Eden plans to spin off division for listing
By IZWAN IDRIS
SHAH ALAM: Eden Enterprises (M) Bhd plans to spin off a division consisting of its food and beverage (F&B), as well as tourism-related operations under a separate listed entity within the group in three years.
"Our target is to grow revenue from this segment to RM100mil a year from RM40mil now," executive chairman Tan Sri Abd Rahim Mohamad said after Eden's AGM yesterday.
To achieve this, the company plans to open new restaurants, locally and abroad, as well as expand by franchising its bakery business.
Eden, which owns and operates Underwater World Langkawi aquaria, is also in talks to acquire Hotel Singgahsana in Petaling Jaya from KUB Malaysia Bhd. However, the group, better known for its dining outlets, generated about 75% of its turnover from selling electricity.
The power generation unit is projected to account for a larger slice of the revenue pie with income from new independent power producer (IPP) projects overseas expected to kick in three years.
"We have already secured power projects in Pakistan and are looking for new opportunities in Laos and Indonesia," Abd Rahim said.
The IPP project in Pakistan, which is expected to start producing electricity by late 2009, would provide a major boost to the group's future earnings.
Abd Rahim said construction work on a 205-megawatt (MW) power plant - under the first phase of the approved 405MW gas-fired IPP in Dadu, Pakistan - was expected to start by early next year.
He said the group was in the final stage of negotiations with the local authorities there to seal a power purchase agreement.
Meanwhile, Eden is finalising a feasibility study and financial close for a 655MW hydroelectric power plant project in Suki Kinari, near Karachi.
It owns the majority stake in the joint ventures that were awarded the projects in Pakistan. The combined value of the IPP projects was estimated at RM4bil.
Eden has also submitted bids for a 330MW power plant in Sabah, as well as a proposal for an undersea electricity cable linking Bakun Dam in Sarawak and the peninsular.
Quite diversified, the acitivities of Eden.. anyone fancy this counter? Saturday June 23, 2007
