I'm not sure where else to ask, but is there a repair shop that has spare parts for the old Xbox? and is it possible to swap the disk drive with a normal PC dvd drive? sounds insanel but just curious. And i know, why wont i just buy a new 360, but first I really need to get my xbox fix....if theres no hope for it I'll just get the 360 then....; -;

TS, You can do that. Actually you can google it up. http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?...e_modificationsJust find the firmware and you are good to go. Otherwise get hold of Microsoft singapore. I can imagine the cost being high though

No, it's not insane. It's definitely possible to replace the Xbox DVD drive with a PC DVD drive. First, you need a common Molex power splitter for your PC DVD drive. The Xbox uses a different power socket. Once you have the splitter, simply take out the existing power cable from your Xbox hard disk and replace it with the splitter. Then plug one end of the splitter to the hard disk, and the other end to the PC DVD drive. That's it!
A word of notice though. PC DVD drives are not able to read original Xbox discs. Unless your drive is modified with the specific firmware code, it simply won't read them. The drive will only read from backup dics. Of course this also means that you must already have a modded Xbox for the DVD drive swap to work.

First things first. Only specific models of Samsung DVD ROM drives can be flashed with the original Xbox firmware. Any other models or brands simply won't do. I don't think it's possible to buy the particular drive around here. Oh, I tried looking for it alright. In the end, I decided to simply replace it with a normal PC DVD ROM drive. Like I mentioned before, PC DVD ROM drives can read backup games, but not originals. If all you want to run are backups, then it should be fine. I also find that PC DVD drives are far better at reading backups than the original Xbox drive ever could, since most PC DVD ROM drives have a read speed of 16X compared to the Xbox drive which has a read speed of 5X.

Yup. Flashing is done via a computer. You need to find the original Xbox firmware and flash it using a TSOP based flashing software. If it sounds complicated, that's because it's not exactly straightforward. In the end though, I never had the chance to try it, because I couldn't find the exact Samsung drive. Yes, backup simply means "not original". Which is why I mentioned that your Xbox had to be modded for the drive replacement to work.

just upgrade your HDD to a bigger capacity one mine right now is using 250gb, with tonnes of movies and shows in there, XBMC FTW! you also can backup your game to the HDD and load directly from HDD, which is faster But I'm using my old Xbox mainly for watching movies, which X360 still is no match for it. if you're not sure of how to upgrade/repair your xbox, just bring it to Bernard of Gamer's solution, he change my burned mod chip for me on the spot

Uhh, RROD is a very new problem in the world of consoles. And it's very specific to the Xbox 360. What greyshadow meant was that only the modchip burned, not the motherboard or anything. In this case, you can safely replace your modchip with a new one.

I've just bought the old xbox. If i'm not mistaken it can play audio CD, mp3 and movie right? But when i insert the movie or audio CD it can't be played.
Is it because of my mod chip. I'm not sure what kind of mod chip i have but i can see when i reboot my xbox there's a screen show evolution X. Is that the model of my mod chip?
How i can view my data in the hard disk. Do i have to use a PC to connect to the xbox's hdd to view the data?
