I saw a DVI to HDMI cable recently. It makes me wonder....

If my PC is DVI and my HDTV is HDMI port, can I use this cable to connect each other?

Of the other way round? How about the sound?

Anyone have tried this before?

If i play HD movies from my PC and connect using normal serial connection to my HDTV, will there be any loss in PQ?
How about connection to the sound system? using headphone jack?

I am planning to buy a low profile tower casing PC to store all my music and movies. Connect to the HDTV and play it.
It is something like HTPC.

Any advise?

For your info, if you VGA only support DVI output, it doesn't support the sound as available in HDMI. You need to get a VGA which supports HDMI output, most ATI VGA supports that feature, or you may get ASUS 8600GT HDMI 256MB/DDR3 model for budget Nvidia card.

If you are using serial connection to TV to play HD movies from PC, for sure you will suffer some losses in PQ. It's better that you go for a low profile PC just to play music/HD movies in your HDTV, just budget RM1k will do as I already help my customer to set up 2 sets of similar PC smile.gif

Hope this will help and you may PM me if you need any further info smile.gif

You need to set the VGA output resolution to match your TV resolution, else no picture will be displayed sad.gif

7600GT got SPDIF In, but my graphic card only got 1 S-Video & 2 DVI output.
Does DVI to HDMI carries audio if I connect my sound card SPDIF out into graphic card?
Anyone tried before?

DVI cannot carry audio.

DVI could be either DVI-I or DVI-D.

Ya, interested to know whether it works o not. Currently i'm using 9600GT (dual DVI + one SPDIF in/out).

My setup is:
Video = using DVI-VGA converter or DVI-HDMI converter to connect to my LCD (which only have VGA or HDMI possible for PC).
Audio = using normal black & red cable to connect to 2.1 Home Theater.

Now thinking to buy a Home Theater system which has Optical input so that i can connect my sound from sound card to Home theater's optical.

Question: if i buy a graphica card with HDMI (eg: ATI HD2600 Pro), will the HDMI capable to carry sound also? or still must use SPDIF for sound?

Certain Sapphire ATI display cards carry audio via HDMI. You can check the specs on the box. I remembered clearly the HD2600XT model has this feature.

theres DVI port behind my rig so i wonder if i use the dvi to hdmi cable, will it support the higher res? (1920*1080)

it does have 1080p support from HDMI. doesnt seems to support VGA cable in HD tho. wat i concern is does it work if i use the HDMI input by coverting my DVI connection on my pc via conversion cable.

Nope. Your graphics card doesn't have any Audio In Input , hence its not possible. You must understand that this whole concept of joining audio and video together started with 8 Series for Nvidia and 2xxx series for ATI. Older cards don't support it
