BAGAN DATOH, March 2 (Bernama) -- The 24-hour Bernama TV news channel, operated by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), is capable of providing quality content equivalent to those provided by private television stations, Deputy Information Minister Datuk Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

Ahmad Zahid, who was impressed by the news network, said Bernama TV was successful in presenting news in a professional manner, with attractive backdrops and props besides presenting newsworthy stories.

"This goes to show that if a government television channel is given the opportunity, it could provide quality content equivalent to those provided by private stations," he told reporters after launching a community programme in Kampung Sungai Haji Mohamad Saturday. He said the 24-hour, seven days a week news channel would complement the Radio dan Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and not competing with the national broadcasting channel.

Last Thursday, Bernama through its subsidiary, Bernama Berhad in collaboration with Astro, Malaysia's leading multimedia broadcaster, launched the 24/7 news channel.

With the "Right & Now" (Baru & Benar) slogan, the news network content comprises breaking news and business news as well as coverage on lifestyles, sports and entertainment, including music, films, fashion, home and health.

Prior to this, Malaysian audience had to rely on foreign news network such as CNN, BBC, Bloomberg and Al-Jazeera for round-the-clock news broadcast as there was no local channel providing news in the 24-hour format.

Following the launch, the Bernama bulletin on Astro Ria, Prima, AEC and Vaanavil had been merged and transferred to Bernama TV via Channel 502 on Astro.
