This is one of the reason why I dont encourage user to use ReadyBoost.
Because Vista is designed to cache whatever possible stuff into the memory so that it load straight away instead of waiting for it to load which results in excessive hdd caching as well as consuming all the ram that you have. I seen some reported that even adding to 4GB RAM would end up even worse cos it will load even more stuff into the ram.

Readyboost simply doesnt work if you have 2GB ram and above. For anything below, mayb the additional memory does help but for those with 2GB and above, all I notice is the laggard. Even cold boot/restart is slower than usual when using ReadyBoost.

Apparently some still don't know that Vista automatically defrags the hard disk when the PC is idle.
Mac OSX don't have a 'native' defragmenter because it defrags itself, Vista emulates this.
That's why the Vista defrag app is so simple (no graphs like in XP), MS reckon you don't need it anymore since Vista already doing it.

QUOTE
Why did you simplify the Disk Defragmenter interface?
The Windows Vista Disk Defragmenter was simplified primarily for the purpose of removing it out of the face of the user. It runs periodically and keeps your file system fragmentation at acceptable levels, making it unnecessary for you to launch the tool itself. With the new UI, you can see that we really don't want defrag to be something that people have to worry about, just like any number of other low-level capabilities in the OS.
(source: https://blogs.technet.com/filecab/articles/440717.aspx )

The result: hard disk LED looks busy all the time.

Is this a good idea? If you are that grandpa that don't know what a hard disk is, then maybe. But for younger power users, this is like the walking stick that you don't need.

Isn't ready boost is to help caching all those tiny files which always located randomly in our hard disk.

flash disk random seek less than 1ms compare to mechanical hard disk around 8-12 ms.

I am using 2GB Rams, and my 2GB pendrive permanently stuck at the back of my PC usb port as permanent dedicated readyboost device. To be honest, I can't detect any significant improvement but frequent aps load a bit faster.

I believe ready boost is implemented to overcome mechanical hdd slow random seek, not to replace hdd transfer speed (which much faster compare to flash drive)

Threat starter, how long the hdd led keep blinking. I use ori ultimate 32bit, and it happen to me too everytime i fresh boot my pc, until all my 2gigs ram fully cached. Around 1-2 minutes kot...doesn't actually measure it. But you can view it at task manager.

Vista has the "habit" of loading the files only after Windows is started...

for XP, it loads everything before Windows starts (when u see the bar moving across)...

it maybe that when u installed ultimate, all the files are in a nice shape, thus it need not load so long...

Its normal for vista to non-stop loading the hdd。 I having the same thing on vista x64 and x86。 Both are original from MSDN。 I think its indexing service or just as Astria says, after loading files after windows started。

But for me, it loads, but when i move my mouse or doing something, i wont like tat。 Possble tat your machine have not enough ram and using pagefiles a lot?

i'm using vista ultimate 32bit and my hard disk is keep on flashing...
however, that doesn't make anyting go bad...the cpu usage is owez around 0~40%
then the ram is <50%...

so? let it blink...its just defragmenting ur hard disk for better performance(although just a little bit..)

Without your computer specs, we can't really help you. Maybe your HDD is IDE and 5400RPM? icon_rolleyes.gif Therefore the blue light.
