Hahaha, no ler ...... I'm actually building up my HD-DVD collection after selling off my original dvds. I'm expecting a shipment of HD-DVDs. At $11.95 to $13.95 each, it's cheaper than buying an original dvd.

ur 1800 much better .....btw ..this 663 is coming soon to A&L according to HTKaki

There's a firmware update for RX-V1800 and RX-V3800 to solve the DTS-MA bitstream popping sound, the firmware was released on 13 March to solve this issue. A couple of titles were affectly, namely, The Fly, Chronos, Fantastic Four, Flyboys, etc on BD and Eagles on HD-DVD. Not sure whether the firmware can be used on our local RX-V1800, I got no confirmation on that yet.

Another issue that bugs me is the RX-V1800 and RX-V3800 will process the HDMI signals and causes clipping issues. It will process a 0-255 Full RGB signal to 16-235 RGB Video signal, the XBOX 360 and PS3 supports Full RGB signals as well as certain Blu-Ray players and all HTPCs as well. I've asked my friend to check with Yamaha whether this can be fixed and what's the impact if it can't be fixed as my Bravia 400A can support Full RGB signals, I've tested yesterday. It's a big concern to me.

The DTS-MA popping sound via bitstream also affects Onkyo's 605, 705, etc as well and they have more serious problems, lip sync problems via HDMI for upconverted video signals. Seems like Denon and Marantz don't have DTS-MA popping issues but Denon has macroblocking issues when upscaling SD sources. Damn ....... veli headache. doh.gif

QUOTE(aiman04 @ Apr 14 2008, 03:36 PM)
I've read about that. It's the DTS chip inside the receiver that's causing the popping sound. Both Yamaha & Onkyo used the same chip. Do you know where to download the firmware? Though actually for PS3 users, should not be worried, because the signal received is PCM already, the only processing within the receiver is only by the DAC.

The lip-sync problem is only well-known for Onkyo only, not Yamaha.

About the clipping effect, in the manual itself it's stated that the receiver doesn't support full RGB, signals from 0-15 will be clipped. I noticed loss of details in dark scenes. But that's why I used YPbCr instead, I never bothered about RGB anyway.

Get the one that suits you most, the one that it's shortcomings is more tolerable to you, and, of course, versus your budget. The popping sound won't affect you if you're using PS3, and even that can be fixed with the firmware update.  thumbup.gif

I guess it's obvious huh, I'm also a Yamaha fanboy. whistling.gif  tongue.gif
*
Yeah but sadly, XBOX 360 can't select between YPbCr and RGB but since XBOX 360 doesn't support lossless audio, the only solution is to plug the HDMI cable directly to the LCD and the audio output via optical. For PS3, the games support Full RGB whereas Full RGB has no effect on Blu-Ray and DVD movies so the clipping issue will affect PS3 games but not on the latter.

Surprising fact, the RX-V663 also suffers from Full RGB clipping issue, earlier they blamed the ABT1010 chip used in RX-V1800 / RX-V3800 but seems like it's not due to the upscaling chip, Yamaha argued that they're following the RGB Video standards so there won't be a RGB fix in future firmwares. Sigh ....... doh.gif By right, they should leave all HDMI signals untouched just like other brands.

As for the latest firmware for RX-V1800, the link is here, http://www.yamahapab.com/assets/products/V1800_05_13r4.zip but I'm not sure whether it will work with our RX-V1800 because nobody can tell whether the file is region protected but anyway, you can give it a try, if it refuses to update, that means the firmware is incorrect.

QUOTE(aiman04 @ Apr 15 2008, 07:09 AM)
Thanks for the link bro!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought all receivers don't actually just "passthrough" the video from HDMI? I've read sometime ago that they use some kind of process called "repeater". The digital signal can't really travel that far from player --> receiver --> TV because of bandwidth degradation (even the HDMI 1.3 can't carry the signal farther than 5 meters). So to avoid the, the receiver will have to repeat the signal and send it again to the TV. This is where the issue is for the Yamaha, it's their repeater, not the Anchor Bay upscaling chip as they can't upscale digital sources (i.e. HDMI).

