Shots #2, #3, and #4 are HDR images, that's the reason why they have a somewhat different look.

I was using Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro for this one.

Added on February 29, 2008, 12:14 pmI usually merge the source images with different exposures using Photoshop (PS) because it aligns the images better. Then I'll tone-map the 32-bit .HDR image generated by PS using Photomatix. I'll finally fine-tune the image again in PS. Hope this helps.

Added on February 29, 2008, 12:59 pmI don't do the local adaption in photoshop. I simply save the merged file in a 32-bit .HDR file and let PhotoMatix do the tone-mapping. Yeah, PhotoMatix is not free, but can try out the trial version for free. Most of the time, after tone-mapping using PhotoMatix, one needs to do some curving-tuning and masking in PS to get the best out the image. Hope this helps!

I think with some careful adjustment in PS, you should be able to get some acceptable HDR also.

You will get closer with practice. Did you fine-tune the image in Photoshop?

Found an open source software for HDR imaging, it's called Qtpfsgui.
