QUOTE(skindred @ Feb 22 2008, 09:17 PM) Wanna know, from you people who actually OWN or have seen a guitar with an Ebony fretboard yourself.. Is that rosewood or ebony ? Is it normal for Ebony fretboards to have these "marks" on the wood ? Looks like got some holes/imperfection. Bad luthier job ? Or dented by careless sales people who screwed around with it ? Anyway, freboards are levelled and should NOT have those marks I believe, so most likely they're scratches caused by humans. I'm talking about those scratches that aren't angled along the rest. Not the ones that are vertical, those exist in my acoustic also. Your 2nd pic most likely human error. First one i think is normal, unless you're talking about that circular scratch, or hair, which shouldn't be there. 2nd pic, so obvious upper right corner, diagonal hole, not natural. bman : I actually mentioned the word "Ebony" 3 times in this page, including the thread title .. Hehehh
And I was talking about the "darker black dots" marks on the fretboard actually, not the scratches, I should have been more specific But thanks! Anybody else have any comments about the Darker black dot marks? |

jikolo : Do you own, or are familiar with Ebony fretboards? If you DO, can u confirm that those darker black dots/marks on the Ebony fretboard are normal?
Really not trying to be rude, but I really need comments by experienced people who actually own, or are very familiar with Ebony fretboards. Cause this is my first encounter with Ebony fretboard, I had always been a rosewood user before.. Thanks all |

But then skindred, if those dots doesn't hinder your playing and it doesn't affect your tone, then why bother?

tried wiping it off with fretboard cleaner? it could just be the dirt from your hands that accumulates after playing alot. (like those greenish thing underneath your strings if you dont wipe them after every playing session)

arent those the wood oil mark...some woods got oil in them, in certain parts only...
when you sanded or polish woods sometimes the oil will come out.. from my experience working as a carpenter long2 time ago.. This post has been edited by rogerwee: Feb 22 2008, 11:51 PM |

Everdying : You were actually one of the few I know who owns a guitar with Ebony fretboard that I hope would reply here. Thanks.
Damn it, do u have any idea how come my 'Ebony' fretboard has those marks? How many other differences are there in my pictures compared to your guitars with Ebony fretboards? There are another two person who commented and said my fretboard is most probably Dyed rosewood, not real Ebony. If its true, it really sucks.. |

PM-ed you everdying.. thanks..
Added on February 23, 2008, 1:49 amrogerwee : Hmm.. So i suppose the "oil marks" should be just aesthetics problem only right..? Won't affect the wood surface/quality in the long run or anything? This post has been edited by skindred: Feb 23 2008, 01:49 AM |

errr... does the mark runs along the whole fret board or only on a certain part of it?
my acoustic has ebony fretboard. but like everdying said it doesn't look as dark as a gibson's since it's lower grade.. though it did say it's hand made... in taiwan that is :-P but no... mine doesn't have those marks... maybe when your guitar was made some of the finishing accidently got sprayed onto the board... hence the marks... |