But hey, the Yamaha receivers support deep color reproduction what? whistling.gif  (A silly attempt  from a fanboy! tongue.gif )

So much to learn in this AV stuff!  biggrin.gif
*
They have a repeater, that's correct but Yamaha shouldn't touch the HDMI signals and changing from 0-255 to 16-235 will result washed out colours if your display is calibrated to support Full RGB. I wonder why they did that for. They should leave it untouched like other brands.

Second problem, Yamaha amps detect DTS-MA 5.1 tracks as DTS-MA7.1 so it is engaged all the time even if it is just a DTS-MA 5.1 source. This can't be solved by firmware yet and Yamaha refused to comment anything on this.

Of course, like what you have mentioned, if PS3 outputs everything via PCM then this is not an issue and some Blu-Ray players can output all lossless tracks via PCM instead of Bitstream, again not an issue so if that's the case, why spend RM3.8K on RX-V1800 when one can simply get a normal amp that accepts PCM 7.1 via HDMI, right?

review plug from AVS :
well, in case anyone is wondering... yes, DTS HD:MA is here.

- The update went rather quickly. No issues so far.

- I am decoding DTS HD:MA on the PS3, then outputting it to my Denon 3808CI. It will not bitstream the higher codec (as expected), and only DTS 1.5Mbps is possible in bitstream. And yes, the PS3 onscreen display reads DTS HD:MA with an audio rate of 2.2 - 3.0 Mbps.

- I am currently viewing "Mr. Brooks" and the sound quality is amazing. The lower bass impact on some of the scenes is outstanding. I assume that a DTS HD:MA like Die Hard 4 would be better as a demo disk, but I have to rent that again. I'll try "Kingdom of Heaven" in a bit, but these are the only DTS MA BD's that I have.

I am so very pleased with this update. How's everyone else doing?

Haha!!! I'm listening to Devil Wears Prada's DTS-HD MA now! tongue.gif

Also tested Shoot 'Em Up and Live Free or Die hard. What I notice, the bass is so much, much, much deeper & the surround channels are more detailed. rclxms.gif

Even the cinemas now rarely plays movie in DTS anymore, you guys noticed that? Mostly just Dolby Digital. I guess that's why I think I've never heard sound this good from a movie before. From now on I will only go to cinemas for special movies only, like Indy 4 and maybe Iron Man. I would rather wait for the others to come out on BDs instead. I'm serious.

And yes, i can confirm that my 2 New Line titles, Shoot 'Em Up and Pan's Labyrinth ,which should be 7.1, is showing 5.1 on my receiver while the PS3 is showing 7.1. I've read this can be easily fixed in the next firmware update. The New Line montage of the both discs, shows correctly as 7.1 though. DTS actually got different setups for their 7.1 system, and in this case PS3 reads the setup of the main feature wrongly.

And oh, the discs loads much faster now, anyone noticed that?
*
You can temporarily use PLIIX on your amp to get 7.1 matrixed. Have you tried playing any movies with PCM 7.1, does your amp read them as 7.1 or 5.1?

Hmm ...... Megatron ...... how about you, DTS-MA 7.1 will show 5.1 or 7.1 with your Denon amp?

Yes, I got 3:10 to Yuma and it's showing 7.1.

You can look around the net, it's the problem with the encoder within PS3. Everyone around the world is having this problem with New Line titles with DTS-HD MA 7.1. No matter what kind of receiver they use.

The New Line montage, which is also DTS-HD MA 7.1, shows correctly on both discs. It's the DTS system setup which PS3 fails to output correctly as 7.1 even though it recognizes it.
*
Seems like there are endless problems here and there. Firstly, Yamaha detects DTS-MA 5.1 signals as DTS-MA 7.1 and now the PS3 is doing the total opposite. doh.gif

Guess I have less problems with a hd-dvd player even though it's a rather basic piece of hardware and it works fine.

Anyway, according to a post in AVS Forum, PCM can add huge amounts of jitter to a signal but Bitstreaming adds very little jitter. What does this do to the sound ? Well experts would claim too much jitter is bad.
