Slower than a snail, download speed

I'm completely new and interested to join, if it's worth the effort and the money. So I read the first topic and clicked the link to test the speed to download the file. It gave me an average speed of 5 KB/s...??? What is this talking about high speed downloading? Please explain in clear comprehensive words what's the benefit for me.
