In the US maybe lah.
But in Japan, I don't think so... at least not in the near future.
Japanese handphones are 'very very heavily' subsidised
by the respective telcos...Still have to pay a bit lah, but
they are virtually free to the consumers. Japanese ppl are
used to this concept already.
I don't think the regular consumer in japan will accept
the idea of forking lotsa money for an unlocked phone.

Docomo's highly successful iMode. So..... dunno
how they are getting around that lah.
