i think cititel is a better place to live imho. there is nearer to most of the famous food area.

hire a taxi driver seems better choice, as even if you had GPS, it might be not up to date, as some road might be change to single lane and stuff

besides, penang is not as easy to drive as you think. motorcycles are here and there, zig zagging, and alot of place is hard to find parking too

so if taxi driver for a permanent rate does not cost that much if you can find one, then by all means go for it

Used to be RM$25/hr, minimum 4 hours. But now seems like the taxi drivers are asking for RM$30/hr.

You can find some contacts if you do a search at the Penang forum at TripAdvisor.

If you have a big group and need a van with driver, you can hire from Ocean Jupiter.

IMHO, better to hire a taxi, no need to get stress over the directions, the many one way streets and lack of parking space, especially in the town centre. I reckon it'd probably costs just a little bit extra if hire a taxi for the day when comparing hire a taxi and self drive (car rental + petrol + parking fee). Also, would be cheaper if you hire the taxi driver by the hour, rather than having to bargain for each individual trip to one location.

Self drive is ok if you are not driving into the town, for eg, if you are doing the round Penang Island trip.

May also consider hopping onto the FREE bus, called "CAT", aroound town area. Or try to take bus - Rapid Penang. If intend to take bus, can check on Rapid Penang's web site and look at the journey planner for route/service no etc.

Depends on how you see it. Cititel is good as a "tourist class" hotel, location wise it's quite convenient. Diagonally opposite is the Red Garden, a food centre, lots of nice hawker stalls.

U can even try sunway hotel, as u walk out so many food stalls (Near New lane) or even budget hotel like Red Rock (refurbished d ) - used to be Ming Court-I guess. Or even Tune Hotel in Penang (not very expensive) Just book thru AA website. Tune Hotel - u have to pay for aircond & bring yr toiletteries & towels or else u can pay for it. Rooms are very clean & new. Sometimes they offer quite cheap.do check it out. Tune hotel locations are quite good as it is near the Sow Tow lane food court (next door only) or u can even walk across the street to Abu Siti lane to eat the famous Char koay teow (Very pricey & u got to wait very long) and also the ice kacang there. And I think there should be buses near the hotel that can take u to Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi & Teluk Bahang (M not very sure but I remember they have it those days)

Batu Ferringhi. The hawker centre is called Long Beach.

Try Tunes Hotel as mentioned, but I think it may be too late as most Hotel especially the reasonable ones will be fully booked for the CNY period.
