped, crap. how unlucky can you get?

but i must salute rivaldo's terrible injury, look at the replay you can see what pain he must've felt at that time. i watched that match live too...wink.gif

since everyone's busy posting 'shocking' injuries, i might as well add the robben injury he had playing against liverpool.

you know, the one where reina puts his hand on robben, and robben falls down clutching his necks as though he just got strangled by reina's 'fist of poison', boy that was shocking...wink.gif

The game was between Al-Raed and Hajer, two clubs in Saudi Arabia. The player freaking out is a Hajer player, and he was hit in the side of the head and suffered a seizure. He did not fake, and he was not possessed. He had to be taken to hospital, but he lived and was absolutely fine. In fact, he played the very next game for Hajer.

The player's name is Abdulrahman Al-Shoaibi.

Look at the speed they are running at. And the entire body weight concentrated only on 1 leg.

But still, shockingly, I mean, shockingly to me means unexpected, I would say Riise's shot that broke Smith's leg.

That's shocking because the shot was so hard, it broke his leg.

Riise's rocket hit Smith's leg which caused him to land awkwardly. It was the contact with the ground that caused the break. If a player could actually break another player's leg by simply thumping the ball with all his might, imagine how much damage players who get smacked right in the face would incur.

Apparently it hit his nerves. I've seen a cat once being hit by a car at the head. The cat went turning and turning real fast and run hear and there b4 dies. Real freaky.

Time to call for mythbusters. I don't think that the ball and human leg contained enough physics to break another human leg. More or so with the newer and more lighter balls to come every year.

It's logic actually. You don't see many goalkeepers hospitalised after getting smacked by the ball.

Exactly. He landed awkwardly and basically sat on his own leg.

If the force of the ball was the reason he got his leg broken, Roberto Carlos would be banned from football as a potential hazard,

If a ball could do that much damage, there wouldn't be a wall defending a free kick. Imagine getting hit in the nuts by a rocket shot.

Yea unlikely the ball can cause a broken leg.

However, lighter balls means more speed. Speed is a greater factor when calculating energy. So technically, a lighter ball can do more damage if it was hit with more speed.

Cristiano Ronaldo could be a most wanted man for murdering people on the field with his free kick antics. WHAM right into the wall.

I FOUND THE REASON WHY I OPENED THIS THREAD !!
This was the injury I was referring to. I still get the creeps when I watch the player still trying to get up and continue, while his teammates are begging him to get off the field. They were terrified. Haihs. I really hope that hes ok, cos i dont know where to get the news.

Not necessarily. Newton's 2nd law Force=(m)mass x (a)acceleration. While lighter and bouncier ball has increase in a but it is compensated by the lack of m, therefore the Force might still be the same. The only way to increase the Force is by using 12kg bowling ball on football matches laugh.gif.

Maybe all future footballers should wear helmets like Cech.

Yes but what really matters in collision is energy not force. In this case kinetic energy which is Energy = 0.5 m v^2 where the speed is squared.

I'd say Eduardo's injury is a relatively straight forward injury to heal. Its a broken bone, something that stunt actors, skate boarders and etc suffer and yet they come back to action after recovering. Its the fact that it looked horrifying to see someone's leg go the other way. Of coz i'm not saying its a small injury but there are alot more injury that literally ends a players career but doesn't look as bad as Eduardo's leg break. Injuries related to muscles and ligaments are player's worst nightmare whereby the rehabilitation will take forever.

Eduardo's chance of playing again is pretty good, just as long as he's mentally prepared to come on the field and not be affected by the sight of the broken leg.

Wasn't the main reason his career ended, though the challenge might have contributed a part in it. It was a problem on the other leg that caused Haaland to quit football. Remember, he played again a few weeks after the tackle.

I'm rather surprised Keane's a calm figure as a manager nowadays. He used to be barking orders and leading by example on the pitch. I'd say he's one of the calmer figure, not so animated compared to Martin Oneill or Rafa Benitez. A far cry from what he was during his playing days.

Might be a composed figure when the camera's are on around him, but I doubt the players will say the same in the dressing room. Doubt he'd shy away from "dressing down" the players and give them a proper hairdryer, a la Ferguson. Don't know about you guys, but having a boss like Keane will make me piss my pants, twice.
